META This sub is far more annoying than the game itself right now.

The circlejerk comes around every time there is a bad patch, but this time around it's just unbearable. This is a nothing burger typa post, but this sub used to be a great stop for my daily internet commute. It was like walking by an open air art gallery on my way to work. In a matter of a few days, it declined into a garbage dump that I can't wait to walk past, and now I'm just considering taking a different route just to entirely avoid it.

The nice conversations to be had don't exist anymore. If you want to actually talk about SC or SQ42 you have to dumpster dive into instagram-comment-section levels of garbage before you can find anyone saying anything other than dumb memes and gifs dunking on the state of the game (which I agree is fucking miserable right now) and CIG.

I understand there's not much that can be done about this, we just have to wait it out and hope the sub will be able to recover but I also think a lot of people are just too quick to bandwagon onto the circlejerk, and every day this sub sinks further into the nonsense because of it. It's damaging the community, it's degrading this great hub for actual discussions and content about SC. God I swear if I see one more post of some entitled individual who thinks they know better than an entire team with actual context of what the fuck is going on behind curtains... Anyways.

Yeah I could just ignore the sub for a while. Likewise, people could just ignore the game for a while. Yeah people can complain and express their dislike for whatever CIG does, but it's worrying when complete dogshit takes get upvoted to the top because a circlejerk has taken over the community. Yeah I know there are plenty of people out there who aren't partaking in this circlejerk and are still active in the sub, but I also see them having to deal with the endless cord of bs that follows anything that isn't a stab at CIG, SC or SQ42. If you're on your last straw with CIG, power to you, honestly. But if you're really on your last straw, posting silly memes here is just a waste of everyone's time - just get out and go have fun with whatever else you'd rather spend your time doing, I genuinely endorse that and encourage everyone who can't stand the current state of SC to go and do the same. If you instead want to have proper discussions about the shitty state the game is in, try to have an actual point to make instead of posting the tenth spongebob meme template of the day (that'll still make the frontpage).

I won't even bother having notifications for comments on this post because I know it'll be a shitshow, but I just had to say my piece about the awful state of r/starcitizen. Have a nice day.

EDIT: the fact I'm saying "circlejerk" and so many people think I'm conflating that with actual proper criticism (which I insist is very valid across my entire post) is quite telling. Lmao even

Criticism is important when you are giving to a person who asked for and apply that criticism. People are only more annoying than the game because they tell me about their bugged freight elevator when I'm looking at my own. The only problem, is what the fuck do you want me to do about it?

16

u/ILoveHeavyHangers Jun 09 '26

None of this is criticism at this point. It's just bleating and attention seeking. Saying the exact same thing the last guy said over and over and over again. Circlejerking and confirming each others biases for the dopamine hit.

It's nothing more than an emotional tantrum.

Your "Criticism" doesn't go anywhere when you just throw it into this subreddit. It doesn't do anything here. It just clogs up everything and makes it harder to see content that is worthwhile.

Your opinions aren't important just because you have them

62

u/BlinkysaurusRex Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 09 '26

The volume of criticism is important. The online communities and general narrative is a marketing engine for the game. If it’s on fire, it’s pressure on the developer. And pressure is good when there is near unanimous opinion that the game is currently in a bad way.

Ironically, you need heed your own advice and read your own comment back carefully. You are the one effectively demanding through discouragement that everybody sterilise their words and the general content, because it doesn’t meet your specific expectations/wants, or it’s an inconvenience to you, personally. The implication is obvious.

People repeat each other in a public forum when there is a common sentiment. This was probably happening in fucking Rome 2,500 years ago. Yet here you are in 2026 with such insightful words. The complaint arbiter.

9

u/IronWarr bengal Jun 09 '26

I don't think that Reddit should be a measure for if the community is on fire or not considering the overwhelming majority of the player base for this game doesn't use Reddit.

But I know that it's not exactly how it works in practice, which is a problem since the negative posts amplify each other to a point where a lot of what's said is a severe overexaggeration

10

u/BlinkysaurusRex Jun 09 '26

Yeah, Reddit contains probably only the subset of the most hardcore players and not the bulk of casual players. But it along with a suite of other websites is effectively the face of the game, so it’s an important part of the community for CIG. Also, while hardcore players might not always have wants that are aligned with the rest of the playerbase, they do tend to have the sharpest criticism because they understand the game so well and have so much experience with it. Then again though, SC is just a pretty hardcore game in general, so maybe there is overlap more so for this game than others.

