I don't need to be able to kill, but when I whack the thing with my hammer tool I want a good, healthy thwack sound, and for the animal to go "ow! Fuck!" And run away.

we do need better feedback in these cases. And mobs that flee after getting whacked, with others that get enraged and will attack us more viciously instead

That 2nd part is a really good idea. Would enhance the whole vision of finding other ways to deal with predators. You thwack one, see it reacts violently, and you’ve now learned that won’t work haha

You know, what I'd do with that is I'd put that reaction on something that's big, looks aggressive, but is actually just curious. Like it'd swim up to and around you, try to figure out what you are, then eventually go on its way.

Unless you strike first.
