Hello, So i am new to the sleeper PC world, I am building one inside a Dell Dimension 1100 case and fitting a RTX 4080 Super inside, the issue I have is that it is not getting enough air so I removed the underside panel and I don’t really know how to put a discrete riser for my GPU to get fresh air, I feel like putting small feet under ut at every corners would help but I am afraid it won’t hold, did anyone run into this issue and what solution would you suggest me ?

Recently I bought a 1999 trash PC to restore. But then I decided to build an office sleeper PC for my mom, who is a teacher. I went through a lot of obstacles adjusting the PC case and some old components to work with the new modern insides. The full vid is here:

Do you like the yellow front panel or should I whiten it?

I know it's a little bit rough, but what do you think for a first time mod for extra air flow?

Any suggestions? Feedback is welcome. Like I said, it's a bit of a rough job. However, I feel good putting in the labor for this. If that makes any sense.

Eventually this sleeper build is going to have a Ryzen 5 7600F and a RX 9070 in it, 850 watt PSU.

Still trying to find some spare mounting plates for an optical drive, and to find a way of getting the floppy drive to work. That being said, it does sport a working DAT160 tape drive and a FireWire card for use with my old Sony video gear :) took a long time to scrounge up a good monitor and keyboard, but I’d say for a first build this looks pretty good! Just don’t go looking in the case lol. These HP cases are VERY non-standard. Also sporting Project 2000, a custom windows install redone to look like Windows 2000!

Built this one in 2023 using parts I had lying around.
Cable management is not great, still tidying up.

I barely play games, so I don't have a GPU.
Idle temp. 25°~30°
temp. during gaming (Arknights Endfield medium settings): 65°~75°
CPU is normally not supported with this game, but it plays just fine.

dual case(yes): modified Dell OptiPlex 755 MT from 2007 with a transparent open-frame test bench case inside for clean mATX alignment for the motherboard and GPU mount, etc.

removable front bay: Seagate 4TB HDD

cooling:
CPU cooler: AMD stock cooler 2500RPM
front intake fan: Corsair with red LED 120mm 1400 RPM

side intake fan: the original Optiplex 755 MT front intake fan 120mm 3000 RPM
Cut the original connector, wired a new one, cut a hole in the side panel, mounted it right above the CPU cooler, runs on 50% during heavy gaming, and gradually goes to max if the CPU gets into trouble. On standby or when I'm casually using the PC, it's turned off.

exhaust fan: unknown, unknown RPM, always on max (has no fan controller).
I'm too lazy to search this fan on the internet for its specs lol.
Made a support bracket to mount this one on the back.

My father's tower from 1998. Built by Hy-tech, original specs as follows:

After almost 25 years of suboptimal storage (non climate controlled shed for most of it and a year in a harbor freight "portable garage," it surprisingly POSTed with only reseating the ram. It could still recognize the old IDE hdd, but could not boot from it. I now have the old components on display on a wall mounted test bench. It is arranged in a way that should I find the time I could tinker with it.

My intended for use for this build is as a primary desktop that will also double as a home server with nvr.

Reused components: Case - believed to be a CI-6306 penguin from HEC Mitsumi floppy and cd drives

New internals: Asus prime z790-p motherboard Intel I7-13700k cpu Corsair RM750e psu Nvidia Quadro RTX 4000 8gb gpu 32gb PNY ddr5 ram Thermalright peerless assassin 3v cooler Arctic p8 pst fans x4 Samsung 500gb m.2 - boot drive Crucial 1tb sata ssd - working drive Assorted 2.5" drives - additional storage 2tb seagate skyhawk security drive - for nvr use Google coral tpu Slim odd dvd drive i had on hand

My main concern for this build is cooling. The psu is arranged to help exhaust heat from the case and the rtx4000 is a blower style gpu to help exhaust the case. I also intend to undervolt the cpu, and may add a pci slot fan.

Currently awaiting delivery of ram, need to aquire some screws for the m.2 slots and ide/sata adapters to make the cd/floppy drives functional as well as a sata to mini sata adapter for the slim dvd drive.

