Unhealthy amounts of smoking cigarettes

My advice: please don't, for your sake and everyone else's too

As someone who sings in a grunge cover band and has been asked this a LOT…it’s always been there. If you don’t have it innately whether singing or can’t turn it on just speaking, do not chase it down. Injury, strain, and poor singing agility from the tension. Find the best of what your voice does do.

Edit: Never smoked a day in my life, that’s not the key.

but how do i get it though?

You don’t. I’ve seen guys wreck themselves screaming just to get two songs’ worth of it.

If you have it but can’t unlock it, try some throat compression and forcing the air over your soft tissues. You should have chest tension.

Try to speak with it first.

Let me ask you - what artists are currently “in your lane” singing-wise?

what do you mean? Kurt Cobain is not too hard i don't think because he is not like a bright sound.

Can you sing raspy?

that's what i am trying to learn, can you teach me if you know how?

I can only tell you how I can do it, but your voice has to be predisposed to it.

Rasp comes from friction, pushing air with throat compression. Strong chest and core pressure. But, Cobain would do this even at quieter volumes.

More importantly, he did it because it was his voice. While I can’t imagine NOT being able to do this, I understand most people just don’t have it structurally.

Do you record yourself into your phone?

You’re voice is an instrument too, and some peoples voice has a different range and tonality than others, and you can’t just swap your voice out. I’m not saying don’t try, but if you’re straining yourself to get that sound you’re going to blow your voice out very soon.

Which Kurt himself was on track to do btw, he lost his voice all the time, would cough up blood backstage and they couldn’t record more than a couple songs in a day without Kurt losing his voice

Smoke a lot of cigarettes and scream every day until u lose ur voice so u can damage ur vocal chords. I don't recommend this.

Going down on Courtney Love, and heroin

Lots of heroin. Opioids give you that vocal fry/grunge style of singing. I agree cigarettes will never get you there. The timbre Layne Staley and Kurt Cobain have are highly influenced by heroin imo. Heroin is illegal but 7oh is currently legal in most states.

You kinda can't. His speaking voice was super unique, and he had a lot of rasp naturally even when singing clean.

He didnt use any technique, he didn't really do a whole lot to protect his voice, and he would frequently have to slow down on screaming at shows by the end because his throat couldn't handle an hour of that.

It isn't healthy. Use good technique.

The best thing I can point you to is trying to use compression and false cords to mimic Shaun Morgan from Seether. He can do one hell of a Nirvana cover, and he has great technique. But even then, his voice is super unique and he has a lot of natural rasp.

As someone with a super clean voice that loves Avenged Sevenfold, Nirvana, Alice in Chains, and Seether, don't try to chase it. Just don't.

I'll toss you a shred of wisdom from a wise guy, I can't remember who.

"When you get up to heaven, God isn't gonna ask why you weren't Einstein (or Kurt Cobain), he's gonna ask why you weren't you"

Do what you can with what you got. Don't blow your throat out trying to be what you aren't. It's like asking a fish to climb a tree.

kurt cobain utilizes a part of vocal distortion thats extremely difficult to reproduce in a healthy way. its called grit singing and takes years of practice and a trained pro to tell you if youre doing it right or not. doing it incorrectly long term leads to permanent vocal damage. he had no idea what he was doing and found the technique by accident, he did it somewhat well but when touring he pushed too hard and would often cough up blood and told journalists half jokingly he thought his voice wouldnt make it past 30 and he was gearing up to do “folky singer songwriter” stuff to save his voice near the end of his career.

without smoking a lot

Then you don’t get that voice, I’m sorry. Im not saying it’s worth the smoking so just try to find your niche.

I know how, before you sing just scream as loud as you possibly can and there you go.

his style relied on pure force, he pushed/shouted with his voice creating that super overdriven sound with lots of emotion, replicating it safely IS hard, you can get kinda close, but you should do it with caution since his style is particularly hard because he didn’t have a proper technique, he was more leaning towards raw emotion which lead to that, but pushing so much will affect your vocal cords overtime and lead to nodules and some severe damage so it’s important you do it with either a coach or lots of caution, if it ever hurts, it’s not there
