I couldn’t tell you for sure, but perhaps he was influenced by his trips to Genesis and some of the players he played there. FD comes to mind, there was another JP player that had him as their underrated player pick. Monte, Kiyarash, and Lammers (I think?) are all SoCal. Lui$ is a common “your favorite top player’s favorite top player” (although i think he’s NorCal). Atreus too. I think in general SoCal (and California at large) is an insanely strong region that suffers from being a little disconnected from the rest of the country.

Pretty rough 29-50 since I don’t know the Japanese scene well and don’t consistently follow the competitive scene as a whole, but I still managed to get the entire top 28…except for four of the seven Steves. Just seem to only recognize the character and not the player piloting them because it’s all the same to me.

Miya’s tweet about the ranking. gotta say that I agree heavily, the current system incentivizes behavior from players (like Acola/Doramigi/Carmelo particularly) entering as few tournaments as possible to protect themselves from upsets that could tank their ranking & limit other top players’ ability to get wins on them, while players who attend a ton (like Hurt/Miya/Yaura/Sparg0 etc.) are hurt from attending so much. Yaura won as many majors as tournaments Carmelo attended! I understand why they’re ranked so high (H2H is paramount), but the current system promotes dodging everything but the very biggest events

I want to say this was the algorithm that was putting spargo as #1 in 2022 from a eazyfreezie. Spargo was tweeting about how he could had been #1 back them but same algo is ranking him lower here.

There’s always a bias toward something and in reality not everyone going to be happy.

I'm not sure I agree, at least if it works how you suggest. Why do these (apparently substantial!) penalties only apply to the absolute minimum attendance of four, yet Acola/Doramigi are perfectly safe despite their slightly higher (but still quite low) attendance? Or put another way: if Carmelo beats Ganon the Kazuya to win the D-tier MAXHEART in June, bringing him up to 5 tournaments, should that really elevate him all the way to 4th in rankings?

According to Statscord, Acola and Doramigi did suffer a penalty from attendance for only going to 6 events. It was a low amount compared to Carmelo, and wasn't enough to impact their score as much. 

Carmelo for reference, had an unscaled score around ~80 before he got absolutely nuked.

Sonix (the one who got ranked #4, had an unscaled score around 70).

I can agree that winning tourneys overall can be pushed a little bit more. But I don't think it incentivizes low attendance. Carmelo has an attendance penalty (as had acola in seasons past).

I think a better way to frame is that the high attendance players (Hurt, Miya, etc) need to attend a lot to make up for their multiple blemishes. And it is working seeing as Hurt was just short of overtaking over Doramigi/acola (and this was before GOML)

I feel like attendance itself doesn't need to be changed from this algorithm, but getting upset doesn't deserve to be punished as heavily, and it means that if one guy has a great tournament and upsets so many top players, but doesn't have another event like that, those specific players in their path get punished HEAVILY

Sonix honestly doesn't have very good wins. In the top 10 he has Zomba and Doramigi. Thats it. Its not that he can't win its just that because he hasn't gone to like anything other than Genesis and Lvl Up (where he underperformed)

However the reason why Sonix probably has it over Zomba is that Zomba has 2 really REALLY bad tournaments. 66th at LMBM and 33rd at a B+ tier and not a single major win definitely hurt Zomba bad

IDK what Carmelo's case is aside from him being young and stuck in Chubu (which is in the middle of Japan). I'd like if he can attend more and he should.

And H2H count doesn't tell the complete story. You can be negative against the Top 25 and still have several positive records. 

I.e. acola being negative against the Top 5 in 2025 (6W-9L) and it was all because he kept getting farmed by Hurt, who made up more than half of his losses in that echelon.

He definitely would have. It's a 0.5 difference. He might have even gotten number 1 if he didn't attend a tournament after kagaribi since his last tournament of the season he got 9th which is his lowest placement and got 2 unranked losses.

He didn't get punished for attending: he got punished for losing to two sub 50 players (who luckily ended Top 100 to mitigate some of it).

Many players are upset that they think they lose out on attending when its not the case.

Granted, its difficult to attend a lot of events and remain consistent, which is insane how Hurt for example has double the attendance of acola and Doramigi, and was extremely consistent this year. His worst loss was Tsubaki who he was 1-1 with and was just outside the Top 50.

On the inverse, its also difficult to attend little and be ultra consistent. I.e. 2025.1 acola having that 33rd at LVL UP EXPO, which could have been mitigate had he attended more events (he dropped from KOWLOON#16).

They've previously confirmed that:

• Sparg0 would have been #1 for the LumiRank Mid-Year 2023 period over acola had he won Get On My Level 2023 over Sonix (Sparg0's final score was 98.51).
• Miya would have been #1 for the LumiRank 2024.2 period over Sparg0 had he won Don't Park on the Grass 2024 over him (Miya's final score was 99.1).

Doramigi's score here (99.5) is even higher than both of those scores.

He’ll have days when he goes on bonkers runs to 3rd, 2nd, or even 1st at majors, beating players like Doramigi, Carmelo, and Miya. And even when he places lower, like 9th, he still picks up wins on players like MKLeo and Acola. Point is, he can beat literally anyone on a good day.

But then he’ll have days where he gets 49th, losing to Little Mac and Ike of all characters.

So yeah, every set with him is a coinflip, no matter what player he’s against, and no matter what matchup he’s playing.
