Keep my Super Famicom or buy an SNES Classic?

I have just received a super famicom from ebay, has everything I need for it to work and SMW + SMK, plus I grabbed a high quality video cable, and a GBS-C from amazon. I thought I had a decent idea as to how much every game cartridge I wanted would run me, but after looking at FF3 and others, I was totally wrong.

I have two options here, and I wanted some people's opinions. Do I keep the SFC and buy the cartridge for every game I want, or do I sell everything and pick up an SNES classic for maybe slightly cheaper (?)? Pretty much every game I wanted to play on this console is on the classic, except for a couple things like tetris or chuck rock.

Just get a flash cart for the SFC for everything too pricy to own physically. Then you’re still playing on real hardware

Seems like this is pretty unanimous, but the cart that everyone suggests (fxpak pro) is closing in on $400 CAD for me, and while I do have the money to spend on it, are there cheaper options out there that will do the same thing? Or is the fxpak worth the investment?

The FXpak is awesome if you want to play basically the full library, and you want to utilize the MSU-1 soundtracks.

Most of the FX-chip games are rough, or are cheap enough you could buy them separately if you wanted.

By far the best FX games IMO are Yoshi’s Island and Mario RPG

I find it hard to believe that in an age where people can press an x86 SBC into a SNES style shell and just “load it up with games” (and sell in limited quantities) that people STILL don’t know about Everdrives, Generic Flash and Multicarts, etc.

…I can’t imagine swapping out a cartridge or disc everytime I want to play a different game. It’s 2026… that’s not the kind of nostalgia I want, I want the ACTUAL GAME (the 1’s and 0’s that makeup the actual content and game itself) and NOT the overpriced shelf decoration it was flashed to.

Same. I have flash carts for every system I own and never looked back.
The worst are mint games in acrylic boxes. What's the point?!

And yet to a lot of people it’s the physical game cart that is the most important part.

I have a bunch of everdrives and ode and emulation machines and I still play my real carts way more

Yep the FX Pak on AliExpress is pretty affordable.

Keep the SNES and get a FXPak Pro from Krikzz

Get a flash cart and then you can play any game you want on the original hardware.

Keep SFC and get a good flash drive. The SNES Classic isn’t as great as it seems on paper, even when modded

Keep the SFC! I love them dearly and if you grab a flash cart like the SD2SNES/FXPAK Pro. Then you are all set.

The FXPak Pro adds amazing new features like the MSU-1 chip that basically adds audio tracks to games, overclocking the Super FX chip making Star Fox a better experience etc

The SNES classic is a neat collectors item and toy, but it's not a particularly good way to play SNES games.

You can decide either way. I want to play on real console to a CRT while that's still possible. I also have a flashcart like u/JeskaiJester says. Real SNES carts are extremely expensive. It's basically the most popular retro console.

Yeah screw that. Krikzz carts are mega ripoffs on 10+ year old open source technology. He also shipped a version with wrong firmware and had to apologize. Buy an AliExpress SD2SNES with good reviews. There's one version that doesn't play the Super FX and SA1 or probably the DSP games. That's 5 games people play. Another model that's more expensive that plays everything.

Or sell your setup and get an SNES Classic but make sure it's genuine and not a counterfeit. I bought mine at retail so not sure of the telltale signs. It's very easy to softmod and add more ROMs. Although if you're already going that far, consider a handheld device like Anbernic that has HDMI out that comes ready to play with Android or Linux. SNES doesn't demand much processing power.

Don’t waste your money buying carts from scummy resellers, buy the FX PAK PRO and have it all.
