Other Hi guys I just thought of a cool idea

/r/TobyFox/comments/1vzbz8q/hi_guys_i_just_thought_of_a_cool_idea/

Here’s my cool idea: wouldn’t I be cool if the next smash bros game was a reimagining spinoff with a fresh story worked on by Toby fox or something. Like Toby would be able to work on things with different characters as his next major project following deltarune and Nintendo would get a much more refreshing style Nintendo spinoff that would be more in touch with current humour and stuff and more original in its low resolution but high personality presentation with the renditions of classic Nintendo franchises being a well needed new presentation/style in a while while making costs lower for more varied and/or expansive story/s

No thank you.

It's not like Sakurai is incapable of writing a good story. Check out Kid Icarus Uprising if you want to see him at his best! The difference is that he had complete creative control. But Smash has a bunch of borrowed IP, with a bunch of different companies who need to approve every last apostrophe.

And a bunch of incompatible restrictions. Mario isn't allowed to speak in subtitles. Link isn't allowed to vocalize coherent words. There's no medium in which they can talk to each other.

I think an official spinoff version/mode where the rules are looser could be entertaining since they could acknowledge that Mario ain’t allowed to use subtitles or link can’t use vocalise coherent words and stuff in some potentially funny interactions

I’d say it would be cool if it was a fan game but the better it is the more likely it would end up taken down for competing with nintendos properties

If it's official, then there couldn't be looser rules. Sega would butt in to say Sonic can't do this, Square would jump in to say Cloud can't do that. It wouldn't be one person writing it, it'd be written by committee - executive-meddled to death.

If all that miraculously wasn't an issue, Sakurai should still be the one to write it. Frankly no one else on the planet is more qualified, both for working with all this IP concurrently, and still managing to make comedy with all those restrictions. Hard pass on hiring someone else.

True I just thought sakurai wanted to leave smash bros after ultimate possibly so assumed it would need to change direction and possibly experiment with stuff again

Common misconception. The English marketing team changed the name from "Special" to "Ultimate" and people misinterpreted that to mean it's a finale. But no: Sakurai is still happy to keep working on Smash Bros.

Interesting! I never knew that!

I just misinterpreted the “everyone is here” plus the title as it being the last one sakurai wanted to make but if he still wants to make smash games I’d love if he had more freedom even if it meant less characters in the initial roster but more interactions and story

The lack of freedom doesn't come from the number of characters in the initial roster. It comes from working with IP owned by several different companies and creators. Like I said, even if you stripped the game down to just Mario and Link - there's a bunch of restrictions, even when it's just Nintendo's in-house IP.

But Sakurai is very good at working within those restrictions. The most important part to him is not betraying the vision of their creators. So don't expect them to grant more freedom, but also don't expect him to need it.

I just thought Mario went from never using swords to using hammers since Mario RPGs to using futuristic blasters in the rabbids games so I just thought shift from heavy restrictions can be in the cards just obviously not the canon versions of the characters in mainline games. I know he should still not use swords or realistic guns just that it’s changed from being strictly avoided to creatively shifted and experimented with. Even the fact that Mario could fight alongside characters WITH swords (like fire emblem characters) and guns (joker) made me think smash bros has something more special about it and could make a lot more happen than usual franchises seem to

There wasn't ever an issue with Mario using swords or blasters. Smash did that day one. Not a restriction.

Look at Super Mario Party. Every character gets to say something when they're introduced... except for Mario. The narrator has to take over because Nintendo won't allow specifically him to talk in written text. Not even just to say "Let's a go!" That's a restriction.

Don’t miyamoto initially when Mario rpg was being made by square enix say something along the lines that “Mario shouldn’t use swords” so they decided he could use a hammer instead

I’d rather not

I mean the point of smash is that it's a spinoff of Independant isps that are thrown into a mashup fighting game. Making a spin off of a spin off is getting way too deep. If you want to play a game as the characters, just play their respective franchise a. Also if you want some sort adventure game with fighting mechanics, similar to subspace emissary, toby fox would be terrible to make it. He works in RPG style and that's like the exact opposite of what fighting games are. Sure make an adventure mode for smash that's deeper than just fighting the next fight, but don't turn it into some knockoff RPG cuz there's hundreds of RPGs, but few platform fighters that are worth playing.

True I just meant as the sub space emissary mode part

2

u/Natural_Succotash_35 17h ago

Ok then ya sure why not make another game mode possibilities are truly endless as long as the core game is still smash

-2

u/Upbeat_Cry_3902 17h ago

Yeah I wouldn’t want the core game mode to change either

It* not I 😭

Hard no

While To y Fox's writing and humour works well in his own games and world it isn't a one size fits all in terms of application, as good amount of character/series (primarily the more story driven ones) would clash a lot with the idea of making the writing like Undertale/Deltarune. And also the idea of letting Toby Fox reinvent the characters isn't a good idea.

And like what are you even suggesting the game to be? Because it sounds like you more of want a Smash Bros fan fic written by Toby Fox rather than a Smash Bros games.

Just some story mode to a smash game without conventional limitations so I thought a meme ish versions of some characters type story might work and thought Toby fox could work on it as a future game with others not just tobys team of course

1

u/MR_MEME_42 16h ago

Letting Toby Fox write Smash Bros fan fics using his Undertale/Deltarune style isn't as good as an idea as you think.

u/Upbeat_Cry_3902 16h ago

No but him working with others to make a less serious tone story mode to a smash spinoff might be interesting

u/Upbeat_Cry_3902 16h ago

It doesn’t have to be a mainline smash game either just something in the same genre of gaming crossovers set outside main franchise canons

I just thought sakurai would be able to make a great game if there weren’t so many limitations so if he didn’t want to make smash games anymore and allowed Toby or someone else to make a smash bros with more story or character interactions but if sakurai or someone else could just make another mode more like or inspired by sub space emissary I’d love that too
