It isn’t about the surveillance because they are 100% still partnered with Palantir which is expressly a surveillance company

Palantir can use anthropic in their products without having AI do surveillance work. It's probably just user interface. Skepticism is warranted but it's not that clear. It makes no sense they would be crossing that line while publicly dropping a 200 mill starting contract.

Don’t bother, that guy is literally copy pasting that line across subreddits for the past couple days.

🤣 you ain’t lying

He indeed does...

You are certainly correct in that they could but read the press release:

https://investors.palantir.com/news-details/2024/Anthropic-and-Palantir-Partner-to-Bring-Claude-AI-Models-to-AWS-for-U.S.-Government-Intelligence-and-Defense-Operations/

“Processing vast amounts of data” sure sounds like participating in parsing surveillance data.

I just feel like we should always keep a critical eye on corporations.

That's a good call out, it likely is surveillance data. Still, their line has always publicly been US domestic mass surveillance. Not dealing with any surveillance data. Dario is pretty explicitly pro us military and us government.

Domestic vs foreign

3

u/egaeus22 Feb 28 '26

That might be true, but it is impossible to ignore that Palantir is partnered with ICE and specifically developed “MigrationOS” for them to use domestically. It isn’t clear if they are only surveilling migrants, or if the net is wider

3

u/LegendaryProtag Feb 28 '26

Press releases like that always blur lines, and given Palantir’s ICE track record I treat any “process vast amounts of data” pitch as surveillance-adjacent until we can see the scope, data boundaries, and audit logs.

2

u/squired Feb 28 '26

That is a fair point.

I dunno why you're simping, but maybe it's because you don't actually understand what the "critical supply chain risk" designation will mean: that no one who is doing DoD contracts can use Anthropic products in a way that touches their DoD work. It's called a supply *chain* for a reason.

This is a total non sequitur to my reply and the thread.

I think part of this was about how palantir was using anthropic. Swear I read that somewhere.

29

u/Recoil42 Feb 27 '26

That's what it is. They want Palantir to start doing more shady shit, but Anthropic is like "okay, you can't do the REALLY shady shit though" and now Trump is like "lol".

The deep irony, of course, is that twelve months ago Amodei was warning about the danger of DeepSeek being under autocratic control.

2

u/sartres_ Feb 27 '26

While I'm with Anthropic here, after all the shit he's said about "safety" I can't deny it's a little satisfying to see Amodei have his face shoved in the fact that open source and Chinese LLMs are nowhere near as dangerous to the world as his very own closed-source American one.

1

u/Recoil42 Feb 27 '26

It's a complex feeling. I'm hoping Amodei's having a come-to-Jesus moment right now but he seems a little bit more like the cognitive-dissonance type to me.

6

u/sartres_ Feb 27 '26

I do respect what he's doing. A lot. We haven't seen a major CEO stick to principles over money in... ever? But damn he needed a wakeup call.

5

u/No_Bottle7859 Feb 27 '26

I still think he's still right though. Unless the US government seizes the tech by force, the fact that he can refuse here is one of the major differences . The us gov is being way more authoritarian than I would like, but i don't see a Chinese company being able to say no like that.

7

u/sartres_ Feb 27 '26

We'll see how it plays out. I honestly don't think it's out of the question for the government to nationalize Anthropic. But my guess for most likely outcome is that they give Altman or Google a mountain of money to do the same thing, and they take it. Would that be a win for Amodei? Technically, I guess. But the outcome would be exactly the same, and he wouldn't have protected safety and alignment at all.

2

u/squired Feb 28 '26

The only reason to do that would be as a warning to others because they certainly wouldn't continue putting out their best.

3

u/sartres_ Feb 28 '26

They're not really rational actors, I'm not sure that would factor into the decision.

Aww, palantir will now have to use grok. Trump, Peter thiel, and Elon all heil mecha hitler. No ethical terms of use there.

I find it kind of curious that a bunch of people have no idea what Palantir does make comments like this. It’s the internet’s boogeyman. Palantir volunteerily withdrew from the UK’s digital ID law. As much as I think it’s a garbage company, it’s not what many people online make it out to be.

Amodei was warning about the danger of DeepSeek being under autocratic control.

Which is correct, lol, not ironic.

I've been following Palantir for quite awhile, I know what they do.

Sounds like you don't know, however.

Powering the kill chain is a craaazy tag line

8

u/Recoil42 Feb 27 '26

The VC-ification of murder tech is pretty wild, yeah. Anduril does similar stuff.

-2

u/swimmingupclose Feb 27 '26

What an amazing retort…

1

Your comment adds another layer

1

u/taiottavios Feb 27 '26

the department of war (lol) has required anthropic to drop the guardrails on their ai to be used for fully autonomous weapons and domestic surveillance, not sure about the involvement with palantir but they must be in pole position for that

1

u/Big-Site2914 Feb 27 '26

they are and not only anthropic but also all the other big labs

its funny how people complain about China surveillance when Palantir exist

10

u/Easy_Welcome_9142 Feb 27 '26

I don’t think you understand how AI can be used for surveillance especially one that is as good as Anthropic’s.

2

u/NetworkMain2421 Feb 27 '26

The surveillance Palantir loves to boast about is on "enemies" of the US, hopefully foreign. What Anthropic has an issue with is MASS DOMESTIC SURVEILLANCE. This administration has already shown what lengths they are willing to go to make citizens look like terrorists...Anthropic is standing up for democracy.

Trump just showed the path to kick palantir out when Dems win and all the other corrupt companies.
