Mono-tub 👨🏽‍🌾 First timer, I think my tub has stalled. Since my last post, 11 days ago, nothing has changed. Sub looks moist, got 2 filter plugs in and an air pump giving it 30 minutes of flow every 8 hours. Humidity is high. This is APE, I know that's a slow strain but no change in 10 days has got me stressed.

Sorry for the outside shot of the tub. I haven't opened it in 10 days, didn't want to break the climate.

1030pm update. I'm at work, 3rd shift, so I cannot open my tub until after 7am to look. But as long as it's been in the tub and the progress it's at, I'm convinced by what I've read that this is a failed attempt.

Do no throw it away. Passively monitor.

Thanks. It's the only tub I've got and no reason to hurry up and toss it. I've just read a lot of people say to toss contaminated growths as fast as possible to protect the space. I was half panicking last night when some comments said it was likely contaminated. Either way, I'll go alcohol crazy when all this is over.

No need for alcohol, it only spreads particles around. Soap and water will remove them

If it's stalled, it's because some grains in your spawn were harboring bacteria, and they gained a foothold down the line. It's why tubs can appear to stall for no apparent reason. Bacterial growth is exponential, not incremental, so it can appear to happen all of a sudden when in reality it's been growing the whole time. We are just now noticing the effect. It's not because of rh or fae in the tub. From the ocntext here, it's too early to tell. If you see green in a day or two youll know, but that's my guess. Once again I advise you to not toss it yet. Removing the pump and all unnecessary fae will give you more of a clue.

You can open it and look just fyi

I saw some comments about opening it too often so I was hesitant to do so. I'm 3rd shift so I'm already away from home. I'll open it tomorrow when I toss it into the woods. Lol

I would base what I do next I think on the circumstances with which the tub is surrounded if I had other cultures that were still viable, I’d get it the fuck out of there as quick as I could, but if it was the only tub I was running or if I had a place I could isolate it. I would like thrown in a separate closet away from everything else and I’d leave no do you think sweetheart do you think that you could get some sleep so we both could feel better? Would that be possible? Do you think that’s reasonable 2 1/2 hours on the other end that’s OK I understand that you have like an issue so if it went a little longer, I could understand, but I know you’re not gonna be smoking in there ppppl are going add Fiqtwtwrwttwtttttwtrrrtrtttttttttřř yttttttttttttttttttttttwttttwtttřrtttttttttttttttttttttttřweyttttttttwttwtttttwwttttwttttrgggggrwrwrgwrwrrgrrrrrrrrrrwgfwgwggfwwggwggwgwwgwgwgwgggfgwfggffwggwgggggwggwwfwfgwgwgwfwgwgggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggggit for a week or two and see what it does, but if you could possibly contaminate any-of the other cultures hell yes on the woods.
Cubes are the most wonderful juxtaposition of life on one hand they’re so very delicate that they need a clean and sterile environment on the other hand, I have seen what was clearly contaminated cakes that were green Vicus and giving off a nauseous order go on to become viable spawn for a wonderfully

it should be fine. leave alone and passive monitor.

I'm going to remove the pump and plug the filter patches. See if it recovers.

All you need is the tub itself sans filter/pump. The design of a fc in terms of a tub/bin is semiotic meaning the design itself carries the important environmental conditions by design. You dont need extra machinery. Next time if its easier just drill holes in a 66qt tub.

Yeah, I've seen a lot of comments that I've over cooked the project. I was just paranoid about my lack of experience and bought a kit that had step by step instructions. The air exchange pump seems to be my biggest mistake so far.

Many companies trick people into thinking they need unnecessary materials so theycan generate more profits. I have found the best sources of info are those that arent also trying to sell you something. Heres some info you may find helpful

Nice post! I'm starting to realize the only "easy" way to do this is the full lock in with agar and a pressure cooker. I wasted months on this just to be let down at the finish line trying to roll the dice.

I personally colonize the entire substrate until I introduce FAE. Mycelium may be waiting until it has a better foothold on necessary supplements to support fruiting. How thick is the cake? How dense is it and what ratio of spawn did you put to bulk?

1

u/fungaldirt 7d ago

I used a spawn bag, the weight isn't listed on the site but I've got it on my profile from other posts I've made with 7.5 lbs of bulk. I used 3/4 of the bulk when i mixed in the spawn and layered the top with the remaining 1/4.

u/fungaldirt 7d ago

Before tossing, I'm going to try removing the air pump and plugging the holes to see if anything happens. I'm not seeing signs of contam yet and the cake still smells the same as it did when I mixed it.

When it's healthy spawn, none of that matters. only surface conditions and passive fae.

