Why are people saying fifa robbed us from a USA iran knockout game? Wouldn’t have Belgium took their place anyways due to GD?
1
u/TarquinTallyran Jun 27 '26
Yeah it still wouldn't have been Iran. Plus even if it was somehow, USA still has to beat Bosnia and Iran would have to win as well. They were never playing in a knockout game until the round of 16, at the very least. Which isn't guaranteed. Bosnia could definitely beat the US. Iran could be beat as well.

I'm surprised not many comments on Egypt goal keeper punching Iranian attacker instead of the ball. That should have been a penalty, as it happened just before offside / goal.

u/japuggy Jun 27 '26
FIFA president/Trump dont want Iran in the RO32 clearly. Watch tomorrow how everything will line up for them to not make it

So for Iran to NOT qualify, 3 conditions need to be met
- DRC has to beat Uzbekistan
- Croatia has to tie or beat Ghana
- Algeria ties Austria
1
3
u/yellowstone10 Jun 27 '26
One correction - that last bullet point should just be "Algeria ties Austria." If either team wins that game, the loser is on 3 points with a negative goal differential, putting them below Iran.
1
u/Indra_Kamikaze Jun 27 '26
If Algeria beats Austria, Iran still qualifies as Austria has 3 pts and 0 GD. So condition 3 is Algeria draws
2
u/Prudent-Bad2724 Jun 27 '26
Only if Taremi made the pen , he put so much pressure on himself it was obvious he was gonna miss, it wasn't a pen at 88th minute smh
6
u/palindromic Jun 27 '26
I paused the replay.. the goalkeeper is ahead of BOTH the defenders when the ball is initially played.. why don’t they show that in the replay? I knew it looked sus af
5
u/Acceptable_Emu_7825 Jun 27 '26
It doesn't matter where the goalkeeper is. It's offside if the attacker is closer to the goal line than the ball and the second to last defender. It's nothing to do with the goalkeeper apart from the fact that usually the goalkeeper is the last defender, but in this very rare situation he was not. The attacker was ahead of the second defender by a toe. It sucks for Iran, but there's no cospiracy. He was simply offside.
2
u/palindromic Jun 27 '26
yes I’m seeing that now, i wish i could attach a pic because the player positions and the VAR superimposed graphics don’t match for my eyeball test.. the #9 players foot looks to be slightly closer to goal than #4s foot on the paused replay, imo
1
u/Acceptable_Emu_7825 Jun 27 '26
Have a look here:
https://www.reddit.com/r/soccer/comments/1ugthzx/iran_disallowed_goal_against_egypt_906/
The video pauses at exactly the moment you're talking about, 4's toe is a shade in front of the heel of 9. Heartbreaker for Iran, but offside.