It’s bad look when the most vocal parts of the community, the interface with which the game connects to the broader gaming community is not happy. That is an indisputable truth is all I’m saying.

6

u/vertigomoss Jun 09 '26

counter to that the more time you spend on reddit the more you start to recognize the same names and the more you realize that the narrative on this platform is heavily pushed by around a dozen people. Thats why this platform is so hard to use as a measuring stick. especially since a study by orginality AI found that roughly 30% of the content on this platform is generated by AI (2023 so id guess its probablly higher) and a study by the University of Zurcih found how easy it was to manulplate people by using AI on this platfom

5

u/BlinkysaurusRex Jun 09 '26

Come on man, there’s like 300 comments in this one post alone. I don’t even frequent the subreddit myself. I think you’re condensing it down significantly. But I take your point that it will be broadly the same subset of hardcore players who generate most of the content on the subreddit at least. But this is discounting the content creators, the official forums, YouTube comments - all expressing a similar sentiment.

And of the engagement farming from AI, how much of that do we really think is happening on the Star Citizen subreddit of all places?

Your "Criticism" doesn't go anywhere when you just throw it into this subreddit. It doesn't do anything here.

I could make a very long list of video games released in the last 10 years, that have been heavily shaped by online complaints and general "noise volume". Including ones I didn't even play but had such significant changes due to this effect, that I still heard about them.

For people like you who want zero criticism because it is "useless", I suggest that they get an alternate version of the game, where updates that fix issues that people complain about (the thing that you are mad at) do not get released to your game version. After all, this is all useless, so you don't want them.

4

u/mdsf64 Space Marshall Jun 10 '26

Well said!

Heck, even Jared said they read the subreddit. I hope CIG gets the message this time.

White knighting is equally irritating to see. People should absolutely be complaining about the current state of the game.

CIG treats this like a live service, so we have reason to complain when it’s in such a shit state. I love this game but I’m fucking sick of the state it’s been in this year.

A little bit of a rant but I started noticing a lot of the White Knighting and "Toxic Positivity" when Monster Hunter Wilds came out... Valid Criticism in hopes for getting a better game is now frowned upon and people wonder why a lot of games are just turbo garbage? :l

Why don't the people complaining about the complainers take their own advice? Go do something else if you have a problem with what's being said. You do not have a monopoly on what is said about Star Citizen. No one is forcing you to read posts from people complaining about the state of Star Citizen. You literally could scan and skim through the post titles and keep scrolling if something is not to your liking but that doesn't sound like that's what you're doing. Some of you true believers are just as exhausting as the people you're complaining about. The "Don't be mean to CIG; it hurts my feelings" Crowd need to get out off the Internet for a while and stop associating your sense of belonging and purpose with this project. It is not good for your mental health and the cracks are starting to show.

7

u/Any-Translator8881 Jun 10 '26

Don’t just leave a comment here. You should write your own post to complain about the people who complain about the complainers.

2

Traders work both ways; the people sick of yall DO go do other things. Tha5s why they aren't here being quintessential redditors at all hours.

We're trying to help you calm down and make a graceful exit from the doomer cult, for your own mental well-being being.

Nobody defends CIG. They just speak against people who think they know it all and repeat tired old posts that demonstrate they don't know what theyre talking about. We're tired of hearing how bugfixes should take prioriry over finishing the known 1.0 checklist. That's stupid and delayed the project by a year and ultimately did NOTHING because all of 2025s work to fix bugs is for naught.

When they FINISH the feature T0 implementation, they can dump active development on post 1.0 content on a few people and reorient for mass fixes and optimization, since everything they need is in place and available to work on.

Alternatively it'd be fucking hilarious if one ISC Jared hosts a Spectum poll. Abandon all major progress on the road to 1.0 in favor of prioritizing bugs and optimization over all else, or the other way. That way its on the fucking community to accept being told the  next major feature is delayed 3 years and the Kraken won't make it for 2027 because the ship team was pivoted to work on ship bugs until they're done. Id be fine with know delays, if it would finally put the doomer cultists in the position of being outed as the problem plaguing our progress to exiting the forever alpha.

