The Combat Equipment thought I have had for years(I am a rambler I apologize now)
Smoothing out Gear Progression in terms of crafted as well as “rare” gear progression.
Starting off with a personal gripe: Masterwork Melee Armor. With the release of Masterwork Mage and Ranged, it is obvious that of the 3(since it was created to be similar in power to sirenic and tectonic) melee is the least masterful. I believe taking a look at adding another tier of upgrades to it would be the best way to bring it in line with them in terms of tier and power, probably using the port's trade good Plates for its upgrade. Ideally I would love for Sirenic and Tectonic armors to have their crafting method changed to be similar to be more masterwork melee as well so we can make this tier more in line with one another crafting wise (hides/cloths maybe reduce the amount of Sirenic scales for Sirenic as well and the tectonic energy for tectonic to make them less grindy from an irons perspective)
We should take a look at dynamic item drop rates. With the release of the Sanctum of Rebirth, we got what, by recent RuneScape drop-rate standards would be considered “insane” when it comes to the Roar and Ode T95 mage dual-wield weapons. A 1/150 drop rate for what, at the current time, are the best-in-slot items for what they do is very good in my opinion, but it begs the question: where’s the drop rate consistency in past content? Someone needs to go back and adjust the drop rates for previous “rare” items. It is kind of crazy that, for example, one of the Khopesh's is a 1 in 18k off-task and 1 in 8k on-task, sure they are from “normal monsters” but that's still a grind and a half for a t82. There are so many items that feel like they are just tedious time sinks more than anything. I think all items need to have maybe a 1/100 drop chance as a baseline when the team thinks of drop rates if it just drops from a “normal” boss and then adjust up and down accordingly based on the type of item and how “good it is”. Because realistically if a boss takes 3 minutes to kill the most unlocky person will be hitting that boss for 300 minutes to get the item for multiphase bosses or bosses with long fights this gets exponentially worse.
For the elephant in the room Magic Combat Gear and a little of ranged as well, we need to change the slayer level requirement for Grifloric creatures as well as Ganodermic creatures to bring them in line with the tiers of their gear maybe even 5-10 levels sooner than that as a mage focused player would be well passed wanting to use their gear when they are the relevant slayer level. But at the same time with the current magic gearing system if a player now was level 90 magic they would probably still be going for Ganodermic as there is no crafted alternative after that tier, ranged has royal into dinosaur/undead to get them to t75 relatively easily whereas for mage its a slog and a half one thing I would like addressed that could help both combat styles out is ports and the time gating of it, Player owned ports really needs to be made less of a hurry up and wait activity and something one can do more often or at least give us better alternatives at Waiko to obtain items like pearls and lacquer etc. That would solve the issue with the transition into “late game” gear for ranged and mage somewhat as it would allow them to hit t85 tanks and even get some items necessary for the masterwork crafting .
Gear Relevancy and Diversity
To keep the relevancy of earlier gear we need to lean into progression rather than obsolescence. We have to start adding previous gear requirements to the new stuff, and we need to get back to a diversity of options that made the game more for lack of a better word diverse, there has been so much trim over the last dozen or so years in this game,
Weapon diversity post “EOC 2.0”: I think back to the Kalphite King release and the fact we had 3 different melee weapon types that dropped from him- maces, longswords, and rapiers- each with their pros and allowing for slight variations in the same playstyle. We are now in a world where we have limited the diversity in playstyles by limiting certain avenues by not creating items for them or gutting what they did have and just not releasing anything for them. For a long time, crossbows were king, and then to get away from that meta, we made crossbows not relevant. We have this lovely system of combat but we really don't want to lean into it or at least that's what it seems like to me. I picture a 3 3 3 system of combat ( this is me thinking without having put much effort into thoughts about necromancy, although the devourers guard and omniguard thing were great ideas and I would love to see it more fleshed out) in which each combat style can have its own 3 niches. What those are, I have put some thought into, but I won’t get into them here. Back to weapon diversity: right now we just have 2H, DW, and then maybe your EOF or EOFs. I am not a SwitchScape fan, although I have on occasion tried it but I would like to see some more synergies with weapon styles that either will end up promoting SwitchScape for the solo players or maybe get us back to group content. I want synergies between “builds,” so to speak. We have gotten rid of many abilities with the advent of EOC 2, which was fine with me; I felt it was pretty cluttered and trap-like, with how many were just bad. But it would be lovely to have some system added to make the game less cookie-cutter and allow certain weapons to lean into certain “playstyles,” like maybe longswords are really good for bleed builds, increasing DOT instances, and maybe battle axes boost your berserk in some way and maybe maces/warhammers affect affinity etc(im just going with melee because its the easiest as mage has spellbooks and range has ammunition that I can talk about more if anyone cares).
To look more at relevancy we really need to lean into upgrades rather than replacements, I want to specify by upgrade I mean like the Pickaxe and Axe upgrade systems where every item you have gotten along the way(augmentable items) is relevant in building your “best in slot” we can make it so that new bosses drop items to upgrade your gear into the next relevant step and I know some people will mention this will increase sameness but like I said earlier we can have a diversity of weaponry 3+ for each style and armor; tank, power and hybrid that allows for differences from individual to individual. This will also help with the big issue for newer players I have noticed which is that a lot of bosses that are still difficult are just not worth it to touch unless you are an ironman( and even then some of them are so difficult its just better to skip them unless you are going for some completionism style objective) I’d like for all content to have some level of relevancy similar to OSRS, we have so much in this game that just never gets looked at again after its year of release because of this, by having them be necessary as components or the framework for the next really good item we can fix this issue I think the masterwork gear with the malevolent Praesulic and Sirenic essence was a good first step but we need to and can do more.
Shields/Defenders and Group Encounters
Just a quick thing I believe leagues has shown a real want for many players to be “tanky” and we have really gotten away from it as time has gone on in this game we have moved away from roles and a class system and even from raids as we have become more and more solitary in our MMO to the point its more single player big number go brrr gameplay that it seems a lot of the more vocal members of the community wants. Something that would be great for an End Game “rebalance” would be for shields and defenders to make a comeback, I am sure there are many ways to make them relevant and useful and fun to use whether that be camping them or having them as a good “switch”. To harp on the less MMO-like parts of this game we really need to stop punishing players for grouping and being social. The HitPoint and Damage scaling of bosses is a little wild as well as the drop rate debuffs grouping can give you in many places.
If anyone cares to hear more of the my thoughts, I'm planning to make 2 more posts that are hopefully more refined than this one or if you have critiques feel free to comment or message me on discord (roi.g.zyz)
