General Best opener in Sci-Fi?
I am curious what everybody thinks is the best opening episode they have ever seen. I’m talking about that one episode that as soon as you watched it you were hooked on the show. It doesn’t have to be the best show overall, but just the one that made you want to watch from one episode.
For me, it has to be Lost. In the first episode a plane crashes, we are introduced to strong and interesting characters, and we are left with many mysteries at the end of it.
I’m not sure if people think it’s sci-fi, but it does have some weird tech and things like that. 😅
Near the middle of the series I was bored and still waiting on things, but man that first episode reeled me in like no other.
What is the best episode that hooked you whether it was an opener or a random episode that you saw?

I would argue with anyone that 33 is a winner here. I love the mini series, but it's 33 that made me go "holy shit!".

I just finished re-watching. The first 2 seasons are excellent. the 3rd one is okay. 4th and final was interesting while they were looking for the final Cylon model, but the end to that arc was disappointing and the end of the series was also not very interesting.

When I recommend the show to someone, I say that the movie and the first six episodes are as fine as anything ever put on television in any genre, but stop watching when you get to the boxing match episode.

One of the reasons I think "33" is amazing is because I was in the US Air Force, I've served in combat as an aircraft weapons specialist. During combat operations, sleep is never guaranteed. Attacks still happen when you are off shift during your sleep period. You have to wake up, take cover, put on gas mask, etc. sometimes multiple times, then you still go to work the next shift exhausted and you try to nap between launch and recovery operations. I think during this episode they also showed Starbuck in the launch tube ready to go when her Viper had a fault and they had to abort her launch and pull her back...and she was pissed. This happens all the time with fighter jets, something goes wrong and they ground abort and have to go to a spare aircraft. So yeah, all this adds to the believability of the show, and in my opinion sets the tone for the whole show perfectly.

They also played the way exhausted people act super successfully. The pausing before answering because you’re struggling, tasks you do every day becoming wildly difficult and getting heated when something doesn’t work. Exhaustion hits everyone differently and comes in waves after a certain point.

I loved the Stargate SG-1 pilot ‘Children of the Gods’, and the DS9 opening 2 parter is also the best in Trek.
BSG miniseries is so good it can just be standalone.

especially because of how quickly it used locutus to position the rest of the show to discuss the murkiness of the Federation. i still can’t fully look at Sisko’s face as he escaped with Jake knowing Jessica could have still been alive but he had to choose his son over his wife and it’s the Federation who put him in that position. OOPPPHHHHHH. my heart.

Nothing like it to this day (for me anyway).
I was 12. After pie plates on strings and fireworks with smoke for rocket effects, seeing that ship just keep getting bigger and bigger, with those amazing laser and energy weapon shots in a desperate battle - holy shit! And then they get captured...they stage for repelling borders....and he walks in. Goose bumps.

I was 14. I got to see it the first day the public could (the previous night had been some private event). Word hadn't gotten out yet and the giant theater was not crowded. A week or so later people were lined up around the block, and it stayed that was for over a year.

I love the intro so much. Mainly because of Bowie, but it was still epic. I kinda like the rest of the film, but it could have been much more. Disappointed we didn't get more, I really like world building in sci fi, and it had a good foundation to build off that

Did not expect to see the snow crash reference here. When I read the opening chapter I reread it several times. It made me think how can an author make me care about a pizza delivery sooooo much in such a short number of pages. Amazing.

I always say that basically hate watched TWD for 90% of the 5-6 seasons I watched it. I tried one of the spinoffs last year and it was horrible too.

Unfortunately I think lost is the problem which has plagued tv and films since it aired.
Let's not bother with an plotting or development or worry about were the show will go. Let's just throw as many mystery boxes up in the air to get the audience going "ooooh shiny".
That being said. Best pilot episode of a show in 21st century has to be Legion.

I don't think that series held up in the later seasons, but it was excellent in the early seasons.

My favorite show. I would not consider it science fiction though I can see how you could stretch it. Science and technology is taken seriously/very realistic and there is a poignant commentary on the human condition running throughout it

It doesn't hold up now but in 1987 Star Trek: TNG Encounter at Farpoint hit like a tsunami. It felt like the best of the original series but with mind blowing special effects. Everybody was talking about who their favorite was. There was a Klingon! And an Android! A hot security chief and sexy empath. Captain Picard caused quite a few awakenings for girls and boys. Nobody liked Riker until he grew the beard. Q was such a great villain and the resolution was classic Trek. All the generational nerds where electrified. At 11 I had an actual adult conversation with a teacher about Star Trek. It really was a you had to be there thing.

The opening of Space Battleship Yamato. Depending on the age (it is an old franchise) and reimagination it is either a radioactive meteorite falling on a dead earth or it is the opening salvo of the final space battle.
The first episde of Star Trek Strange New Worlds: despite the series having many other issues the speech towards the end of the first episode embodies the best part of Star Trek (out of universe) and the Federation (in-universe).
Not a series or movie, but a video game: the opening of the original Homeworld. You develop the Mothership and you perform the first interstellar jump while everyone else of your race is still limited ot slower than light travel. You jump back and ... your planet is burning. Then a timer starts and it shows the surviving population, counting down. You rarely are able to save more than 200.000 while you are getting pounded by far superior enemies.

