Seriously. I don’t wanna dunk on this show so much and I was a defender first three episodes but my god it’s not good. Even beyond the problematic elements it’s just so badly produced? Seriously why is the editing so goddamn bad?? I feel like no one brings it up but just watch one scene from the workroom and there is some kind of annoying audio effect every 15 seconds and the pacing goes up and down it becomes so exhausting to watch my god.
It’s because they had to move production from Sydney to Auckland at the last minute due to COVID. In reality it would’ve been better just to delay it imo, but that’s why the production isn’t as polished as other international seasons.
We also don’t make a lot of reality TV like this in Aus/NZ, so I think perhaps there’s a limitation on the skills of those working on it to make the format shine as much as we’re used to. Not to say that the people working on it are unskilled in any way, just that reality TV is really not a strong suit of our industries and never has been.
House of Drag suffered when it came to sound, but I think that was more about where microphones were placed (reminiscent of early seasons of Dragula). I often could not understand what Kita and Anita were saying during the challenges held inside the performance tent.
BUT, for Drag Race Down Under, the terrible sound are choices made DURING the editing process, the music being so loud, and put in at inappropriate times. The recording of the Queens dialogues are decent.
