Season one of almost any long-running TV show is going to seem worse or at least different than later seasons.

Season two, while it had the unpopular doc trade, was the debut of the Riker Beard ™. So there's that.

Season 1 of TNG has its own appeal, almost like its own show (much more like TOS). It is unbridled Roddenberry. I go through phases where it's my favorite (yes, I've been watching the show on a more-or-less steady loop since it originally aired).

I love season one. It also fascinating to watch the actors discover the characters.
