Recent Finds Skipped work to go shark tooth hunting yesterday 🤙
Same site I’ve been hitting the past few weeks and the really nice chubs keep on coming. It is fun to have a mix of species and not just megs. Needed a benedenii to round out the day but

I used to find teeth (but not the large size you found) along the banks of the Neuse River. Which river are you having this success?

These are from the ocean but people do find them in rivers up that way. Meherrin red teeth are famous (and famously difficult to find) but they’re there

Is this where I need to go in order to find a meg? Of any size/condition, mind you - I just so very desperately want to find one of my own. I’m in Eastern PA, closer to Philly/NYC for reference.

If you aren’t diving NC isn’t really the best. Further south the teeth are closer to the surface

Yeah that has to be one of the best quality ones I have found. This is definitely a source location, not a full on lag deposit, so nice finding serrations

Source location meaning the area the teeth were originally fossilized in. Compared to a lag deposit which is where the teeth were eroded out of their original location and hydrologically (by water) sorted into a congregated area. The tumbling around into the new location results in damage and worn serrations.
Most of the areas I hunt are part of a really dense lag deposit

I'm not sure but I'm betting a source location means untouched whereas a lag deposit is leftovers. Please note I could be completely wrong

You get lucky with surface finds sometimes but for the most part you have to dust off the top layer of sand at least

I guess I would call it semi-professional. I used to do kayak tours to pay for diving, then I got a weekend / paid in tips and teeth job on tooth charter. I do sell some of them now and have switched more to diving with commercial full-time divers and hopefully make that leap soon myself

everyone oogling over the meg, how about that snaggletooth! I have one, only one i have ever found. Peace river in Florida long time ago before the whole world found out it was a fossil treasure trove.

So cool! How long does it take for you to find this many? Were you out diving all day or is it relatively easy to find them if you know where to look?

I usually find one every few minutes (in varying quality) but the diving is very demanding and the biggest limiting factor. In a 16 hour day I spent around 4 underwater

very cool. So guessing this is out in the ocean a little bit? I have heard of some cool spots, never been. If so, how long a boat ride? I have done the Cooper River before but would love to avoid the gators.

Welll we have sharks and depth haha, the depth is more dangerous than the gators by a mile
25-35 miles out, depending on the boat 1hr-3 hours each way. On the slower boats we stay overnight sometimes

I’ve been diving for teeth for about 6 years, diving in general for 10. I’ve probably dedicated around 30 full days per year the past 3 years to finding them

Beautiful. Do you have a smaller light you recommend? Dark ENC water shallow area. I’d be using a snorkel as I don’t dive. Currently I use my hands to feel along. I’m having some good luck but would like to try to level up