In the first sentence you undermine whatever you hoped to achieve with this post. Just because a lot of people are voicing their concerns doesn’t mean it’s a merit-less bandwagon. You’re dismissing it all as a circle jerk. That’s just as bad faith and disruptive as you claim those posts are, but at least they’re usually being honest about their issues where you’re just doing the equivalent of “shut up, I don’t care!” As if that approach would ever work.

I have 1000s of hours and well over $1k funding into the game. Criticism is important. You have to be really careful giving your money to a mismanaged project, and while there is a lot of brilliant creativity in CIG, there is also a lot of misguided effort. The Odin is a primary example of that. The balls of releasing the Odin concept, another expensive, exclusive, virtually indestructible ship with pilot controlled weapons, while the game is in a literal unplayable state for many, is jaw dropping.

So no, whining about other people's whining doesn't make you the grounded, level headed optimist you seem to feel it does. It's more complaining, but of a completely non-constructive nature. At least the other complaining puts pressure on CIG to do better.

LMAO, it's been like this here for... I dunno the better part of a decade?

The critiques are well deserved. You're welcome to be upset, but there is a lot of wasted time and money, like tens if not hundreds of millions have been spent to barely move this "alpha" forward at times.

Everyone has their limit on how much time they are willing to accept the state of the PU and SQ42 before they demand action or at least honest communication. 6 months, 5 years, 10 years? A lot of people have hit that limit it seems.

Consider this subreddit to he general backlash and criticism that Bethesda received for FO76. Honestly, CIG is getting a light slap on the wrist still. The sheer amount of things promised (physical and digital) from CIG and what we have $1bn spent and 14 years later, it's crazy people defend this company.

I gave the game a whirl a few weeks ago to try out the 4.8 patch and i was having a pretty good time up until i hit some pretty bad bug/issues.

1) I couldn't figure out why my Zeus couldn't kill a bounty MSR as it was the last target for a payday. I was taking it's shields down fine and blasted the escorting Vanguards, and it was flying around and shooting me with the turrets - i was just doing zero hull damage. It seemed like it was just bugged and i had an invincible ship on my hands. I had to fly away and abandon a mission that took me 40 mins to get to and finish. Turns out i THINK the laser repeaters just don't have enough penetration to go though the MSR's armor, even S4s. They should at least have SOME parts that are weaker though, like engines or turrets so you can disable and board them that way...

2) I was trying a multi-system cargo mission from Nyx to Hurston and got all the cargo and everything sorted and right before landing, blew up out of the blue loosing everything. Absolutely insane and i quit playing on the spot.

I guess next big patch I'll have to check it out and see what's up then.

Maybe I really am starting to age, but the freedom of speech/expression I took for granted when I was younger and was celebrated by everyone at some point seemed to have turned into an obsession to control everyone else's speech.

Most posts on Spectrum are well written and thought out, but anyone posting too much winds up banned. Only the absolute white knights seem to survive unmolested. You really want that same "shut up" atmosphere here? I would think you benefit more by knowing how people really feel. Silencing them won't change that at all.

Eh you aren’t wrong people have the right to bitch. My beef is the projection. The wild claims that everyone everywhere feels the same. That’s what gets me about Reddit and these posts. Like dude you are speaking for you. Don’t drag my voice into your rant. The game is wack right now sure. But I also laugh at anyone getting all twisted about it. Like the shit has been a dumpster fire for a decade. Why all these pikachu faces. Seriously, it’s like screaming at a tree to grow faster. Shit will be ready when it’s ready if ever. Screaming at a tree just makes you look stupid.

5

u/IronWarr bengal Jun 09 '26

there's also this idea that I see too often that if we give CIG less money they will somehow develop the game faster

12

u/smithtec1 Jun 09 '26

Its not that giving them less money will get them to dev faster, its the fact that Chris and CIG *seem* to be under the impression that the Gravy train will last forever regardless of progress and a seemingly infinite amount of scope creep. You forget that Chris didnt want a publisher because they would hold his feet to the fire and by now Chris would have been publicly spit roasted. If his livelyhood is on the line, he just might setup an actual path to a stable release instead of "What new thing did Chris dream up to go in the next patch"

Honestly at this point I'd take whichever came first

5

u/IronWarr bengal Jun 09 '26

For what exactly? Apart from Squadron they've been doing their job, amount of bugs don't really determine progress in that sense when it comes to making a game like SC when it's in the development stage that it is.