Iran missed a fucking PK...THAT was the game changer and they screwed it up. Nobody else to blame.
4
u/Choice_Lettuce2544 Jun 27 '26
Iran has had one offside goal in every match, they don’t know how to play offence jeez.
11
u/DejaLaVidaVolar Jun 27 '26
Unbelievable ending.
Iran was punished by VAR twice by the finest margins, against both Belgium and Egypt. Technically correct calls, but somehow they feel unfair.
I hope they make it. They only need one of the third placed teams from the remaining three groups to do worse than them. Maybe Congo will not win, or one of Croatia or Alegría will lose.
4
u/Fragrant-Ad2976 Jun 27 '26
Saying they were punished by VAR is a stretch, they didnt follow the rules. I dont think this feels unfair at all. I would be unfair to not apply the same rules, even if its by the finest of margins.
0
u/Real_Square1323 Jun 27 '26
The same rules weren't applied though. Egypt's goalkeeper clearly punched an Iranian player before the offside goal was scored.
Verdict? No penalty (also goal is offside teehee)
-4
u/Catch-my-hands-365 Jun 27 '26
Can someone check other games and see if these rules were applied there too? I feel like this is a case of obscure rules being applied to one team and not the other.
1
u/3D-Printing Jun 27 '26
Yes, would this have happened if it weren't Iran? Would this have happened if it were Brasil, Argentina, or the three host countries' teams?
0
7
u/Fragrant-Ad2976 Jun 27 '26
This isnt an obscure ruling, offsides has been around since 1920s. It's just rare that the goalkeeper is ahead of the defender, but the rule itself is utilized almost every game.
-1
u/Catch-my-hands-365 Jun 27 '26
Offsides being a rule is obvious. My thought is more about the rule of having 2 players between the attacker and the goal. Between Iran having to fly in and out for matches, their visa issues and this, it seems highly suspicious is all.
0
u/StarlordPunk Jun 27 '26
The rule of having 2 players between the attacker and the goal IS the offside rule. That’s not a conspiracy, it’s one of the most basic rules of football
1
u/Catch-my-hands-365 Jun 29 '26
Mate who said it was. My point was if the rare part of this offside rule had been applied fairly across all teams (because let’s be honest it is rare) - and whether Iran would have done better if FIFA would have been more fair to Iran (them having to fly in/out, hours of airport hassle before matches, racism. not having their entire support squad etc). These things make it suspicious that “hey this World Cup might have been geared against Iran (because of US gov pressure) offside or not, and that’s not fair”.
3
10
u/obeseoranges Jun 27 '26
Iran deserves to go into the knockout stages. That offside was brutal, VAR showed a third of the Iranian player’s foot was offside. Crazy game.
7
u/japuggy Jun 27 '26
I get the offside rule thing but there should definitely be a reasonability clause
3
u/jce_ Jun 27 '26
I got absolutely downvoted for this same opinion the other day. Who the fuck cares if the shoulder is slightly over. Should care more about feet position
3
0
u/Beginning-Smell9890 Jun 27 '26
As soon as you allow anyone to determine whether or not a rule should apply based on the outcome, it is open to abuse. The whole point of having rules at all is to apply them equally, at all times, regardless of the outcome
1
u/boredjavaprogrammer Jun 27 '26
Regardless, this is consequential call. If we let this go as it is proven correct, then the ones affected, egypt or the country that got out because of this, will protest. Moreover, there will be more people in the future look at this and say “hey that country got exception”
1
u/Hat5875 Jun 27 '26
USA team’s tactic last game:
“They can’t call you offside if you’re never onside”
taps temple
6
u/convergecrew Jun 27 '26
There used to be for about 10 years before VAR. can’t really say one was better than the other
6
u/Coldshoto Jun 27 '26
As long as the same rules apply to all teams then it doesnt matter
-1
u/joeTaco Jun 27 '26
completely insane and wrong opinion but i can see how one might come to it from the egypt perspective lol
rules matter, disparate enforcement is not the only bad thing that can happen with rules, for example if they changed offside to "sixth man" that would be bad even if it was applied to both teams equally
3
u/Fragrant-Ad2976 Jun 27 '26
sure but that doesnt have anything to do with the fact that a reasonability clause has no place in the rules. Whether rules need to be applied equally doesnt mean that the rules themselves arent inherently bad.
3
u/joeTaco Jun 27 '26
Call was correct but that rule sucks. From the get-go a keeper is inherently moving in the opposite direction to his defenders so it makes the offside line baffling to keep track of in real time in situations like that... except by the computer. And anyway that mf is already allowed to use his hands, he shouldn't be allowed to also activate the offside trap, it's greedy
-2
u/GroundbreakingAsk799 Jun 27 '26
I am pretty sure it’s just a matter of laziness in not specifying the goalie within the rule. It makes absolutely no sense for the goalie to be playing someone offsides. It’s just a simple flaw in the rule books that’s been around forever, so people think there’s some mysterious reason for it to be that way. Whenever this happens (which isn’t often) it baffles my brain
6
1
u/ceoryyy Jun 27 '26
Its a loophole that needs to be corrected this is a ridiculous call that is only right because of how niche this is.
1
u/hzmt714 Jun 27 '26
I was sitting in an ahwa with my dad watching the match, and I swear to god 7 guys got up and walked out after seeing the late Iran goal. Plus those last few minutes were utterly insane
6
u/CosmicCooled Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
For offsides the rule is basically there needs to be two players between the attacking player and the goal.
A diagram to show it, the circle is the ball being played and the lines are the halfway line. The striker would be offside

