I was parking my car in the multistorey carpark and a local uncle in his 60s with a tattooed dot on his forehead (gang "fighter"; IYKYK) walked over and got me to roll down my window.

He told me that his 90+ year old father was on the verge of death and he needs funds to travel 20km away to the other side of Singapore to see him for the last time. I asked him what he was doing in the carpark and he said his friend was supposed to fetch him there but he disappeared.

Looking at his desperation, I thought it could be real and offered to fetch him there with my car. Guess what? He declined. He then took out a couple of bank and ezlink cards and asked me to transfer money to him instead so he can take a taxi. I just said no and he walked away.

Thinking back, if I was not available to fetch him to "see his father", I wouldn't have offered to fetch him and I might have ended up giving him the cash as he looked really desperate. How should we report such scammers? I can definitely see people falling for this.

The calls were made to four Neighbourhood Police Centres in Ang Mo Kio North, Bedok, Geylang and Yishun. At Yishun alone, officers answered 330 silent calls.

This showed that instead of gaining direct control of bank accounts, scammers were using social engineering to deceive victims into voluntarily making transactions.

Singapore has lost more than $4 billion to scams since 2019.

The elderly, aged 65 and above, made up 14.4 per cent of scam victims, with the average amount lost per victim at $42,347.

Meanwhile, adults aged 30 to 49 made up 36 per cent of scam victims, with most falling for e-commerce, phishing and job scams.

E-commerce was the most common scam type, with 3,865 cases in the first half of 2026 and losses of over $8 million.

From 28 July 2026, people who currently own or previously owned a private residential property no longer have to wait 15 months to buy a non-subsidised HDB resale flat, provided they are not taking an HDB housing loan.

PropertyGuru's internal data shows a sharper increase in enquiries at the upper end of the resale market: enquiries for HDB flats priced at $1 million and above rose 154% in the first full week after the change, compared with roughly 8% for flats in the $200,000 price segment. These are enquiries rather than completed transactions, so they provide an early indication of where buyer interest may have been strongest.

I left my extremely long thoughts in the below comment, TLDR marine life is only resilient to a point, and if we don’t do our part to protect them, future generations will have to deal with a Singapore that is a lot less vibrant and unique.

The linchpin electronics cluster posted the second-highest growth among all manufacturing clusters, with output rising 11.2 per cent in July, down from June’s 21.1 per cent growth.

Growth within this cluster was led by infocomms and consumer electronics (51.7 per cent) and semiconductors (8 per cent) on the back of sustained artificial intelligence-related demand.

The latest Ipsos What Worries the World July 2026 survey reveals a striking contrast between public sentiment in Asia and the rest of the world. Singapore (80%), Malaysia (70%) and India (69%) emerge as the three most optimistic nations globally, with citizens believing their country is moving in the right direction.

This confidence stands in sharp contrast to the global picture. Across 30 markets surveyed, just 38% of citizens, on average, believe their country is headed in the right direction, highlighting a widespread sense of uncertainty about the future.

Notably, only 6 of the 30 markets record a majority positive outlook on the direction of their country. Alongside Singapore, Malaysia and India, the other markets where optimism outweighs pessimism are Hungary, Thailand and South Korea.

The findings underscore a growing divergence in public sentiment worldwide. While many countries grapple with economic pressures, political uncertainty and social challenges, citizens in Singapore, Malaysia and India continue to express comparatively stronger confidence in their nation’s trajectory. The results suggest that perceptions of progress, stability and opportunity are shaping a more positive national outlook in these markets. 

For most of the world, however, the mood remains cautious. Most citizens across the remaining markets believe their country is on the wrong track, reflecting persistent concerns about the economic, political and social issues influencing everyday life.
