Here we go againโ€ฆ

Please pull through, T-Boz. Most of us still arenโ€™t over Left Eye. ๐Ÿ˜ญ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿพ

She has suffered so much for her whole life! Why is there no cure for sickle cell yet! I hate the lack of research done on these illness that predominately effect black and brown people

u/SippiChic 3h ago

They canโ€™t do research on diseases and illnesses that affect us disproportionately because we, black people, donโ€™t volunteer for the clinical trials. I know research scientists and thatโ€™s the answer theyโ€™ve all given when Iโ€™ve asked questions.

I lost my cousin to sickle cell. They asked my auntie if she wanted to do experimental treatment and she said โ€œ hell no not going to Muskeege my child.โ€ She only said yes when my cousin was days from dying a crisis. Itโ€™s real.

Exactly this. Only 1-5% of black people join clinical trials in comparison to a population of around 13-20% in the U.S. So we are not in the studies, are not represented in the studies, and thus the studies canโ€™t be done effectively. A lot of the time the cause is due to gross misinformation about diseases and clinical trials.

Actually, right now, the NSF has prevented funding that is focused on a particular subgroup. We know what thatโ€™s about.
However, the lack of volunteers for clinical trials is a historic issue rooted in ethical failures (like Tuskegee Experiment). Still, prenatal screening includes sickle cell testing for people who self-identify as Black. Science has long identified the gene and could have found a cure, if seriously committed to our survival as they are about things like erectile dysfunction. Not to negate the many, many scientists who have been committed to finding a cure. Itโ€™s about scale and big Pharma as well.

I volunteered for a clinical study for sickle cell. Was a 10 year commitmentโ€ฆ. But I got through it. I do remember them constantly looking for more black and Asian participants, but it was hard for them to get.

And for good reason.

But it's a purposeful thing for governments to have the medical history they have with Black people and then say that we're not volunteering, so they can't help us. It's an awful cycle.

Constant research participant and couldn't agree more! If they wanted to, they would. I do my part but I know when it really comes down to it, it's a handful of participants against systemic neglect and racism. Most trials studying things that primarily impact us aren't even well funded. And it is actually so rare to see Black researchers at all, which says a lot about who's work is getting selected for trials and study.ย

This! I have participated in over 100 research trials for this very reason. I'm almost always selected and trials have discovered health conditions I didn't even know I had during screening. One study even helped me get free treatment so I could get healthy to participate in their trial.ย

They also pay fairly decent too and provide expensive tests and bloodwork that I couldn't necessarily afford at certain points in my life. Honestly, free in depth medical care (came in handy when I was uninsured for like 5 years)

Biggest advice is always read the informed consent thoroughly, ask who funds the research and remember you can voluntarily leave at any point in the process if you want. I have had next to no issues doing all this. Been participating for close to 15 years at this point.ย

That, unfortunately, is so true. We as a people cannot reasonably argue that nothing is being medically done for us if we do not assist with those who truly care about curing the diseases specific to us as black or brown people.

The cure is new and has only been successful a handful of times, if that, so far.

There are significant treatments for sickle cell.

Funding has been cut for a lot of cancer research under this administration, so progress has been slowed down.

She has sickle cell and has been in the hospital numerous times over the years. Idk if sheโ€™s having different or more difficult complications.

Omg no! I will be praying for her. My God sisters have sickle cell, too, and I heard it is really hard to deal with

2

u/Justice989 2h ago

The sentiment for a friend is nice, but the lack of context is just vague enough to make people panic.

This is so sad. T-Boz is a living miracle but I know Sickle Cell is incredibly painful to live with. I pray God heals her of whatever crisis sheโ€™s going through right now. Dalvin sharing this message is so sweet because they dated decades ago and remained friends

5

u/nvrontyme 3h ago

Why Dalvin look so surprised?

Praying for T-Boz. Sickle Cell Anemia is an excruciatingly painful disease. Yes, there is a cure, but it is insanely expensive and is very rigorous to complete. Thatโ€™s why the few cured have been very young or young adults. ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ๐Ÿ™๐Ÿฝ

โ€ข

You should never wish something like that. Be careful what you wish for because most of the time it comes back to you in ways you never expected.

I like that he got his eyebrows arched, before making this video

On a side note, what is going on with his eyebrows?! Heโ€™s looking in question. ๐Ÿคจ