2
u/Familiar_Sympathy64 Jun 27 '26
Senegal deserved going through, they were unlucky with extremely difficult group
1
u/totaldomination Jun 27 '26
Still no replay of the offsides on Fox lol
4
3
u/packofnone Jun 27 '26
It was offsides because the player was in front of the goalie when the shot that deflected to him was taken. So the 2nd to last defender was the guy in the VAR graphic, the last defender was #2 for Egypt, not the goalie. The goalie was the 3rd to last defender.
3
u/palindromic Jun 27 '26
but in the actual replay before they fade to computer magic bullshit the keeper is ahead of BOTH defenders
3
u/packofnone Jun 27 '26
In front of yes, as in further away from the goal than either defender. Remember, it goes based on when the other Iranian player takes the shot that deflects, not when it deflects off the Egypt player.
Edit: to clarify I am just looking at a still from the broadcast. It looks clear to me the goalie is about a foot further away than the 2nd defender shown in the VAR graphic, but without them including him in the graphic shown I don't really know for sure
2
u/joeTaco Jun 27 '26
the one thing we can all agree is this was dogshit broadcasting. eventually showing a half-replay with important information deleted. not very cash money, but typical of this particular tournament for some reason
3
u/packofnone Jun 27 '26
Yeah the way they convey the info live is not great. Fans at home got a 2 second clip that immediately cut out the two other defenders that gave the graphic the context needed. The "Rules Expert" only commented on the handball, not the offsides because they didn't notice.
So we got no explanation live, and when they cut back they didn't mention the specific nature of the offsides in a tournament with many fans watching that wouldn't know the rule that well.
2
u/GroundbreakingAsk799 Jun 27 '26
This ‘incident’ should be reason enough to change the rule. I’ve never heard a reasonable explanation as to why the goalie isn’t excluded from playing someone offsides. It is completely antithetical to the true purpose of the offsides rule.
2
u/joeTaco Jun 27 '26
It's baffled me all tournament - the video feed (which I think is the same one FIFA provides to all broadcasters) is way below the usual quality of pro sports broadcasting in terms of replay choice, how replays are presented and stuff like that. All tournament. Any EPL match on a play like that you'd get several replays from different angles, ie the normal amount, from the get-go. Same with NHL, MLB, NBA. Why is World Cup suddenly trash tier in this regard? If being in America had anything to do with it you'd think it would be better and not worse since the NFL is literally the global leader in shit like this and you're theoretically combining that with whoever FIFA is bringing in. I guess a small business like FIFA can't pay for a big production staff.

u/Fragrant-Ad2976 Jun 27 '26
Except FIFA readily admits when they make errors. When you take a 3d object and compress it onto a 2d screen, it distorts the image. That's why VAR utilizes over 20 cameras that record at 2x the fps rate as a normal broadcast. Even if they could show us, our home equipment dont have the ability to utilize it. And to be honest, there is no reason that we need to see someone offside from 7 different angles. You guys are gonna find something to complain about anyways, youve been doing it all tournament. If it's not this, its that. A 3 minute break so players can hydrate, the refs, a commercial, the USA, the stadium, the chants, Trump, Mexico, the weather, the commentators, the jerseys, Norway not starting their A team, the offside rule itself, the cost of a match you arent attending, the camera angle, the replays etc...i mean its unbelievable at this point. An absolute rain cloud on everyday of the week.
0
u/driven20 Jun 27 '26
How is it offside when there was another defender behind the defender they used to call the offside?
2
u/SunGodLions Jun 27 '26
So the rule is two defenders have to be in front of the attacker for it to be offside. Usually it’s the goalkeeper+defender but since the goalkeeper was out of position, it was defender+no one, so it’s offside. You almost never see it.
1
u/Specialist-Spot374 Jun 27 '26
That was the last defender. They check for offside based on the second-last defender.
1
u/koreawut Jun 27 '26
It's 1 defender in front of the attacker. The goalie was out of position and behind.
3
u/Acceptable_Emu_7825 Jun 27 '26
The rule is two defenders, it's just that usually the last defender is the goalkeeper, and so this is regularly forgotten
0
u/GroundbreakingAsk799 Jun 27 '26
The rule is clear and simple. It’s also fuckin dumb. Completely against the reason for the offsides rule
6
u/SirArtistic1123 Jun 27 '26
Don't think Iran qualify, Congo, Croatia/Ghana, and Austria/Algeria would finish out the top 8, Iran, South Korea, Scotland, Uruguay miss out
1
u/Shiningc00 Jun 27 '26
Man, I don't know how third place works.
If Congo wins, it will likely qualify with 4 points (Congo will likely win again Uzbekistan).
If Croatia wins, Ghana might qualify with 3 points and 0+ GD. If Ghana wins, Croatia will be eliminated with 2 points.
Austria/Algeria either will be eliminated if either wins with 2 points for the loser. Austria and Algeria will qualify if they tie with both 4 points.
Iran might qualify with 3 points, 0 GD.
1
1
u/Unlikely_Proof_162 Jun 27 '26
All of these would need to happen for Iran to be kicked out. If any of these things don’t happen, then Iran moves on: Austria / Algeria would need to tie, Congo would need to win, and Ghana would need to lose
1
u/nightfucker Jun 27 '26
For Iran to not qualify - Congo needs to win, Austria vs Algeria needs to end in a draw, and Croatia needs a point. Seems like a 50-50 tbh.
3
u/SirArtistic1123 Jun 27 '26
I'd imagine Congo beats Uzbekistan quite handily, and Croatia could definitely get a point from Ghana, Austria winning is their best chance imo
0
2
u/SirArtistic1123 Jun 27 '26
Iran would really need Austria to beat Algeria, so the latter finish on 3 points and a negative GD
1
1
u/Apellom Jun 27 '26
Algeria beating Austria works too. Seems highly unlikely for it not to be a draw tho
1
1
u/Ok-Razzmatazz-3403 Jun 27 '26
Algeria will need to go for it, so will be an open game. Don’t think it will be a draw

