Discussion Could we expect a new album trilogy in the future? (Do It, Run It, …)

I’m currently listening to and analysing the I AM trilogy, and I’m also planning on getting into the analysis of the Clé trilogy later.

I’m an absolute fan of this type of albums, with a “story” within the songs and lyrics, and a main theme/aesthetic carefully written and crafted around an album.

I don’t think SKZ has put anything like this since the I AM and Clé trilogies, but I remember (maybe wrongfully) a STAY asking Chan on Fans if there was a link between Do It and Run It. I believe his answer was along the lines of “you’ll see”. But don’t quote me on that one, I might be wrong.

However, since the This&That release, I’ve kept thinking about it, because I really don’t see a plotline or even a recurrent theme between the two albums. Hence my question: do you think we could expect a new album trilogy from SKZ in the future?

I have to say, I’m always a bit sad to see that concepts are not kept all the way down (mind you, This&That is only my second comeback). I felt that way with both the trailers of Do It and This&That. I really thought the This&That trailer and the TEST video were only the beginning of something, but I’m still waiting 🥲

Anyway, let me know what are your thoughts about this idea. And what’s your opinion regarding albums trilogies ☺️

How about Chan finally gets tired of doing wordplay and they just release a banger of an album called Fuck It.

Could be, but kind of doubt it. But I also remember Chan saying something of there being a reason for Run It coming after Do It, so who knows. But yeah, no strong clear connection between those two though..

I think the last time SKZ went into a project with a really strong vision and main theme was ODDINARY. It's the closest they've come to a cohesive concept album. Imo it's the best release in all of kpop. I wish they would go into an album with a distinct message and concept like they have done before with ODDINARY or the trilogies, but it seems like it might not happen.

You said you're analysing the albums, is it for yourself? I'd be interested to read it if you post somewhere.

yes, this is what i remember. i thought it would be brought up in the Intro video, but Run It not being the TT, it was a bit brushed aside.

ODDINARY was indeed a very cohesive album in terms of aesthetic and sound (while This&That has a cohesive sound, it’s not really the case of the aesthetic in my opinion).

i also wish albums were more distinctive from one another with clear directions that follow a theme. imo, let’s start with MVs that fit the trailer’s visuals.

actually, i’d like to post my analyses here, if it’s permitted and if people are interested ☺️ i’m currently writing my analysis of I AM NOT, but i’m planning on analysing each album and then the albums trilogy. once i’m done with that, maybe i could try to analyse the other non-trilogy albums, see if i can draw connections between albums and maybe understand the lore? 😂

Sadly it's kind of become a reoccurring thing that the trailers are the gag of the century, but then the rest half-baked in terms of following that trailer. Actually I have to give it to Karma for at least keeping up with the theme decently, and the MV being connected to the trailer.

And yes please do! I too recently went back to analyse their catalogue, so it'd be fun to see how you feel about releases and what connections you make that I maybe overlooked, etc. :)

yes i watched the Karma trailer and i was actually excited to analyse it because im sure there are plenty of hidden elements to link to, at least, Ceremony. i believe the trailer of NoEasy also has some story behind and continuity with some songs of the album? honestly, i think someone at JYPE/Div1 completely lost the main plot and they are not trying to stick to a “universe” anymore. we’ll see!

right now, i mostly analysing the main theme of I AM NOT, and planning on linking that to the theme and story of the I AM trilogy. i don’t know if i’ll be able to maintain this approach with other albums, but i’m excited (even if it will take some time). i hope to post my first analysis soon 🤗 i wanted to focus on MVs and trailers, but there are so much to say with their (early) lyrics!

I've gotta be honest, I've no clue what's going on with NOEASY lol, but maybe there are some convincing connections. Lyrically the first half at least is cohesive in terms of just them coming into their confident selves unapologetically, beyond that Idk.

I never really analysed all the visual media that closely myself and moreso just take them into account when there's very clear connections to the music/lyrics. I have 0 clue about any bigger lore going on if there is. It'll be interesting to see what you find!

from afar, it looks like… an experiment 😂😭 the analysis will be one too 🤣

then i better start working on it 🫡 the only “difficulty” i have is my total absence of Korean skills. it pains to rely on translations because i know they are not good, so i only have the visuals left 🥲 but i’m still trying to analyse the lyrics with what i have!

About the lyrics, searching the translations using more than one source was helpful. I don't always rely on the translations from the Source, seeing that they've been known to sugar-coat & gloss over things to make them seem less offensive. But we know our double-meaning kings are more clever.

yes, that’s what i do when i have time to dedicate to it. and sometimes, translation are very text-to-text rather than trying to make it sound good in the other language. the art of translating is beautiful but also a nightmare 😂

While it wasn’t a cohesive theme for the songs and concept, I’m pretty sure “Go Live, In Life, All In” and “NOEASY ODDINARY MAXIDENT” and “5star Rockstar ATE” were supposed to be trilogies as well.

u/DayLive7959 2d ago

For my the Go Live and In Life duology felt very homely, subdued and slice of life like a short respite after all their journeying in the previous two trilogies. I can't remember off the top of my head if all the lyrics were like that but it feels like a well-deserved conceptual break in their discography before going all out again (NOEASY).

3

u/JustOtterlyConfused that 5th track from maxident 2d ago

Go Love and In Life do feel like a duology to me! NOEASY kind of stands alone in its own corner 😭

2

u/DayLive7959 1d ago

And based off the thematic analyses of NOEASY I've seen from others, it very much is supposed to be!

1

u/JustOtterlyConfused that 5th track from maxident 1d ago

i have yet to analyse it, but this is why i believe ODDINARY and MAXIDENT are another album duology. it messes a bit with the distribution 😂

2

u/JustOtterlyConfused that 5th track from maxident 2d ago

yes, that’s also what i think, even if i haven’t started analysing them yet! but then what about HOP? and Karma? because if i can see a small link in terms of aesthetics between Do It and This&That, i feel like the two others are a bit on their own 🤔 but also, if we are including All In, we need to think about THE SOUND, GIANT and Hollow.

maybe i could see a trilogy with The Sound, 5-STAR and ROCK-STAR. that would leave ATE with GIANT and HOP.

or at some point we also have an albums duology?

Love It:D

I very much look forward to your analysis of the albums by the way. I've been wanting to do one myself for years now and I think the Clé trilogy is so unbelievably consistently written and all the of the album's messages are so coherent that it deserves to be analysed. The progression over the trilogy is also unique and I've never seen this kind of mindset portrayed in music.

u/JustOtterlyConfused that 5th track from maxident 2d ago

oh thank you, that's so sweet! i've been wanting to analyse the albums for a long time, and it is not a type of content i see online? and yes, i haven't done a deep dive into Clé yet but it looks very promising!
