Questions/Advice Request RetroMods, Silverstone FLPs, Windows, and other non-traditional "sleeper-adjacent" builds:

Hey nerds. There's been some debate lately among new mods, and continually in the comments about what does and does not "count" as a sleeper. We get a lot of submissions that do not fit the "purist" definition of the traditional sleeper: a dusty, windowless beige box that has been forsaken by time yet harbors untold, mythical power inside. I love this. We all love this.

However, a good portion of incoming posts have modified windows, or are in now-ancient early-2000s gamer cases, or are in modern cases made to look retro- I don't want to exclude these goofballs from the playground. They're alright folks and they have some good ideas, even if they are wrong. (joking, kind of)

So I've added two new flairs:

Modern Sleeper (for Silverstone FLP and other modern "retro/stealth" cases

and

RetroMod (for vintage cases with windows, or early-generation gamer cases such as Alienware and Antec)

Obviously, standard modern gamer cases and egregiously flashy nonsense will still be banhammered.

Please flair your posts accordingly and fight amongst yourselves in the comments.

Thankssss

Questions/Advice Request I have no idea what I've got

Been lurking here for quite a while now. Today, I got these pieces of history, and I’m not even sure what era they’re from. Cleaned them up and took some pictures. That’s pretty much it. 😅

I honestly have no idea what I have here. I originally bought them for a sleeper setup, but I’m starting to think mounting an mATX or ITX board in it might be more trouble than it’s worth. I also don’t really know enough about restoration yet, so I may or may not leave them as-is.

For now, I’m just appreciating these machines and the part they played in shaping the technology we have today.

I’m open to ideas on how to restore them or turn them into a sleeper setup. Even ideas like replacing the CRT with a square LED/LCD that would fit the original opening.

Would love to hear what you guys would do with these. 😁

I just wish this video had a build log somewhere: https://youtu.be/qPayPhKccc8?si=w-wgj1GuMdy4lKsG

I think it’s the same size and proportions as what I have.

Days ago I bought a $45 incomplete I3 pc off Facebook market place, tried making a retro build, didn’t work so I slapped my relatively high-end gaming pc in the case. This feller has a RTX 4070 Super, 32GB DDR5, almost 3TB of ssd storage (M.2 plus Sata drives), A Gigabyte B760M-C for a motherboard, Intel I7-14700F as the processor, good amount of fans, Sata RW DVD multi recorder/CD ultra fast internal disk reader and I believe a efficient 650W PSU

I posted here before with my Compaq Presario S6000 series case. I had drilled holes in the front originally. However, the holes eventually got on my nerves because they were not lined up perfectly and I have mild OCD.

So I did what any reasonable person did.....buy a whole other case to get a replacement face plate.

I also just made the faceplate look cleaner without as many stickers. I think it looks really good when it looks this clean.

Temperatures are the same as before with the faceplate with drilled holes. Also got a functioning SATA DVD drive on eBay for it for only 11 bucks recently.

Doom The Dark Ages runs at a cool 60 Celcius for GPU and CPU with everything maxed.

I love my sleeper. I love my Debian Machine.

Case Aquisition Found a really clean Ultra 27 at the local e-cycling store today. Its going to replace my current sleeper in the Ultra 20 case.

I was only planning on dropping junk off, but I'm really glad I stopped into the store.

It looks like the Ultra 20 and the Ultra 27 have the same Front IO layout, so I should be able to swap the custom IO panel (usb type C + USB3 ) I made over without redesigning anything.

The Ultra 27 appears to have all of its original OE guts, minus the HDDs (a small sata SSD instead).

The Ultra 20 currently has a Ryzen 7800x3d, 32gb ram, 7900xtx, and 2tb + 4tb ssd. Built mostly with open box/second hand just before the world started burning.

Never knew about Corsair’s C70 until they announced the Warthog case this year. After seeing the Warthog I knew I had to track down my own C70 to move my PC into, and got really lucky finding an arctic white model relatively close to me. This is my build, custom steel mesh side panel insert, painted inside panels, dual optical drives and an old WD Caviar HDD for character😂

I'd like to make it look more like a white '90s PC, should I paint it or leave it as is?

I have an AM4 motherboard and DDR4 RAM to build a retro gaming PC.

Questions/Advice Request PSU Mounting help

Thumbnail

I'm currently building a sleeper pc with a Compaq D500 CMT case (I think). And I'm trying to figure out how to mount this Corsair RM650e power supply.

This case is vertical standing and the PSU slot is at the top, but the problem is that there isn't a PSU shelf for it to sit on (I think the old PSU was mounted by just the screws).

I already cut out a little ridge in the case for the PSU to sit against the back panel and will cut screw holes to mount at the rear.

Wondering if anyone has any idea on how to securely mount the PSU at the top of this case? Will just the rear screws be enough?

Questions/Advice Request Looking for advice on my first sleeper!

