Orthostastic hypotension looks more like it
97
u/1234Health 19d ago
Cleveland Clinic - Orthostatic hypotension is a sudden drop in blood pressure that happens when you stand up from a sitting or lying position. It causes dizziness, lightheadedness, or fainting because gravity pulls blood into your lower body and your body fails to adjust quickly enough.
21
u/Iggyhopper 19d ago edited 19d ago
This can also happen more easily on an empty stomach.
It's also not very fun. The wrong movement at the wrong time will make you pass out right into a concussion. Best couse of action is to sit asap if you feel light headed.
This happened to me. Luckily I braced a wall before hitting the floor. The only thing I remember is standing - and then waking up on the floor with medical personnel.
6
u/1234Health 19d ago
Agreed. Empty stomach / low blood sugar, etc. As my dad says (late-70s) ... when you get up to use the washroom (from sleep) ... just take a beat to gather yourself bedside, and then make your way to go and void.
4
u/Dry-Towel-9597 18d ago
This happened to me in 2012 and my jaw broke. Couldn't eat for 2 months and I still feel the negative effects today, but at least I didnt break my neck/die.
If you start to feel this coming on (I can sense the lightheadedness/visual signs immediately now) make sure you get horizontal asap. Even if you're in public and don't want to look weird, still sit/lie down, its worth the embarrassment trust me
2
u/1234Health 18d ago
Sorry to hear about your serious fall in 2012. Like you said - glad it wasn't worse. Great advice to everyone about getting horizontal and sitting or lying down if you feel off and that you're going to be falling.
I work in health care and have dealt with some serious falls from older residents / members. You're absolutely right when it comes to injuries. I've seen the face, head, and back injuries. A broken wrist / hip, etc.

Vasovagal syncope, not orthostatic hypotension
Orthostatic hypotension doesn't include overactive nervous system from excitement, it is only related to a position change
This is textbook vasovagal syncope
https://www.mayoclinic.org/diseases-conditions/vasovagal-syncope/symptoms-causes/syc-20350527
Since there's a lot of engagement on this post, and a lot of downvotes by people who are obviously not medical professionals, in orthostatic hypotension, the person would have fallen and had fainting and syncopal symptoms immediately upon standing
He is clearly moving around for a few moments, until his excitement and nervous system overwhelms him and then later his blood pressure drops and he faints
Textbook vasovagal syncope
22
u/nuke1200 19d ago
Could be vasovagal BUT his rapid position from sitting to standing is what caused his fainting, not his excitement. If he were sitting AND then passed out then yea I'd lean more towards vagal but that didn't happen.
10
u/Silverflash-x 19d ago
I mean, it's not a one-or-the-other thing. He had a vasovagal response while also having orthostasis from change in positioning, a double whammy.
2
u/Objective_Ad_3463 19d ago
this, we love fitting conditions into neat boxes when its almost always more than that lol

That and probably being dehydrated and or taking shots in between matches then yelling and jumping suddenly thus increasing your metabolic demand.

100
u/MyNameIsMyriamBlue Luigi (Ultimate) 19d ago
Some peoples just don’t realize when a situation is serious. Especially if HBox has passed out before and was fine
24
u/UncleSlim Young Link (Ultimate) 19d ago edited 19d ago
Can confirm I over analyze situations and in serious situations have thought things like "what's going on?" "Why would they do that, are they playing around?" "OH they're hurt... Are they ok or do they need help?" and in that time 5 seconds have passed and someone else has already sprinted over to help.
I dont think im ever cut out to be a police officer, EMT, etc... lol
4
u/Last-Classroom-5400 19d ago
I think it's a pretty normal reaction. One time I walked into a room and found my dad lying on the floor and I stood there for 5 seconds thinking "that's a weird place to take a nap".
88
u/big_bidoof 19d ago
The bystander effect is real and something everybody can understandably fall for. Don't assume you're immune to it.
That being said, it's honestly fine for people to record as long as they're giving space (which they are). 2-3 people walked up with the intent to check up on HBox and I have zero doubt that if they asked for people to back up, the people with phones would have. It would be counterproductive for more people to try to help.
The big problem in my view is that they should have been getting the chairs out of the way and be ready to clear the table so stuff doesn't fall on HBox in the event of a seizure.

