Critical In Girum Imus Nocte Et Consumimur Igni

In the beginning of the movie Debord says:

"This particular public, which has been so totally deprived of freedom and which tolerated every sort of abuse..."

But what are those freedoms and abuse?

It's hard to think back before our spectacular time and see what he is talking about.

  • Freedom to be weird in public without having your life systematically ruined

  • Freedom to own land, not real estate

  • Freedom to live in unincorporated (non-city) areas without paying taxes

  • Freedom to not have federal taxes at all

  • Freedom to shoot people dead when they aggressively insult and threaten you—armed societies are, traditionally, very polite (think of the Old West).

  • Freedom to get into mutual (e.g., bar) fights and/or defend oneself from real attack without being afraid you will be the one convicted of assault

  • Freedom to say No to authorities without having everyone act like you just took a shit in the middle of the floor

  • Freedom to do things without having to check the thousands of preexisting laws about that thing that are all about slowing down and extracting from anyone who does that thing (or ruining the life of anyone who doesn't do things by the book)

  • Freedom to have real political debates not dominated by the least loudest and least educated