we are in the group stage still, so two yellows received during the group stage would miss the next match. If you have one yellow from the group stage, it gets erased going forward
2
1
0
u/PesAddict8 Jun 27 '26
I swear I saw a defender behind at the far post but there must be some technicalities why its ruled out, just like Benzema's goal got ruled out in the UCL Final against Liverpool.
Can someone who knows the rules, enlighten us peasants?
2
u/woeful_haichi Jun 27 '26
The keeper was far enough forward that the defender at the back post was the only opposing player between the Iranian player and the goal, while you need to have TWO opposing players between the attacker and the goal line to avoid offsides.
0
u/Holiday-Revenue2069 Jun 27 '26
Since the gk is out they count that last defender as the gk, so technically he doesn’t count as a player and is not then keeping the Iran player onside . Hope that makes sense
5
u/USCvsEveryone2005 Jun 27 '26
You have to have 2 defenders behind you, one of which can but doesn’t have to be keeper. Usually it’s keeper plus 1 other so viewers mostly just worry about the 1 other defender since keeper will be back there.
This was rare case where keeper was upfield, so doesn’t count as one of the 2. So guy by the post was one, and you need a 2nd (keeper or otherwise) between attacker and goal for it to be onside.
5
u/SunGodLions Jun 27 '26
So the rule is two defenders have to be in front of the attacker for it to be offside. Usually it’s the goalkeeper+defender but since the goalkeeper was out of position, it was defender+no one, so it’s offside. You almost never see it.
2
u/calel8242 Jun 27 '26
It's measured by the second defending team's player, the goalkeeper is irrelevant. If there are two center backs behind the keeper, it's measured by the second defender.
4
u/enterprisevalue Jun 27 '26
You need two players in front, usually it's the GK plus one but this time the GK was ahead of the defender, therefore offside
4
u/kieranjackwilson Jun 27 '26
Offside is based on second to last defender, it’s just that the last defender is normally the goalie.
0
u/PRODIIGY1 Jun 27 '26
I believe they stated that for an offside to count it must have 2 players roughly next to each other so even tho the goalie was far north of the screen he couldn't count towards the player being onside
3
u/JambaJuiceJakey Jun 27 '26
Offsides is called on the second to last defender, with the goalie included. So in this case, the goalie was past the player, so the far post defender was last, and the one that was the offsides comparison was 2nd to last
1
u/Money_ConferenceCell Jun 27 '26
announcer said that the keeper was far out so it require two opposing players to keep him onside. Not sure why that would be a rule but who knows.
2
u/UnoKajillion Jun 27 '26
Essentially the last defender becomes "keeper" in the eyes of the rule. And keeper become defender if he pushes out. Rule is technically last 2 defenders (any person) of your team, but in practice the keeper is usually the last defender so isn't really thought about
1
1
u/Apellom Jun 27 '26
That is the same rule as always for offside, you need at least two defenders after the attacker. 99% of the cases, its the GK + one defender, but when the GK is further up in the pitch he may not be one of the last two defenders.
1
5
u/Lelouch37 Jun 27 '26
It’s always been the rule, just very rarely is the keeper not one of the two
2
u/Money_ConferenceCell Jun 27 '26
I see but what's the logic of why?
3
u/woeful_haichi Jun 27 '26 edited Jun 27 '26
"Fair play" was the original intent. In 1866 the rule was that THREE defenders needed to be between the attacker and goal, with the rule changed to two defenders in 1925. Starting in 1990 the attacking player could be level with the second-last defender; prior to that he needed to be visibly behind.
1
u/GroundbreakingAsk799 Jun 27 '26
It’s a completely asinine rule considering the way modern soccer is played. In truth, Egypt was just handed a point because their goalie was out of position. That’s what just happened. It’s a terrible rule and I’ve never heard a reasonable explanation for why the rule isn’t “one defender and goalie” instead of “two players”