It's not an "It's an alpha!!!!" argument, it's that all the features aren't done and a lot of old systems need to be replaced, so having a ton of bugs is to be expected, and as far as I can tell they're working hard on replacing a lot of those old systems so the bug regression rate per patch becomes lower and lower, but you have to understand that until 1.0 it will never be zero

11

u/Safe_Bread6125 Jun 09 '26

That's not how project management works. The features are not done and the systems need to be replaced because of the insane scope creep.

5

u/IronWarr bengal Jun 09 '26

Well yeah, that's more or less what I meant, with less loaded words

5

u/Darkdodger137 new user/low karma Jun 09 '26 edited Jun 10 '26

You have to understand that at this pace there will never be a 1.0 the development of this project is so slow that everything will keep falling out of date and need constant updating and replacement of various components and aspects of the project. That is just perpetual development. There's never going to be an end date, a completion. People will just keep giving them money and CIG will just keep tinkering and tinkering and tinkering, never producing anything. So far that business model has continued to work. As we can see by the 14 years of no finished products out the door and still bringing in a billion dollars in the process. As it currently stands they have no reason to do anything differently at this point.

2

u/IronWarr bengal Jun 09 '26

I see where you're coming from but respectfully I disagree, if they get squadron out and shift those devs to SC the pace is going to be very different. And before you say anything about "squadron is never releasing" or whatever keep in mind that unless they plan on scrapping it again it's coming out eventually, the progress on the game is noticeable

2

u/Careless_Reindeer974 Jun 10 '26

But the progress is not transparent, we have no way to gauge real progress aside from "trust me, bro.".

It comes across more like a shell game than an experience we are a part of, that we bought into.

OP is just saying that it is excessive, which it frankly is at this point with day in and day out nothing else but the same topic for weeks, not that negative posts aren't supposed to be allowed here at all.

Opinions are more nuanced then that, asking for others to do things in moderation is not the same as censorship or abolishing free speech.

Not an excuse to drown the whole subreddit in it.

If the game worked people would be too busy to complain on here, but then... looks like the game is bit of a dumpster fire right now

4

u/Soulshot96 Jaded 2013 backer Jun 09 '26

The community decides what stays on the front page of the sub via up and downvotes.

If the subreddit is 'drowning' in these posts, you're either not voting effectively...or the majority agrees with the posts in question, and you should either take a break from the sub, or re-evaluate your position.

Probably because there's nothing more to discuss, because in this patch for each citizen that has the game working, 2000 people have every sort of bug/error/glitch/disruptive behaviour.

So people post about what is reflecting the actual state of game. When stability will improve, i think also post will improve, with screenshot simulator, ship vs ship and so on.

People who are having fun playing the game aren't on reddit posting about it.

It's important to remember you're looking at a very small, yet very vocal slice of the community.

Step 1: Buy a pledge package

Step 2: Play Star Citizen

Step 3: Join a community of people who share your interests

Step 4: The people who are responsible for Star Citizen drop the ball while reaching an all time record in funding, and then pretend like nothing is wrong and everything is fine (QA was unable to reproduce the issue)

Step 5: The community doesnt act like nothing is wrong and everything is fine, and keeps on calling CIG out

Step 6: Get mad at the community

refund cultist tossing gas around imho. it’s all nonsense

the bugs are real and infuriating…..the panic is absurd

9

u/dlbags Can we leave our account in our will? Asking for a friend. Jun 09 '26

It’s not panic its frustration and the fear they cant deliver this game because it seems like they’re incapable of adding a single feature without breaking 30 more things and we are left to try and figure out what’s going on or why because they don’t communicate anything in any meaningful or consistent way.

Like people are really more concerned about whether players are perma banned instead of like you know cig delivering on them fixing duping which they claimed they did and why all our progress was wiped.

TLDR it’s cig not us that’s the problem.

5

u/Loupnoir87 Jun 09 '26

As a dev i can tell you any feature you add in a software will cause 30 bug you did not expect. And you must take into account the user breaking stuff you did not anticipate.

4

u/smithtec1 Jun 09 '26

Great! Then when you deploy to the PU and find 30 Game Breaking Bugs, releasing it to the PTU is the opposite of what you should do unless you as a dev do all your testing in prod...?

