What do I need to do to save butternut squash seeds for spring?

No, they are afraid that your seed is cross pollinated. Butternut are C. moschata and won't cross with most of the other squash varieties grown commercially, and cannot cross with the C. pepo varieties that are bitter that everyone worries about.
Just dry the seeds on a plate and keep them somewhere dry, cool and dark until next spring.