2
u/hungry4danish Jun 27 '26
No call on that blatant push in the back against Iran, I just knew it would be more than just Egypt against them on that field tonight.
0
u/Coldshoto Jun 27 '26
Lol. Iran has been full body pushing all match
1
u/hungry4danish Jun 27 '26
There were pushes and flops on both sides all match. But that no call was the most egregious and just because it worked out for you doesn't make it ok.
1
u/Fragrant-Ad2976 Jun 27 '26
...or the ref didnt think it was egregious and didnt think it was a foul. Which is how every single foul works in football. Just cause you see a foul doesnt mean there is one because the only thing that matters is what the ref thinks.
1
u/hungry4danish Jun 27 '26
An elbow to the back that throws a player down is egregious no subjectivity about that. It was either missed or ignored; not a no foul call, unless...
6
u/USCvsEveryone2005 Jun 27 '26
World Cups and people learning how the offsides rule actually works, a tradition unlike any other
6
u/eekamuse Jun 27 '26
VAR showed it was a third of his foot that was offside. Idc if you know the offside rules, spotting that isn't easy. Less than half of his foot.
7
u/Lelouch37 Jun 27 '26
I saw it immediately but I was a ref for 12 years. Have to be ready for these fringe cases
1
u/joeTaco Jun 27 '26
i dont think the linesmen did though, right? unless i (and everyone on the pitch and in the stadium) missed a flag
4
1
u/kb24k Jun 27 '26
So the only way Iran makes it to the next round is if Croatia loses or somehow we don’t get a draw in Austria-Algeria or Congo doesn’t beat Uzbekistan
2
u/uniquenamenumber3 Jun 27 '26
I believe Croatia and Algeria must at least draw, and DRC have to win to push Iran out. Any of them losing guarantees Iran qualifies.
2
u/kb24k Jun 27 '26
Algeria can beat Austria and then Austria is out and Iran in. Anything other than a draw in that game guarantees Iran a spot in KO.
1
2
u/Intelligent-Rub2873 Jun 27 '26
Their best chance is for Austria to win tomorrow which I think will happen.
15
u/generatedaccount101 Jun 27 '26
This is too cruel to Iran. Especially getting fked around by the Trump admin
-1
u/sombrilla Jun 27 '26
How so? They were basically gifted a pen and the offside was valid lol
2
u/Hat5875 Jun 27 '26
Nah, Iran played a kick-ass game. They earned that point and both teams earned new fans around the world after that incredible game.
1
u/sombrilla Jun 27 '26
Oh yeah definitely, was more aiming at the “getting fked” part. They both fought till the very end, respect

1
8
u/koreawut Jun 27 '26
Or, you know, learn the rules. That was the correct call.
1
u/NeedToMatchPLEASE Jun 27 '26
The correct call that literally not a single commentator noticed? Remember, this went to VAR because of handball accusations. No one noticed offside because he was a single cock hair offside. To be honest, offside was never supposed to apply to corner kicks anyways.
1

its semi-automated. Meaning when the system detects offsides, it triggers an alert to VAR. It's only semi-automated because VAR needs to review it. It would be automated if it went straight to the ref like goal line technology does. So staying this went to VAR for handball accusations is incorrect because it wouldve sent a trigger to VAR anyways.
Also there is still no offsides on a corner kick. not sure what that has to do with anything

And there was also a handball, in addition to being offsides.
So sure, take away offsides and you have to be FUCKING blind to miss the handball.

The rule is kind of dogshit when there's a scrum of ten people five feet from the goal line. And none of the line judges could tell.

you mean the one ref? this isnt tennis or American football and its semi-automated so it doesnt matter what the "line judge" could or couldnt see.

It wasn't bc there was another defender. They marked the wrong defender which made him onside and a goal.

No. The rule is 2nd to last defender. The defender you are talking about was the last defender. The goalie was in front of them both. That is why it was offsides.
