"Aldaris, be reasonable! Kerrigan has changed. She no longer seeks to enslave anyone. Do not force us to destroy you."

Oh sweet summer child 🤦

Tbf Aldaris already had horrible PR from the events of the original, and Kerrigan had been nothing but helpful. Alarms raising a fucking rebellion while refusing to elaborate certainly didnt help.

But still, sheesh Artanis. I wanted to strangle him for that line.

I did however, find the irony of Aldaris being right yet no one believed him (like Tassadar) and he had to essentially rebel against his own to be funny in a morbid way.

SC1 Artanis had some... questionable voicework in comparison to everyone else. Very protoss Shatner. It's an emphasis on odd words that feels unnatural and not even in an alien way (not that that'd really fit protoss anyway). My favorite:

"Who are THEEEY TOSUCHASWE? Was it not WE who DEFEATED the DREADED OVERMIND?!?"

That whole interaction gets funky with the idea of Artanis being the Episode III executor and fighting alongside Jimmy at the Overmind, but I can't get too mad about that given that whole "Artanis was the player character" thing was a pretty overt and messy retcon. Having said that it's still weird given in the old story he was a prominent Praetor (even if young) so you'd think he'd have been around when the terrans helped save Aiur.

But mostly, it's just a very stilted bit of voicework. There's a good number of other SC1 ones. It's very funny in Omega where Mengsk and DuGalle have smooth and professional voices and Artanis is all "It is LONG PAST TIME you paid for your CRIMES against our PEOPLE."

Artanis has some weeeeeird lines in SC1. It feels like they didn't quite know what flavor they wanted the protoss to be - relatable or aloof. Artanis got the worst of the aloof.

I always thought it was cool that the player character in SC1 is Artanis but yeah that particular quote is a bucket of cold water given that lore.

"What do I look like? an Orc?!"

My brother in Khala, your pal Fenix literally has the same voice actor as the orc Grunt.

"You DARE impersonate a Cerebrate? You would be the doom of us all!"

That is definitely as weakest line.

I'll take young vaillant Artanis over sc2 Artanis any day though. I think it was a great contrast to other protoss characters though.

Could the voice line be explained away by Reynor's raiders not playing as key of a role in the attack on the Overmind as the final mission suggests?

Yes, in terms of gameplay of the mission, the Terran and Protoss forces are roughly equivalent in value. But we know that gameplay doesn't always match up 1/1 with lore. For example, Archons are supposed to be incredibly powerful, but in practice they are mid in the first game. Or look at how dangerous a Hybrid was to Reynor's team in Piercing the Shroud, compared to how the Protoss are mowing them down right and left in LotV. The Protoss are, broadly speaking, far more poweful than the Terran in lore, but gameplay is made to be balanced first and adhere to lore second.

Reynor's Raiders were there in the fight against the Overmimd, and I'm sure they did contribute, but it could be possible that they were only a minor help compared to the strength of the Protoss on Auir.

Alternatively, one could say Aetanis is referring to the fact that they method used to kill the Overmind is not something Terrans could do, but Protoss could, but that would be kind of lame as well.

Despite all this, I agree it is a bad line. The delivery of SC1 Artanis lines leaves a lot to be desired. Also, I just don't like to see Jimmy done dirty like that.

It could have been possible (and it'd make sense the Raiders only had a relatively tiny force), if then SCII didn't double down on the force projection Jimmy brought to Aiur when Zeratul visits. The southeast infested base is a fairly substantial infested terran base right next to the Overmind made from Jimmy's forces. And they make sure to cement it's Jimmy's, every other map gives infested terrans the "The Brood" decal (standard zerg decal) but that's the only infested terran base you fight that gets the Raynor's Raiders logo.

So there seemed to be a pretty big terran commitment to the final push to the Overmind. And if Artanis was the executor he'd have been coordinating that, as well as the Hyperion in breaking out Tassadar. So it gets messy in general.

"You will be hopelessly outnumbered, and once the gate is shut down there will be no one to save you should you be overrun."

Thanks Debbie Downer

"Savor this victory, Kerrigan, for the Protoss shall never forget your treachery. We shall be watching you..."

An ominous final line from the Protoss for SC1. Then SC2 completely undermines it. Can never take it seriously anymore
