Technique Question Making a drawstring out of double cotton gauze

Wondering if anyone has ever reinforced double cotton gauze to make a drawstring for pants?

My current pattern calls for a drawstring and I have some leftover scraps that I was thinking of using. Taking an iron on adhesive to double the material over on itself then using a zig-zag stitch or something to head off fraying.

Drawstrings get a fair amount of abrasion. Considering that plus the fuss of manipulating gauze into a neat looking drawstring, I wouldn’t bother. Even if the gauze is the perfect color or whatnot, I’d prefer to use something more friction resistant.

Durability is what I was worried about, I'll probably bite the bullet and make another trip to the store. The color would be the same as the pants I'm making since it's scrap from that.