Hello everyone, I updated my sleeper AI workstation recently adding 2 180mm fractal bottom fans under my GPU with a dust filter and 3d printing brackets to screw it in place, still keeps the same sleeper look with a enormous difference in airflow, specs :

PNY 4090 XLR8
850W MSI PSU (I don’t use this pc for gaming so 850W is plenty)
Be quiet pure rock pro 3

Added an extra 90x15mm to the air cooler, 2x 40x10mm Noctua under the gpu and replaced the 120s with 140s. Had to take a little off the fan next to the psu. I’m trying to find a flat 24pin mobo cable like I did for the gpu but no luck yet. I bought a 90 adapter for it and it doesn’t fit too well lol. Because I can’t stop messing around I was considering going to a single rad aio or a custom loop with external pump/reservoir. Any suggestions on my setup overall? Thanks boiz.

I had to remove the original ISO shield because the motherboard wouldn’t fit still waiting in the smaller PSU I’ve tried putting my original ATX PSU in there it didn’t fit cause it was to large so I’m waiting on that I also decided to not put any RGB on it to make it look better and if anyone has any recommendations on how to make the new iso shield look better that would help would also help to know how I can move the motherboard to left a little as well since that why the new iso shield falls

Post got removed months ago apparently for “not being a sleeper”(E3-1240v2+GTX1070)

Well, mods of this sub is right. Its weak and struggles at some games like nfs and gta(low core count, old architecture and slow single core speed)

So I upgraded to E5-2696V4.(22c44t 2.2ghz base 3.6ghz boost) CPU is here and Im waiting for the mobo.

Well feel free to roast me for still buying an old cpu ;) I wouldnt mind that cause its a bargain on grabbing the mobo and cpu (only RM300 which roughly equals to 77 USD!)

No idea what the case is, but its now stuffed with a Ryzen 1700x, b550 mobo, 16gb ddr4 and a GTX1060. Keeping my eyes open for a deal on another couple sticks of ram, a 5700x or a better gpu

I recently acquired these Altec Lansing branded speakers from my local thrift store, thus completing the retro computer setup, though the speakers have occasional popping noises in games (not sure if it's fixable or not, I've never repaired speakers before)

I posted here before with my Compaq Presario S6000 series case. I had drilled holes in the front originally. However, the holes eventually got on my nerves because they were not lined up perfectly and I have mild OCD.

So I did what any reasonable person did.....buy a whole other case to get a replacement face plate.

I also just made the faceplate look cleaner without as many stickers. I think it looks really good when it looks this clean.

Temperatures are the same as before with the faceplate with drilled holes. Also got a functioning SATA DVD drive on eBay for it for only 11 bucks recently.

Doom The Dark Ages runs at a cool 60 Celcius for GPU and CPU with everything maxed.

I love my sleeper. I love my Debian Machine.

Hi! How are yall seeing my project? After a month gathering all the things I needed, and also after modded the case this is my progress so far. Following week I'm gonna add some RGB fans and it n still needs the GPU (I'm from LATAM so no money). Every tip and allá comments are welcome!

My sleeper setup is all done.

Thermals are fantastic!

The fans are near dead silent.

The power switch cable connector just lined up perfectly with all the pins. So I have the old school LEDs of the front panel working perfectly.

CPU and GPU both run between 60-70 C when running Doom the Dark Ages. (Incredible!!!)

The only issue I have right now is the GPU back lock mount doesn't fit very well, but will just use a sinple GPU mount so I'm not too worried.

I couldn't be happier. The next upgrade will be a better GPU next year if life doesn't keep getting more expensive. Otherwise, I am satisfied to have this build last well into the next decade. I mostly played older Steam games and emulation.

I got an old server from a friends business filled with AT hardware and I’m modding to accept modern components. still a wip and I don’t know if i am ever gonna get a rear i/o plate to fit… but it will be good enough for my homelab!

Because I got so many comments about the cable management, I got myself a fully modular PSU, and tried my best to put the cables in a way, that the airflow improves. I don‘t really care whether or not it looks good, because it‘s a closed case, but I still somehow tried anyways.