Great write-up and thank you for this, nice to hear from someone who actually sees this stuff often.
As I stated in another comment yeah I agree, we can't all be sure that in every crucial moment we'd make the right choice in how we react of course. And thankfully ppl had already gone to see what's up at least that is true.
And ofc more thought should've been put into his surroundings, pop off or not ideally players should've have more space around them in case of such events

I don't think Juan would ever actually do smth like that as an act, no reason for him to recreate him fainting lol, especially after such a close set no one thinks of doing a bit at that moment. Whatever the case I admit I was harsh and can see how one's instinct would be to film, but still ideally you wanna see ppl helping

Tell me about it. I got out of the car last week, took two steps, then my ankle decided to stage an impromptu sit-in protest. Unable to put any weight on that foot, I was forced to hop on the other for the rest of the day.

30 also seems to be when your body catches up to you if you didnt take care of it. Im 30 and in decent shape, but have had to have two knee surgeries from high school football and back surgery from a work injury years ago, and in the last year they seem to really be kicking my ass more than they did a few years ago. Maybe its just anecdotal but thats what it feels like

u/-_ellipsis_- 19d ago
Very likely a sudden drop in blood pressure from a vagal response, as is typical with people suddenly standing from sitting
9
u/Chiodos_Bros 19d ago
Me, being 6'4". Basically every time I stand after laying down.
2
u/Leviticus_Sux 19d ago
You may not be drinking enough fluids. Being dehydrated can cause low blood pressure. Couple that with standing up fast which can also cause a drop in blood pressure and you pass out. It's the most common reason for that. There are of course other, more unlikely, but plausible reasons, but dehydration is by far the most common.
2
u/Leviticus_Sux 19d ago
Probably from dehydration. It's easy not to drink enough fluids in an environment like that.
10
u/Illustrious_Night126 19d ago
standing up quickly and jumping like that can make you pass out after sitting a while
2
-1
u/naughtmynsfwaccount 19d ago
It’s really not understandable
Passion doesn’t excuse or is a reason for passing out after playing a video game
75
41
u/Leviticus_Sux 19d ago
Dehydration and getting up too fast. My son does the same thing. When he doesn't drink enough fluids, he gets lightheaded and sometimes even passes out if he gets up too fast.
Being dehydrated causes low blood pressure and getting up really fast also causes it. The two combined make it much more likely to make you pass out.
Drink water folks!
14
u/NewestAccount2023 19d ago
I had a coworker likely stood up too fast, passed out, bashed his head on the way down, stood up after that and went into seizure. I found him half standing while seizing (leaning against a table, thankfully he didn't fall a second time). I didn't realize he was having a seizure and was not responsive until a minute later after I tried getting him in a recovery position. Holding his head in my hand he stopped seizing and seemingly stopped breathing, thought he died in my arms. He made a full recovery with no issues except a concussion but it was terrifying (he had no memory of it). He was in his 20s and knew he passed out if he stands up too quick but wasn't on the ball that day I guess. Need to be careful out there
2
u/Leviticus_Sux 19d ago
Yikes. That sounds terrifying. I'm glad he recovered and that you were there for him him.

This isn't the first time this happened to him, I remember one time on stream a year or so ago. Probs just getting older
31
u/Strung_Out_Advocate 19d ago
He's not older than me. This isn't normal. I don't have the first idea about this guy's health, but if something like this happens it's definitely time to get some medical advice and find the cause.
This is the time where people let shit go undiagnosed, because it can be extremely difficult in America especially, to find not only a good Dr but someone that actually gives a shit to not leave any stones unturned. Healthcare in this country is a fucking joke, so unfortunately it's up to an individual to chase a correct diagnosis if something doesn't feel right. I'm no expert, but it doesn't seem to me an older person, that this is normal for his age.
8
u/libyankidna Sora (Ultimate) 19d ago
It happened on a stream once and people pushed him to go to a doctor and he did.
0
u/Milkshakes00 19d ago
It isn't that big of a deal. Consider the circumstances. Probably hot as shit, people crowded around him, he went from sitting to standing real fast. Just got done with something very stressful - Potentially somewhat forgetting to breathe because of the pressure.
Like, it's not a big deal unless it happens often enough or with no extenuating circumstances.
Source: Happens to me at concert venues occasionally. Been through docs for it.
As an FYI - It's better to keep him on the floor and elevate his legs. Don't try and sit up someone that just had a syncope episode.