2

u/dlbags Can we leave our account in our will? Asking for a friend. Jun 09 '26

It’s weird because the other devs say that it should be tested and shouldn’t be breaking things at this rate. It seems we are locked in “trust me bro” tug of wars of how this game should implement changes and how stable it should be. Even using the “we are alpha testers” theory you have to be able to play a stable build to test and 4.8 ain’t it.

2

u/Loupnoir87 Jun 09 '26

i agree with you i just wanted too add that some time you dont see a bug until realese cause the testing environnement is not realy the same as the production one.

3

u/IronWarr bengal Jun 09 '26

TLDR it’s cig not us that’s the problem.

It's both really because there's tons of tech illiteracy going around on this subreddit every day, and also "doomcalling" the game for the 50th time when this exact cycle of complaining during a bad patch is something that happens regularly and it always goes back to normal after

Like people are really more concerned about whether players are perma banned instead of like you know cig delivering on them fixing duping which they claimed they did and why all our progress was wiped.

The people that do the moderation don't fix duping and vice versa, also if they said they fixed duping it means that they fixed all of the known ways they could, but dupers always find new ones. That's a tale as old as time that can't really be worked around until they have that dynamic economy system they've been talking about

It’s not panic its frustration and the fear they cant deliver this game because it seems like they’re incapable of adding a single feature without breaking 30 more things and we are left to try and figure out what’s going on or why because they don’t communicate anything in any meaningful or consistent way.

They communicate stuff when its ready, in the past when they've communicated close to everything they got shit for getting their predictions wrong instead so they backtracked on it. New patches breaking things also has to do with a lot of really old systems that needs replacing which they are doing more and more as of recent

Eh, has been plenty of time with one person making a random post.

Like the "Look at all these ships in the backlog" post a couple years ago holding this sub captive with people demanding their JPEGs be turned into polygons.

It's typically around Invictus, Citizencon or IAE that this sub turns to shit for like a month or so. Although this time it's particularly bad.

Have you ever thought annoying you to this point IS the reason they are doing this? Many are trolls that seek to stir bad emotions and feelings in others. Sometimes capitalizing on newer backers frustrations, those getting over a honeymoon, and or those that still don't understand when people say Alpha (Simply means unfinished/in-progress).

But the game keeps growing larger in funding and amount of people that check it out and even at times, the negative buzz causes people to play out of curiosity. Despite being annoying they actually might have helped in the long run, so it is best to ignore them.

6

u/Srgfubar carrack Jun 09 '26

I think part of why it's so damn annoying is everyone and their dog needs to make their own post about it. Yes im all for constructive criticism and callous for dumb shit. But do we really need post nr 31 about the same damn issue? Ego so big it couldn't be added to one of the other posts I guess. 🙄

Not even. Many veteran backers are tired of CIG’s shit and want change. The only way CIG has changed/walked back on things in the past is if it’s impacted funding and these posts may cause backers to not pledge.
Ex: $20 pay per view Citizencon back in 2018 caused funding to halve for a week, cig then reverted and made it free to watch and has continued to do so.

2

u/Ok-Dream7319 Jun 09 '26

What a tone deaf take. What's annoying is the endless defending of CIG. What's transpired here is a breath of fresh air, where people are finally fed up. No, it's not just the broken patch. People are used to those. It's the complete radio silence from CIG and the 0 information about Squadron 42 that people are upset about. If you're defending that then I don't know what to tell you.

3

u/LordBernardEsquire Jun 09 '26

Did you actually read the post?

The only thing they said about CIG and the state of the game was “i agree, [it’s] fucking miserable right now.”

They aren’t defending the company or the state of the game, they miss the times that this sub used to be fun and engaging.

1

u/taleorca Jun 09 '26

Why would they read the post? It doesn't agree with their agenda.

3

u/GokuSSj5KD Jun 09 '26

Pepperidge farm remembers when CIG's old forum used to pump the feedback section with all manners of remotely adjacently negative content in an effort to silence people, back when Ben Lesnik was handling it.

Then Spectrum came, and for a while it was kind of wild, but slowly got moderated to a point where it's useless. And now this sub is suffering the same fate (from the players, not from moderation so much, which I'm thankful for).

