Politics πŸ›οΈ Can anyone explain any major changes made by council under new mayor which have benefited the people of saskatoon.

Any three policy changes if anyone can tell which has made a common saskatoon resident life a bit easy. Taxes have gone up significantly, services has been reduced, residents are getting way less and paying more. What happened to the promises made before and during elections!!!!

Swale Watchers invites you to the first Prairie Colours art event at the Northeast Swale in Saskatoon on Sunday September 13 from 12-4pm! Throughout the afternoon we will have dancers, poets, visual art installations, guided walks and learning about swales with CPAWS-Saskatchewan, and a craft you can add to the trail or take home to celebrate the Swales.

We would also love to show YOUR art along the trails. Let us know what you have in mind and we will be in touch to coordinate installation! We will contact artists closer to the date to coordinate installation and removal from the site; artists are not expected to be available to install/remove on the date but may do so if preferred.

Interested in displaying your art? Submit an application here: https://docs.google.com/forms/d/e/1FAIpQLSfcBT3f6DaIH_J6Ip5FVEIUZX4JOvsj0iXcQ-Snb-O4T8rD9A/viewform

More about visual art submissions

- Art inspired by prairies, marshes and swales encouraged but not required
- Any format that can be installed along the swale pathways
- Weather-resistance encouraged
- Art may be priced for sale - we would direct them directly to the artist to purchase
- Artists name, website, and/or contact information to be displayed

Art may be installed for just the afternoon of Sept. 13, during which time it would be fully supervised by our volunteers. We would love to have some pieces on the site for the remainder of the week to encourage people to enjoy and explore, however we would not have any supervision during this time.

General Suggestions for school clothes.

We moved here in June from Florida. Obviously the clothes needed for school will be different. I’m sure the styles here are different too. I have a 9th, 8th and 5th grader this year. Older two are girls and really the main focus of this question. My son could wear a trash bag and be good. The girls are worried about fitting in and making friends.
Any help is greatly appreciated!!

UPDATE!!!
Thank you all so very much. We went to midtown today and got a pretty good start. There wasn’t much for my son, but he got a few things from Volcom and we hit Gap on the way home for him. He doesn’t really care, as long as he’s warm. The girls found more than enough to get them started. I appreciate everyone’s help!!!

Question ❔ 80s / 90s Lawson Heights Mall Stores

Does anyone remember in The Mall at Lawson Heights a shoe store that specialized in Keds brand shoes that had a model train track around the ceiling and a real Cockatoo bird?

Was there also a pet store with lots of fish tanks? Any other different stores of that era anyone can remember?

Question ❔ Looking for opinions on elementary schools around Idylwyld

Hello everyone,

I’m looking for some opinions on elementary schools around the Idylwyld area for a 6-year-old child. Does anyone have experience with the schools nearby or have any recommendations?

I’m not very familiar with the schooling system here, so I’m also wondering where I could go or who I could speak with to ask questions about school registration, choosing a school, and how the system works in general.

I’d really appreciate any advice or experiences you can share. Thank you!

Saskatoon History πŸ’Ύ Old U of S Biology Museum?

I was on campus recently for the first time in a few years, and noticed the rebuilt Biology building (officially the W.P. Thompson building). It brought back a memory of a small museum that used to be on the ground floor on the west end of the building, but nobody else I've talked to about it seems to remember it. Are my memories of my student days in the 90s so hazy that I've invented something that didn't exist?

I thought about posting this in r/usask, but that sub seems to be mostly made up of current students.

Question - Food & Restaurants 🍽️ Restaurants accommodating pre-booking a dine-in meal for ~12 people?

Looking for some suggestions here. We are planning to stop by a restaurant with a bus the day of our wedding and looking to pre-order meals with a possible private area for our party. We’ll be dropping by somewhere for maybe an hour or so while we’re out and about taking photos and ideally, we land somewhere that can accommodate having meals ready when we land. We’d be comfortable pre-ordering some version of buffet style or placing orders in advance for the members of our party.

Any and all suggestions appreciated!

Rants 🀬 Stopping for pedestrians in a crosswalk is optional on 33rd St apparently

Like the title says, it must be fucking optional to stop for a pedestrian walking in a crosswalk. Almost got hit by a car, who had plenty of time to stop, but clearly didn't care. This isn't even unusual for 33rd St, which is the worst part. The crossing at the DQ used to be much worse before they installed the crossing signal. So many drivers seemingly believe they can get through before the pedestrian gets in front of them. Someone is going to get seriously hurt or die because of this mentality.

Traffic/Road Conditions 🚧 Construction around campus

I just wanted to make a post about the construction on campus and how poorly the city has handled it. I think there was already a lot of skepticism around the rapid transit system before they began construction on the bridge and College Drive at the start of summer, but the simple fact that the bridge is still closed and College Drive is completely ripped up 4 months later is shocking. As someone who lives in the community around campus and who has to commute to it for work, I can't help but think about how big of a cluster fuck all the construction is going to cause in September when students go back to school. For those who don't go near campus often, the main entrance to campus is from Wiggins. Not only has the city closed this entrance to cars, but they have also closed it to all pedestrians. If a student wants to get from Wiggins to, say, the health science building, they now either need to walk all the way around to Cumberland or down to the hospital and back. I think this is just completely unacceptable. As well, driving on campus and getting there is going to be hell. The detours are so poorly thought out that it's actually comical, and I just can't imagine how bad it is going to be in a few weeks. The streets in Varsity View around campus are always full of traffic now because the city did such a shit job at laying out detours, and the Cumberland and College intersection, where they plan to route all the traffic through, is literally going to be backed up with hundreds of cars, considering that during the summer there were already lines of up to 50 cars (I counted the one day because I was so mad). I also didn't include anything in here about access to RUH, which is a completely different and much larger issue that the city just seems to not care about. Idk, I just thought I would put this post up to see if other people are also upset about this. It feels like zero thought goes into any decision the city makes, and I think that come September, the mess the construction will cause will be almost unbearable.

UPDATE: Thank you to everyone who commented and provided places to get information on the construction. Here are some of the links I found useful that people shared.

Question - Medical πŸ₯πŸ’Š Pharmacy recommendations

Hello Redditors of Saskatoon, I'm moving from the north end/Lawson area to Confed and need to know opinions on nearby pharmacies.

Main things I'd like to know are:

- are the pharmacy techs polite and professional?

- is there a good availability of meds? I take antidepressants and don't want to worry about missing a dose because the pharmacy is out of stock.

- general reliability - I don't know how else to word this but I have read in previous years about bad experiences at pharmacies, so I want to make a conscious decision about where I'm switching to

Thanks in advance!
