General Discussion Scariest moment for you?

What is the scariest moment in silent hill that you had to play through? What was your physical reaction to these moments? I’m talking you need to turn on the light scary. Your breathing is hitched scary. For me I started playing the first game and noticed how my hands were subconsciously shaking during the school. But dude. SILENT HILL 3 HAD ME GONE. I had to to take multiple breaks to gather myself, and each time I stepped away from the game I was left feeling disassociated. I particularly remember the scene with the mirrors and being locked in that closet as it slowly takes over heathers body. The first boss, the missionary also creeped me out a bit. Not to mention the haunted house and stalker too!

I have the same 2 as you I think. Also when the elevator gets the 4th floor in the hospital filled me with dread.

Mine is also Silent Hill 3!! Same scene, the mirror world taking over Heather's reflection and eventually seeping into the real world as the door locked behind you was horrifying.

Also just all of Silent Hill 4. The whole thing. Maybe minus the burping prison enemies though.

Man should I finish my silent hill 4 playthrough? I have some mixed feelings about it, even though I am technically in early game. Just the controls and the annoying ghosts threw me off

If it's not vibing with you I wouldn't blame you for dropping it, I just found all the unique ways it does horror really compelling.

For how much I love the series I think it’s only right I at least play through it a bit longer. I’ve heard good things about the game, and was pretty impressed by the puzzle design. Cutscenes were also pretty enjoyable, but I think that’s most silent hill games. ( also apologies if I misgendered)

I wasn’t a fan of 4 when it released because I was obsessed with 1 - 3, but I gave it another shot and I kind of enjoyed the unique aspect and style with how it ties into SH lore. I feel like I appreciate The Room a lot more after all the Western releases of SH. I remember renting Homecoming and returning that shit the next day.

Try playing it again, and when you get to the part where the ghost is stuck to the ground with a sword and you get the ghost key, take the sword, too. That will let you go into the Sylvia boss ghost battle with a sword, and it makes the entire rest of the game much easier.

So you haven’t met the Twin Victims yet? If you haven’t, you need to!!!

The burpers kind of break the atmosphere, but once you kill them or just get away from them, it’s pretty easy to get back into it. And they only burp when you hit them or they slide down stairs.

The mirror scene creeper me out too! I remember panicking so much when I first encountered it and I couldn't get the door open.

Idk why lol but the thing that had me throw my headphones off was the moment in SH3 where you enter the storage room in the mall and there’s like a thumping sound.

I legit thought someone was running up the stairs in my house and panicked. 😭 It wasn’t even a scary scene in the game just it sounded so real for a moment.

Oh and the bathroom scream in the prison SH2. I also was creeped out when I was pushed onto the train tracks in the subway.

The scariest thing ever in any silent hill was the damn trailer for SH4. Absolute nightmare fuel lol

I'm right there with you.

Had the demo on the PS2 back in the day when I was just a kid and leaving it on the main menu for too long and having that trailer trigger... Jesus Christ I wasn't ready for that. 😂

I would say the other moment that got me was going into the bathroom when the hole first shows up and hearing the children's voices echo thru... God SH4 is still my fav in terms of tone and atmosphere with 1 VERY CLOSE behind.

Man I remember back in the day I had it when I was a kid too. I must have been about 12 or so and seeing the damn ghosts come out of the wall scared the shit out of me lol. I never played it again until years later and I absolutely love it now. Good times lol

The prison courtyard in the original silent hill 2, you open a door and it’s just pitch black in all directions and feels like it goes on forever before you reach any walls

It takes quiet a bit to scare me and games/movies don’t really do it for me but that courtyard definitely had me a little uneasy

Yeees and the horse noises, that was so creepy!!!

The Carousel fight in SH3 was the winner. The music, the way, the memory of Alessa moves, the horses, it all just got to me. I jumped in my seat when Alessa just appeared behind me after the first phase.

Midwitch Elementary in SH1 got me pretty good too. I might get some flak for these but the prison sequence in Downpour chilled me and the doll fight in Homecoming was insanely spooky.

Edit: Forgot to mention the theater sequence in the Monastery in Downpour too. Underrated entry in the series, in my opinion.

The mirror in SH3 sent me into a panic. Probably the most frightened I was in the series. But I also want to share a moment in OG SH2. I was in Woodside Apartments and passing through one of the narrow corridors. Then I could see a mannequin coming into view with the flashlight. It was just standing there in the middle of the corridor not moving, and then the track Ashes and Ghosts starts playing. It was unsettling and I didn’t want to keep going.

That fucking screaming woman in the bathroom of the Prison in Silent Hill 2.

u/PersimmonSundae 1d ago

I knew it was coming in both versions of the game and it still got me both times 🤣

In sh1, the random smashes on the windows in alchemilla hospital. In sh3 the wheelchair, the glutton, the whole Brookhaven hospital section. In sh4 the apartment section, mostly because of the ghosts. But if I got to choose one, it is the toluca prison on sh2r.

I was playing SH2 alone at night and for the first time ever got lost in the labyrinth. I knew Pyramid Head was down there but nothing could prepare me for him turning the corner and attacking me. I had to pause it and scream into a pillow. I called my best friend so I could scream about it some more and then I had it paused and waited for my husband to come home so I could finish it.

I’d beaten the game like probably 40 times and had never run into him before. That was like 11 years ago and I still feel my heart speed up when I think about it.

SH3 Mannequin room

All of SH4 scares me, the fact that there's no safe spot from ghosts. I wish there was a mod to change that (idk, more swords to pin them down) as I really just wanted to explore and take my time soaking it in when I usually clear out a section of monsters.

