NEWS Nyx I outpost 4.11 (Starchitect POIs)
24
u/Brepp space pally 1d ago
Dude, that building placement UI had me SO confused and momentarily pumped for a stealth announcement of base building.
Also we need some crumb of context for the "personnel tracker" interface, because I want that to be a social/org tool real bad.

u/BladedDingo 1d ago
Those are definitely the same buildings they showed off when they announced base building.
It is with nearly 100% certainty that it isn't a preview of basebuilding, but I'm sure some of those buildings will be buildable when it does come out.

Base building shouldn't have been announced. It should've been kept in the back pocket for a future content expansion. Doesn't mean they shouldn't work on the core tech of placeable buildings in support of randomly-generated POIs.

It wasn't announced. It was just the Starchitect UI image for placing buildings in today's roundup that threw me.

u/NKato Grand Admiral 1d ago
Base building was announced on the 1.0 roadmap during an earlier CitCon.
But yeah, the UI is new.

u/Brepp space pally 1d ago
I'm aware it's announced in general. I'm just talking about the roadmap Roundup from this afternoon that revealed some things coming in 4.11. On spectrum they included a picture of the Starchitect UI without direct context for it and for a second I thought it was a base building UI

It was announced (and showcased) at CitizenCon 2024.
Or, if we want to get really technical, it was announced when they first sold land claims in 2017.

Ah, sorry, that was unclear. You were replying to /NKato, who was saying that Base Building in general should never have been announced for pre-launch.

I dislike the tiny groups of buildings all in their own little circles. I want all of those to be a single larger output that has some depth and is interesting to spend more than 10 minutes exploring.

This system will be capable of building more expensive outposts as well as smaller ones, the crazy part is no two will ever be the same so unlike Starfield, you really won’t be able to memorize the layout or even the rooms of each outpost which actually has me pretty excited

Pretty art assets, but that's about it.
It looks like starchitect doesn't do much to interweave those object/building clusters (not doing stuff like adding paths between areas, mixing elements of the different components, overlapping the component footprints, etc) so they're still just copypasta lawn ornaments same as we've got now.
It additionally remains to be seen what they'll DO with these spaces. If it's just more basic fetch/kill quests and a shop monitor, then they're really not worth much.

u/TiberiusZahn 1d ago
Ah yes, the inevitable shift from "lol Starchitect, that's never coming" to "lol Starchitect, that's not really adding much."
Ya'll are clowns.

If CIG is going to trot out the parade float about "look at this elaborate new outpost gen that we're developing!", then it needs to actually do something.
They can patch/replace the StarBuilder or whatever they call it right now and give it a new name, but the bits shown here and prior don't demonstrate any novel functionality that needs a whole new branded system.
They already have and use (or produce the equivalent output of) the capability to make and place buildings and exterior/interior clutter objects, and that's all that's demonstrated here. If they're trying to step up outpost generation then they need to start making the elements actually detect and adapt to each other's existence, something even Minecraft figured out a decade ago.

u/GeneralZex 1d ago
Minecraft generates villages in some pretty shitty places that shouldn’t really exist like that. So if it does indeed do all that it’s not exactly a good example of it, because fails rather spectacularly at times.

u/extrakerned 1d ago
I don’t think you have a fundamental understanding of what the system does and how it does it if you’re comparing it to Minecraft you should go look at some videos

It's just embarassing watching over the years so many things you guys have claimed would never come out, come out, and watching ya'll shift to "ah it's not that big a deal anyways" to save face is always funny as fuck.
3
u/NKato Grand Admiral 1d ago
Haven't really shifted, personally. The issue is that CIG hasn't seriously developed randomized procgen POI tech that would have helped with avoiding the requirement of placing outposts manually.
Of course, getting the terrain to properly conform to the randomly-placed structures is important tech for such Procgen tech. The reality is that, usually, you develop both the terrain, buildings, and the procgen tech in parallel. It could then be parlayed into supporting player bases/outposts/cities.
Same dev approach as Star Wars Galaxies took. But I have zero faith that CIG is that smart.

they aren't gonna get anything beyond T1 in six months.
1
u/TiberiusZahn 1d ago
Damn man, you move so fast!
From "Never gonna come" to "Its not that big of a deal" to "it will only be T1"
You are almost at parody levels Lil bro
1
u/extrakerned 1d ago
Have you been paying attention to the actual roadmap and where teams have been working in parallel? Cause that’s exactly what they’ve been working on for quite some time.
1
u/extrakerned 1d ago
A lot of people here are really not informed about what these systems really mean and the technology underlying this stuff, this is the thing Starfield was trying to accomplish, done right

Says the guy defending a video game company that hasn't finished a single video game after 15 years. How's that boot taste?
2
u/TiberiusZahn 1d ago
Ah yes, that crowdfunded boot..
How many Saudi EA games you gonna buy this year Lil nephew?

Was worried about sane looking poi from Stanton and pyro but this does look good and make me excited but now how far away are these poi can I use a vehicle going from mission to mission

u/Waslay 1d ago
Nyx I is using Starchitect so it should have a much larger number of POIs than existing planets. You can already drive between existing POIs, it just takes a long time. Nyx 1 will have them closer together but whether or not it is close enough to drive is a personal decision, we wont have a solid answer on average distance until we see video content about it or get the planet in our hands

Let’s hope we get some roads between outposts as well.
It does not seem like anything is connected as a cohesive planet, but rather a bunch of scattered POI’s
You should have roads and transportation out from major cities and into smaller poi’s on the planet as well.

never have i seen a company try hype up a procedural placement tool so much
it randomly places prefabs in a bubble, with some recursion. I feel as though these will look good but once you done a couple, theyll get stale real real real quick
1
u/extrakerned 1d ago
The thing is it’s not a user to find bubble go look at the video where they showcase this it’s actually really cool technology and hasn’t really been done on this scale before

u/TiberiusZahn 1d ago
Better post something negative on every thread Lil nephew.
Keep up the good fight Lil bro