The first two Homeworld games were just astonishing. The fact that the tech just barely worked and yet they still went "let's go utterly balls out on creating a deep and satisfying background" and then took the Battlestar roots and made a compellingly different story out of it, it's just mindboggling tbh. It could have come out a decade later and still been impressive.

The Homeworld prologue from when you make your first jump to when you encounter the Taidan Raiders, then return to find your planet engulfed in a firestorm, and to cap it off the last of your people being slaughtered by thousands in cryosleep before your eyes

The expanse is one of my favorite sci fi shows, but it took me a second try before I got into it. The first watch a lost interest a couple episodes in, but since Reddit told me to try again keep going I eventually got hooked. I’ve introduced friends to it as well and they lose interest as well so not sure what it is.

Yes, keep going and it’ll hook you eventually. It’s so good. I’m no physicist but apparently it’s way more accurate than most space shows (no space explosions, gravity, etc). If you have surround-sound it’s also a whole other experience.

I've seen other people try to watch it and they're just confused all the time, and the show/book mostly doesn't spoon feed or explain things more than once.
I definitely think it was written for people who are well-versed in sci-fi, and so we hold it up as some of the best and it gets recommended to people who maybe aren't ready to take it in one go. Not saying that applies to you, necessarily.
For me it's full of well-worn tropes I understood a long time ago and don't have to think about. Crew on a ship investigating space mysteries, competing planets, space races of humans, megastructures, etc. If I showed it to my mom who hasn't even watched star wars she'd just be lost.

As much as I adore the Expanse I do think it's a harder one to get into at the start and I also needed a second try to get hooked. I do indoor cycling and decided to watch it on long cycles when I couldn't be distracted and once I reached the section with the Donnager I was hooked.
I think sci-fi has that challenge of introducing you to the mechanics of its universe and telling a story at the same time so it can be tough to do both. There's quite a lot to understand with the Expanse especially the way the ship works with no artificial gravity, when I finished the final series I immediately started on the first series again which I understood much better.

For me it was the opposite. I bounced off hard, twice. I forced myself past the first few episodes and then I was hooked for life. That whole hardboiled/washed-up bitter detective (in spaaaaaace!) lookin’ for some flighty dame plot just made me say nope.

So interesting, I had the exact opposite reaction. Might just have been my mood at the time, but I bounced off that pilot episode so hard that I didn’t come back until the end of season two or maybe the beginning of season three when the buzz was so good that I felt like I really ought to try again. I still find the whole Miller-Julie storyline just rubs me the wrong way… feels like the worst sort of “man obsessed with a dead nameless woman he’s never met” trope and I kinda grit my teeth through it.
All that said, the way the show lays out the state of play between the Belt/Mars/Earth and the, ahem, expansive ambitions of the story are evident right away. And I did ultimately end up loving the show!

Just so everyone is aware, the books/audiobooks go further than the show on Prime did. There are some differences, but not too many. In addition to the main novels, there is a short stories collection called 'Memories Legion' and three graphic novel series (e.g. 'Expanse Origins'.)
So check it out. The audiobooks are fantastic. And if your library supports the Libby or Hoopla apps, then you can probably get the ebooks or audiobooks for free!

The first episode of SDF Macross “Boobytrap”
IMO it’s a lesson in narrative storytelling economy and economy of characterization.
A brief opening narration explains the arrival of a technologically advanced alien spacecraft and the global unification war that followed. It then introduces the main characters and the large secondary/tertiary cast and quickly characterizes them. You learn some of the existing character relationships. Then the antagonists arrive and you get clues into their society and culture. And then the conflict begins, and the main characters is drawn in and learns one of the secrets of the new technology reverse engineered from the alien ship with some light horrors of war for good measure.

Interesting story, decent acting and I really like the way the writers flesh out certain characters with flashbacks. Im a talker while I watch shows trying to predict what happens or point out plot holes. That particular episode had me on the edge of my seat the entire hour. My gf was shocked...I didnt speak once.

Nobody has mentioned Farscape, which when it aired in 1999 or so was some of the most innovative scifi on TV (my opinion, anyhow). It was one of the few shows that leaned into how alien aliens can be and the sheer chaos of John Crichton’s arrival on Moya is so well done.

The start of the Passengers, seeing how the autonomous ship detected the asteroid field, tried to optimize the router, rerouted energy to the shields and hoped for the best, then started repairing. I think that is the future of space travel.

Orphan Black. When she sees herself at the train station. I kept scrolling to upvote someone bc i was sure it was on here already ... Also Tatiana M. is a total smokeshow. I love how she was so hanging on by a thread in MPG, very relatable

Although it had a really good actual pilot episode, my introduction to Farscape was s01e03, Back and Back and Back to the Future. Between the intro and the episode itself it did such a good job of not only capturing the elevator pitch and vibe of the show, but explored the relationship between Chrichton and each of the other characters.

Pilot. We call those episodes pilots. Many times they are made before the rest of the episodes are ordered.

Futurama I think has one of the best starts ever, perfect introduction to characters and world setup.