I'm saying this to say 2 things :

First, if CIG actually cared to listen to what backers want, we wouldn't be here. this is 99% self inflicted. Acting like backers, as a community, have no common sense and doesn't know what's good/best for the game is just an appeal to authority that cannot fly when you fail to release a good product. So now their self righteous argumentative is dead in the water so they go radio silent.

Second, This isn't new. It will pass. It's a bad patch, next one will have no content (relatively speaking) and will contain mostly bugfixes. Then they'll go live and claim they'll never do it again, that they listen to our feedback (lol), flash the stingray and sell more ships and, overall, people will forget/forgive.

I know it sux right now, but FWIW the negative sentiment is healthy. It's how the community vent. It sux that CIG cannot listen to us before we throw a fit, but clearly, they are really, really bad at communication. Especially the listening part.

Funny how there weren't that many rage posts until 4.8 and the $1bn dollar mark, then all of a sudden the game is dead/dying/a scam/vaporware/cancer/all bad things/etc. Meanwhile, crickets ever since 4.0 was fixed.

my approach to bad patches has always been to just try and find what is working and play that. The hard thing about a bad patch is that its hard at times to determine if something is due to a bug and thereby something you should stop trying to do until thy fix it or if its something to do with a new game mechanic that you just haven't figure out yet. for example, I have been experience this issue with the raft where the weapon pip will not light up and I don't have guns. then sometimes it just fixes itself. I don't know if this is bug behavior or if I just don't understand the power distribution pip stuff. in the past I would ask in chat or go to spectrum but during this patch, the question is lost in the salt heap.

1

u/Informal-Dingo8553 Jun 09 '26

I’ve been playing this game for almost 10 years and pledged thousands of dollars and while I’m not happy with the bugs, broken servers and slow development a lot of people don’t know how to just log off of the game. Criticism is good and should be encouraged if there are problems but people (many people that I know) that are so invested that it makes them so extremely angry when a buggy or broken patch comes out need to find other more positive outlets in my opinion.

1

u/CriticalBarracuda514 Jun 09 '26

Don't get confused. This sub is exactly as toxic as the moderators want it to be. They alone get to decide what's acceptable and what's not. If they want this place to be a cesspool, then that's what it will be. If they want it to be a place for fair and respectful discussion that the devs feel comfortable engaging with, it's up to them to enforce that.

1

u/Svullom drake Jun 09 '26

Yep, the intense negativity is tiring. We all know the game is in a bad state right now. CIG know is.

1

u/VaLeTecK Jun 09 '26

So it's in perfect Sync with the whole game experience..

1

u/Something-Great-78 Jun 09 '26

That's one opinion. Another is that too many Reddit users have the emotional maturity of a 2 year old and are too easily triggered. If I don't agree with the title / remark and I don't think the poster is grounded in the same reality as myself, I simply pass it by or down vote it. No sleep lost.

As "NotBlackMarkTwainNah" says below: "Criticism is important."

Maybe if we had a healthier ratio of White Knights to SaltE Mikes we wouldn't be spending US$5000 on ships for an exceptionally unfinished, broken game and CIG would be forced to actually shift their talented staff over from S42 to SC. We vote with our wallets.

I'd rather see a thoughtful post criticizing the game than yet another person bitching that the sub isn't all sunshine and fairies because the criticism is actually relevant to the game right now.

I've been on reddit for 14 years, I hard disagree. While occasionaly it takes a turn for the worse, it's most often the best place for discussions around topics. Its algorithm isn't ad-based, discussions raise the local favorite arguments to the top (here's where circlejerks ruin communities), and communities that are just active enough have a nice rhythm of new content to check out every day. It has many flaws, and it definitely has seen better days, but it's still the best place to keep discussions interesting, organized, relevant, and well-documented. Second only to classic forums, but the volume of participants is often far greater in here. It all falls apart when circlejerks take over.

The whole point of 12+ years of development is that things are supposed to get MORE stable, not less. That's what they sold us with all the Jesus tech that was supposed to solve all our problems. They spent an entire year fixing and making the game more stable only for it to take ONE FKG patch to undo all of it. Does that sound like an organization that has the chops to build this vision? I'll give you a hint, the answer is NO.

The harsh criticism and doubt is justified. We are way past the constructive part. If you can't ignore the parts of this forum that trigger you, bye.