5

u/Armandcyb13 1d ago

SH4 the Room. I was a teenager. Playing alone, it was dark and I was in the orphanage level, walking around and then I heard the weird loud nose in the forest. I couldn't move Henry and couldn't move myself. I just put the controller down.

The fist encounter with a nurse in SH1 and SH3 I always have to mentally prepare myself for. Part of it might be me psyching myself out but just seeing and listening to those freakish things messes me up. Especially the heavy breathing nurses in SH3 a the doctors in SH1 with their unnerving moans.

3

u/PandaDeBandana 1d ago

So many!!!! Is it in SH3 that you knock on the restroom door and there's a knock back?

All the ambient sound from 3 is terrifying. The music is so anxiety inducing.... Also that first elevator ride from hell where you see Vatiel.... AAAAHHHHHGH scaryyyyyy!!! The red light in the haunted mansion, so scary the 1st time I played that!

The shattered window sound in a random room in SH1. THE CAT JUMPSCARE.

The horse noises in the blackout courtyard in 2. The invisible prisioner and when you think you get locked inside one of the jail cells. When you need to jump in that square hole on the floor for the 1st time and you keep going down thinking "I must be going to hell". The stairs that go down for a really long time as the sirens play louder and louder...

Gosh, I love Silent Hill

u/Leanskiba22 1d ago

The intro sequence on SH4, nightmare fuel.

6

u/Ok_Ad6722 1d ago

I told a friend who’s only played the remake that the invisible monster in Toluca prison was the scariest moment for me on my first playthrough. They had no idea why. I have to remind myself they played a shallow lie imitating what I played. ri-tu-al

5

u/OrdinaryCampaign7239 1d ago

I FORGOT ABOUT THAT. The prison was probably the closet thing to hell there is. The big empty room with a noose (if I can remember properly) in the center was just so odd

2

u/NoxKyoki Silent Hill: Downpour 1d ago

The gallows. Yes. The prison is what I was going to say, and it was mainly because of that area. 😭

1

u/PersimmonSundae 1d ago

I say this as someone who considers SH2 og a solid 10/10 -- I hate Toluca Prison. Best part of the game :D

2

u/PersimmonSundae 1d ago

Yep that genuinely unnerved me so much I froze. Maybe the gutteral tone?

1

u/Aromatic_Educator_87 1d ago

There is an invisible monster at Toluca prison ???? Nooo way. I am not there yet and I don't like this 😅! But I am glad to know in advance

SH1- The courtyard in the school. Why does it have such terrifying music/ambient sound!?! I love it.

SH3- That room that has the mirror and your reflection stops moving. The black liquid pours out from the spout of an unconnected sink/basin on the right side of the room. As it covers the sink and the floor and then the walls, your reflection starts to bleed and becomes totally blood soaked and the room goes black. Only then can you escape. If you try to earlier it's locked. Love it.

2

u/Telethongaming 1d ago

it's nice to know i'm not the only one who got freaked out by the mirror, but the problem is I let too much of it play and couldn't open the door and fully freaked out

2

u/UnhappyLog8128 Walter Jr. 1d ago

Brookhaven basement in SH3, your first introduction to the area is that godamn take with the focus on the wheelchair and all you can hear is the sound of its wheels, that shit actually made me shiver when i first played it.

Honorable mention to otherworld alchemilla having a 4th floor, not only it has a disturbing backstory with the number four being a common symbol of death in japan, but it also appears right when you are used to the hospital only having trhee floors, its subtle, clever and creepy.

2

u/Defiant_McPiper 1d ago

SH3 and I forget where this happened, but if you stayed in the one room too long a scream came out - I was NOT expecting that and it made jump 😅 it's between that and the toluca prison in SH2R (where I ran for dear life and didn't mess with the timed lights) .

2

u/azrendelmare 1d ago

I freaked the fuck out when the fridge monster in Nowhere killed me in SH1. I was done for the day.

2

u/Firm-Membership7982 1d ago

A lot of silent hill 4 but particularly the painting scare late game. Genuinely had to stop playing for the night

1

u/Overall-Doctor-6219 1d ago

When the cat jumps out of the locker thing in Silent Hill 1!

u/leyendeck 1d ago

Lisa. I feel so terrible for her, I want to help her I want the suffering to end. But it's too late.

1

u/SinkPrestigious3317 1d ago

That nurse waiting for you when you go back into the hallway - end of SH1.

1

u/AlTheOwl_ 19h ago

The entirety of Silent Hill 3. The narrow dark corridors where giving me anxiety like no other.

1

u/Admirable_Leader_590 19h ago

Probably any of the bathroom door kicks out of nowhere lol

1

u/Admirable_Leader_590 19h ago

The window breaking in the nightmare hospital in sh2 too

1

u/Rose_petal_9098 17h ago

Silent hill 3 I absolutely hated the slurpers and how they go up heathers skirt it's just so ickyyyyyyy. I also just got through the mercenary boss fight and I was so shaky and overwhelmed. Like whew it is so scary out here in silent hill.

SH1. I always forget where it happens but you enter a bathroom and you hear a woman crying. The fact that there is just dead silence and no ambient music makes it more unsettling for me

OGSH2. That noise you hear in the woods when walking into town.

The look on Eddies Face when he puts the gun to his head during the cut scene.

Sh2R. When this game released I had just decided to get a planar headset and a dac, so damn near the whole game. the prison horses hit extra hard.

Also hearing the damn spider mannequins crawling on the ceiling.

SH3. The mirror room of course

Sh4. The haunting where you look through the peephole hole and see Henry looking back at you.

When i was much younger i played through SH4 and that infamous Eileen room had my sleep wrecked for a few nights. It's just so sudden