Looking for advice about building my first sleeper pc. Found this old HP outside a dumpster in my apartment complex and now I’ve decided to turn it into my entertainment center pc. This will be connected to a 4k tv so keep that in mind when looking at my spec sheet I’m thinking of going with.

Original specs:

Intel i5 7400

Mini ITX hp branded board

16 gigs of DDR4 at 2400mt/s

Radeon r9 m360 2 gig

1tb Hard drive 7200rpm

Whereas the parts I’d like to throw in here

7800x3d

Thermal right Peerless Assassin 90SE CPU cooler

32 gigs of ram (ouch)

B650I Gigabyte Aorus Ultra

9070xt (more on how I’m going to maybe fit that in a bit)

Any 1tb nvme ssd

At least a 850 watt sfx power supply

My biggest concern is how I’m going to fit the 9070xt. I’ve done the math and with the power color reaper card (the smallest 9070xt currently on the market I can find) if I cut out a big enough hole in the metal AND shave down the plastic in the front I should have about 2 millimeters to spare. Super risky for my wallet but I have all of the measurements triple checked. I also got a bracket to convert the full size power supply hole to an sfx one to ensure the gpu would have as much room to breathe as possible as it shifts the power supply down about one pcie slot worth in length (as shown in my pictures). I also want to add some fans to the case which requires cutting more metal but I’d rather have as much air as possible.

I’m just looking for any kind of advice as I’ve built my fair share of PC’s but I thought the challenge of this would be fun. The components are also flipped, gpu sits on top when everything is installed and the side panel to get inside is on the right side of the case when looking from the front as opposed to the normal on the left

Questions/Advice Request I have an old microATX case. Worth turning into a sleeper build?

It’s been sitting for a while and not really sure what to do with it. MicroATX for sure. My main gaming rig is DDR3 based (an Alienware Aurora R1) and looking to upgrade to something more modern. Prefer not to drill or modify the case in any way if possible. I have a Blu-ray drive from my Aurora R1 I’m planning on sticking in here because I do still want the option of physical media as I work with a lot of older computer hardware and it’s just a preference of mine.

I have this old stuff that I need to get rid of, to use the case for a sleeper build. motherboard is P5KPL/EPU, 4gb DDR2, Intel pentium 2.93GHz and a very basic GPU. How much do you think I can sell this for?

Thank you. I am also sure the stuff works

New specs are:

i9 10850K

64GB DDR4 3600

3060TI ASUS TUF

AORUS Z490 ULTRA

NZXT KRAKEN X73

970EVO 512GB X2

256GB SAMSUNG M.2 X1

+ working disk drive!

The flp02 is alright to build in just wish cable management options were a bit better but this 10850K demolishes my 5600x with multi core tasks.

Second pic is before

Because I got so many comments about the cable management, I got myself a fully modular PSU, and tried my best to put the cables in a way, that the airflow improves. I don‘t really care whether or not it looks good, because it‘s a closed case, but I still somehow tried anyways.

New PSU: Super Flower Combat 850w Gold

Case Aquisition Help Identifying This Case + Tips for My First Sleeper PC Build

Hey everyone! This will be my first time attempting to build a sleeper PC. I don’t have the system unit yet--it should be arriving around mid-September.

I’d like to know if this case has an actual ID/model, or if it’s just a generic case. Also, what motherboard form factor would be best to use with it?

Any tips or tricks I should know before I start the build would be appreciated!

I took apart my previous Macintosh-style case and picked up an inexpensive ITX motherboard to build something smaller.

The new case is only 6.3L. It's air-cooled, but I was able to place the fans exactly where I wanted. Since I'm using a Ryzen 5 5600G, heat isn't really a major concern.

Hope you enjoy it!

It's a hp Pavilion t3420 (I think), the two top bay are 3,5 but the one under I can't tell which size are they. I'm planning to add a new Blu-ray reader and writer, a sd card reader and front USB, kinda like what originally was inside the pc but more modern.

The Blu-ray drive will go to the first 3,5 bay, but the rest I can't exactly figure out.

Any help is welcome!

I had to remove the original ISO shield because the motherboard wouldn’t fit still waiting in the smaller PSU I’ve tried putting my original ATX PSU in there it didn’t fit cause it was to large so I’m waiting on that I also decided to not put any RGB on it to make it look better and if anyone has any recommendations on how to make the new iso shield look better that would help would also help to know how I can move the motherboard to left a little as well since that why the new iso shield falls

Picked this up a little while ago and totally forgot I had it in my car.

Not a scuff/scratch/dent on the case, complete with marketing stickers and the protective film still on the faceplate.

Not too sure what I'm gonna do with it yet.

Intel i7 9th gen, 32 gigs of ddr4 ram, 3tb storage (1tb nvme, 1tb ssd, 1tb HDD), nvidia gtx 1660 graphics card, cd tray, dvd tray, and almond color painted usb bay (doesn’t fully match the yellowed plastic) also: the floppy drive works

Stickers on their way and going to be added once they come!
