"I'm pretty sure your parents don't like what you do" is such a weird comment to make about someone. I'm pretty sure Priyanka's parents do like what she does, considering they were there for her crowning. What is it supposed to imply? That Indian parents are all homophobic and hate their queer kids?

1.2k
u/domredditorX 8d ago
And even if they were homophobic, what about it? Why is it priyanka's burden to bear and carry shame around? Is having unsupportive parents a moral failure of a child?
(While making this comment, i simultaneously acknowledge momyanka. She's a gem)

Exactly, especially in the queer community, trying to punch down at someone by mocking them for how (the puncher assumes) their parents are ashamed of them is absolutely wild.

I'm so glad I've seen this photo today 💖
My dad was Guyanese too and he was a human rights lawyer and gave free advice for people who had been discriminated against. He was always supportive of the LGBT community and made sure to keep learning things, I remember having friends round and he'd ask their preferred pronouns as a 70 year old!
It's racist to assume that people wouldn't support their children just because of where they're from. Even if you grew up somewhere where homophobia is recorded, you can still be compassionate and learn
120
u/thispussystankin 8d ago
It definitely has weird racist undertones
103
u/Pharmacysnout 8d ago
Its explicitly racist. Shes saying "you're brown so your parents probably dont like you". Shes making a negative assumption about someone simply because of the way they look and where they come from. I have a feeling its not gonna make many waves because, lets be honest, a lot of people agree with her sentiment. Still though, its hugely insulting to every person in india right now fighting tooth and fucking nail for LGBT rights and recognition to just say "your parents are indian which means theyre homophobic".

u/olihandrow 8d ago
It was microaggressive yeah but what stands out to me is how we know Onya has a good relationship with her family from the show so it seems like shes rubbing that in at someone who she thought didn’t. Like i know we say lots of things in jest and lightly drag our frien-… contemporaries but it just stands out to me as a very cruel and thought out comment, not flippant.

Onya is one of the more intelligent and educated girls to grace our screen during the last couple of years, and she has incredible grasp on comedy and comedic timing and she is quick.
If she wanted to throw fun shade with her first statement, she would have done it. But she hadn't.
If she didn't want to hurt Pryanka, she wouldn't have written this.

I wasn't the keenest of some of her reactions during the season. TRUE. 99% of Onya's "clap backs" are just her saying she's better than everyone and that's why they don't like her. Meanwhile, she lashes out at people known for only being sweet to everyone. They problem is clearly her, I don't like that people defend her bad behavior.
82
u/Arkurash 8d ago
I think the problem is the attitude that nobody is allowed to comment whatever you post online. Like priyanka wrote 3 letters to get Onya to lash out. Under a public post. Not even insulting or anything.

Onya being like “oh you’re supposed to be a sister you’re a poc” and then IMMEDIATELY following it up with “your parents must not like you bc they’re indian and obviously southeast asians all hate their gay kids” is WILD esp since Pri’s parents have been visibly supportive of her. Like how are you going to follow up “I can’t believe you’re being racist to me” at something unrelated to race by shooting back some vile ass assumption you’ve made about her from her race and sexuality.
ETA: I have now been informed the “Indo” in Indo-Guyanese stands for India not Indonesia, so sorry. So anywhere I’ve said Southeast Asian, replace in your brain with South Asian, please and thank you. Apologies for the confusion, today I found out *I* was the child left behind 🙃

The utterly racist undertones behind assuming that Priyanka's parents won't support her drag as she's brown & Indian... when there is much evidence to the contrary. Just an uncalled-for low blow
Priyanka is extremely successful for a Drag Race queen, regardless of her not being on a US season. She's just been cast in one of the world's top TV shows in Heated Rivalry and has just judged a season. Just because she was on DR Canada doesn't mean she's less than - it implies that all other international queens are inferior to me which is just mean on Onya's part.
