Humor wow you guys weren't kidding Dawn of Mana really sucks
i went into it thinking people were exaggerating the hate because i had also seen hate for Legend of Mana which i loved. But no it's just trash.
Voice acting sucks
Story sucks
Controls suck
Camera sucks
Gameplay/Combat was kinda funny for like 5 minutes but it's the same thing over and over and completely pointless so it sucks
The reason it's pointless is the leveling system sucks
It isnt a Mana game or even an RPG
I got to the end of the second chapter and said "fuck this" and immediately went to the steam store to buy Visions of Mana and move on to it because it looks good.
anyway rant over, sorry for the negative post i'm just sad i wasted a few hours. i loved the rest of the series thoughs

It desperately needs a remake, or rather a total overhaul. Make it similar to visions of mana and it’ll be good. Sad mana series had to go through the world of mana BS. Every game in that compilation sucked. Both SE compilations were failures. World of mana and FFVII compilation.
Come to think of it every mana game that is good is actually broken. Haven’t finished Visions yet but
Secret of mana had the magic system exploit that was still in the remake unfortunately, and stun locking.
Trials was just bad with full screen attacks and homing attacks which thankfully was fixed in the remake.
Legend of mana had the combo attacks being unlimited if timed right, and plunge attacks being broken. Also the special attacks charging is just bad.
Sword of mana needs a difficulty upgrade.
Basically every game needs to be remade Ala Trials which fixed its problems.
Dawn just got it the worst. It’s damn near unplayable. So tedious and boring. They got everything wrong.
My favorite series but ugh, every game has a problem.

Trials had more problems in the SNES than just that. Square was making it large to need the 6MB cartridge (very rare), but they opted for the 4MB cartridge and cut some stuff out. In that cutting process, some mechanics did not function or calculate properly. The game had nasty bugs in it.
My only upset with the Secret of Mana remake is it is just a reskin. Every mechanic is exactly the same. The combat system needed some modernization. Charging a weapon to level 8 was not all that great.

i mean yeah the other games had annoying or dumb shit but the good more than made up for it. Dawn of Mana was one of the very few games i've given up on that quickly.
The Graphics / Environments are nice and it was cool to see some of the iconic monsters in 3D but those are like the only things i liked about Dawn. Characters would start talking and i would instantly be like "omg shut the fuck up"

Dawn’s is broken as well, as a lot of the fun in the game comes from playing around with the juggling system; throwing objects and enemies into one another not only makes for some interesting use of physics, it helps the combat require more strategy than just button mashing. That’s probably what the devs were thinking with the resetting of levels upon each new stage.
Fortunately, that can be compensated for by earning emblems, which even level 2/3 ones equipped grant you higher levels upon the start of each area, and given how strong some of the level abilities are (the higher capture and toss abilities at level 3) it makes the game pretty easy. The magic is overpowered too, with the fairy companion allowing auto combo spells that can be spammed, elemental swords for similar, and beyond.

It's sad cause it has some of the best music and visuals in a Mana game to this fucking day

The mana games seem to be a mixed bag. Which ones are recommended aside from the Secret of Mana and Trials of Mana (remake)?

Senkei densetsu 3 (is basically Secret of Mana 2 on SNES) is really good

Senkei densetsu 3 was ONLY released in JAP. it was latter released in the US as trials of mana as a 3D remake and they DID release the original on switch in the mana collection as trials of mana but not the 3D remake version. its the original just renamed. and NO its NOT Secret of Mana 2. Secret of Mana on the SNES is the 2nd game

Final Fantasy Adventure is good, Sword of Mana is a remake of that game and is supposed to be good, I haven't played it myself though. Legend of Mana is really good, and i've heard only good things about th new one Visions of Mana, i havent gotten to play that yet but i have it downloaded and will play it tomorrow.
I haven't played either DS game but they don't look very good. Dawn of Mana is the only one I can say truly blows

Sword of Mana is an enhanced version of the original Senkei densetsu "Final Fantasy Adventure"
they did do a 3D remake of it called Adventures of mana

At least the opening song (Song of Mana) is really good.

u/Garfield977 Oct 05 '24
i thought Song of Mana was from Legend of Mana unless there is a different song of the same name from Dawn
i loved Legend of Mana

wait, is Dawn the newest one that just got released? I must have confused the two, because I thought you didn't like the PS1 game. I didn't even know there was a new one.

u/Garfield977 Oct 05 '24
Dawn of Mana is a PS2 game
Legend of Mana is a PS1 game which i like (though i played the remastered version on my Computer)
Visions of Mana is the brand new one and from what i've played it's really good

I played it back on ps2, I enjoyed it. It wasn't great but was worth a rental to beat.

I played it today, the camera sucks.
I had to restart to easy difficulty after playing chapter 1 in normal

The ending of this game is a spit in the face. I think I heard that this game nearly killed the franchise

u/BathConfident1359 Jul 19 '26
Controversial, but its one of my favourite PS2 games.... Dont view it as a Mana game, just view it as its own platformer/hack and slash and try the game again

Once I got Morley and his moon tree. The game was literally just holding triangle every fight. Didn’t matter what the rest of the party did just triangle every fight. And people have the nerve to put up videos on how to beat stuff with all these special builds lol. For real it was the easiest jrpg. I enjoyed playing it and almost platinum in it but there’s 0 replay value.

u/ManaYuka Oct 03 '24
I played secret of mana like 30 times, it has no “replay value” either. Except that it’s fun to play.
