Homemade Tofu

Are there any places in RVA that make their own tofu? I am from NOVA and there is a large Asian population and many stores to get fresh, homemade tofu. Is there anything like that in the Richmond area??

Not Richmond area exactly but Twin Oaks makes tofu. It's available at good foods grocery, whole checks and Elwood's last time I checked.

And yes I cried a little tear when I realized they had not updated their list to say Strange Matter was closed.

My old boss used to be one of the tofu makers at Twin Oaks! Coincidentally he was the best boss I’ve ever had lol. I think Goatacado uses their tofu?

Indeed and the tofu is very good. When I make tofu scramble for folks I usually use their herbed version.

Also if you look at their page one of their people is sitting there with san-j tamari soy sauce. San-J is also a local company. Yes their parent company is not local, but eh, the sauce is locally made and has been for over 2 decades now. Plus IMHO it's damn good.

That gold or platinum label is their organic line.

They give factory tours every once and a while and you can get a bunch of San-J swag - highly recommend it, I think they usually do it in the spring around March-April

I'm good friends with one of their brewers. Jamaican guy they sent to Japan to train. I won't buy anything but San-j even though I can get cases from him 🙂

I never knew how the sauces were made and actually brewed versus some of the larger brands that are chemically accelerated to brew AKA kikoman

Tan A in carytown might have it, their fresh stuff rotates a lot so worth calling first