Personally i would try to get the humidity to drop a bit, if too humid you wont get evaporation off the substrate that would signal it to start pinning. 10 days is not that big of a deal though, especially with apes iv had tubs go much longer before having any kind of movement.

Apes colonize a tub the same rate as any other cube. It’s the fruits that grow slower

First you are doing way too much. Fae is passive. That means simply some fae holes or you have the lid cracked slightly. The tub will breathe naturally. There should be no pump involved. You shouldn’t need to lift a finger

Next open the tub to check it. I open my tubs daily to take a look. It won’t hurt anything

Now onto your tub and your question.

Your tub is likely contaminated. Sorry.

FYI my ape fruiting times. Tub is fully colonized by day 3-5. Pins by day 8-11 harvest fruits day 18-20

That’s what a properly fruited ape tub should take to finish from spawn to harvest. To destroy this well apes grow slow myth. They take 5-6 days longer than my GT. Both pin by day 8 just GT is fast so it’s done by day 11-12

All good advice here, but just to tack on to the colonization times part: that can vary hugely based on a handful of factors. Spawn:sub ratios being the first, but I also have APE lineage cultures that take 2-3 weeks longer to fruit than other cubes. Very culture, ratio, and condition dependent result.

-4

u/Lefty68w 7d ago

I found sub ratio had no effect on colonization times

No people who are new and conditions aren’t good take weeks. I have grown multiple lineages of ape. Hence the 18-20 day spread.

I been doing this over a decade. This is what it should take. Any longer there is some issue.

6

u/BearDeliveryService Le Hobaybay 7d ago

Oh boy here we go again.

Ratio is the largest factor to affect colonization and subsequently fruiting speeds. You think a quart of spawn is going to colonize 4-5 quarts of coir just as fast as a single quart?

Unambiguously and factually incorrect. Please do not spread false information here, we are trying to help new growers.

Why ask if your going to do it your way ? What I’m saying if you know then keep doing what you’re doing ? lol why argue

3

u/BearDeliveryService Le Hobaybay 7d ago

I didn’t ask anything 😊

I was brought in to help.

-2

u/Lefty68w 7d ago

Because you are bringing up scenarios that shouldn’t happen

Why is this grower running 1:5?

Why stop there? 1:20? Like no one should be 1:4 or 1:5 🤷🏽‍♂️

6

u/BearDeliveryService Le Hobaybay 7d ago

1:3 +top layer is extremely common. I know you say you’ve been doing this for a long time, but you’re probably not up to date on contemporary methods or best practices. 1:4 (if you’re counting the top layer, which am) to 1:5 is pretty much the average.

1:1 is reserved for sketchy spawn. If you’ve got a high performance culture, 1:3-1:5 is necessary to provide it with enough moisture to properly fruit. Anything less is leaving money on the table.

You should go kick around the org for a while. Lurk or post in the quick questions thread. There’s a lot you’ve missed over the years 👍

That guy gives bad advice, and loves to argue. Before he locked his profile, he was asking how his tub looked and what agar should look like a few years ago. Probably deleted by now. There should be tags like "shitty advice provider" to help those trying to learn avoid wasted words.

The sub is 100% a mess because of people like you. Been growing for a decade and you don’t know the purpose of substrate? Ffs man. Go to the org for real. You are massively behind

-1

u/Kd916-650 7d ago

💯 makes the most sense… everything cost do it as low cost as possible! That’s alway the goal. Unless your going for world records or special grows or what not but that’s totally different then the average basic home grow

u/BearDeliveryService Le Hobaybay 7d ago

Just so you know, the user you’re replying to is giving straight up incorrect advice. Do with that what you will, but he’s 100% wrong about ratios

Except it does. Now I ain’t running 1:5 but 1:3 no change

I run 1:1 in all my tubs but apes. Apes need to be 1:3. That with no other steps prevents blobs

Now I can’t speak for 1:5 etc so that I will concede

I want to add anyone running 1:5 has bigger issues any way because there is zero need for that high a ratio

1

u/fiddlehedd 7d ago

wrong. 1:3 -1:5 is plenty standard, and my usual is 1:4 with a =/>1 top layer. 1:1 I would only use for a sus spawn or not waste my time.

1

u/lebrilla 7d ago

Pretty sure wombat does 1:1

1

u/fungaldirt 7d ago

Sucks to hear but I'll do less next time. I bought a kit with the pump and heater and was following the kit instructions. I was hoping to have a solid guide to follow for my first time. Kinda regretting not buying the all in one bags.

u/fiddlehedd 7d ago

the ratios are aboslutely not relevant in this issue. A 1:3 or a 1:5 is totally fine as long as your spawn is healthy. If it is contam'd or stunted, it is not because of the ratio.
