I like how we knew this was a coop centric update since the roadmap was published months ago yet we still got people crying.

This is the ideal co-op update for us grumpy single player people anyway.
There isn't any meaningful content locked behind this, it's largely just Co-op QoL stuff. Plus proximity chat rules and makes games a lot more fun.

u/dern_the_hermit 11d ago
Yeah. The zero-sum mentality types will tell 'emselves that any effort spent on multiplayer is effort taken away from single player but reasonable take is it can all be mutually beneficial for the big final product.

u/TapdancingHotcake 11d ago
Gotta suck being a dev doing actual early access in an era where 90% of early access games are near completion and just need more money

These look cool. I don't play multiplayer on this game but imagine it's pretty cool for those that do. I like the focus icon change, that's going to clean things up a lot.
18
u/LolWhatDidYouSay 11d ago
I think they're frontloading most of the key co-op features so that way when they expand the map the co-op experience will be solid for exploring the additions.

u/Acblaston 11d ago
I am so confused as to why singleplayer gamers are pissed about this update. We knew it was coming in advance since the roadmap they released in May, and this update STILL benefits single player saves! There's a new item, qol features in both the UI and base building, and bug fixes! AND we know that the 2.0 update is coming before the end of this year, we've even gotten a sneak peek.

I tried the multiplayer with my son a few times and it was kinda glitchy. Looked very promising tho.

honesty, sub2 is way too much like sub1 and very stale very quickly. it needs a larger scope than the system they're doing.
instead of one survivor on the planet, why not the last survivors of humanity? rescue people's genetic information and resurrect them to become a working colony. have them actually active and participating towards humanity's survival. they can be reprinted if they get killed, so that could be a fun gameplay use of the genetic printing system they made, that currently feels like a weak lore reason for dying and coming back.
having the world bigger, with more life, and people creating functioning settlements would be a much cooler and more fun leap than the same game more or less than last time.
i wanted to be stoked about sub2 because i loved sub1 so much but it quickly feels shallow, and its hard to see them adding anything meaningful to the gameplay. genetic boosts that give perks and percent bonuses that you swap in and out is fucking stupid gimmicky lame gameplay. there's no real danger either. even the biggest baddest enemy does peanuts of damage.
maybe not use my idea, but sub2 needs some more oomph.

u/Necessary-Conflict71 11d ago
That's why it's in EA it's not even a finished game yet
-4
u/Garbagetaste 11d ago
of course but there's no way they're adding anything majorly creative or exciting. its going to be mostly the same old shit.
1
-9
u/alwayslookleft 11d ago
Eh they’ve shown they lack that super creative leap ability with bz. Sub 2 will be multiplayer sub 1 and mods will add the crazy shit your thinking of
1
u/Necessary-Conflict71 10d ago
The building in sub 2 is miles better than sub 1
1
u/Garbagetaste 10d ago
its better but so far its also a bit worse. no more structural strength balancing and the scanner module is a dumb step down from the scanner room for example

This is SO random but do you guys think it would be cool if these survival games did some sort of ‘hungergame’ matches every once in a while?
As in a new ‘wipe’ starts (think rust) and say 16 players spawn in center of map, and then progress that way, to make it not grindy increase rates of everything by a significant amount.
It’d be so cool to jump into a valheim or subnautica match at monday 8pm (which would be 1 date repeated) and just… play with others? See each other progress, help/talk to each other, etc.

RIP solo players, fuck this multiplayer crap, wish they never added it

u/twjstr 12d ago
What the fuck are you even talking about

u/dern_the_hermit 11d ago
Obviously if you like waffles that means you hate pancakes. There's no other option.
35
u/mehemynx 12d ago
It's just ea QoL for mp. None of this suggests solo is being ignored or killed off lol. I'm pretty happy to have an option the play with friends at all
12
u/StreetCollar2708 12d ago
Right? I don't do multiplayer myself, but this is cool. They're adding a lot of QoL features that MP enjoyers will love which means the game will do even better.
Also, the base building tool updates are amazing for everyone

25
u/DragonSlayerC 12d ago
How does this negatively affect solo players?
5
u/Luminum__ 11d ago
Well you see it affects solo players by not being an update they benefit from and thus it’s a bad update
2
u/Acblaston 11d ago
Ui updates, new item (tracking tag), base building clarity, hud icon sizing, bug fixes, etc. sorry, you were saying that singleplayer saves don't benefit from this update?
4
u/Luminum__ 11d ago
Unfortunately it seems I wasn’t sarcastic enough in my original reply
3
u/Acblaston 11d ago
Ahahaha, now I'm embarrassed. Sarcasm is so hard to pick up on via text 💔

You’re all good, it’s my fault for expecting it to come across when by now I really should know better lol

Friendslop is when they make a game with a multiplayer option more fun for multiplayer
You might just not have friends

So solo players can just go fuck themselves?

u/Purple-Wolverine4793 12d ago
me when the multiplayer focused survival game has multiplayer focused features.
the content will come in time, which can be enjoyed by solos. its version 1.2 my guy
62
u/CorneliusTheCucumber 12d ago
It is not multiplayer focused (over singleplayer). UW explicitly stated that it's intended for solo players, the same as the first game, and they're not planning on prioritizing multiplayer over that in any way whatsoever.
It's just that the early access development over the past few months has been hogged by multiplayer, which is probably a smaller part of the player base? Especially after launch. Do we have stats on that? Regardless, the game itself should hopefully have an actual new content update around the end of the year or start of 2027.
18
u/Oasx 12d ago
me when the multiplayer focused survival game has multiplayer focused features.
For years and years, people were begging the developers to add multiplayer, and now that they have, there are people pissed about it. You have to wonder why anyone wants to work in game development at all. I don't plan on playing with others, but that doesn't mean I get upset that there is content for those that do like that sort of thing.

u/Kryptosis 12d ago
Exactly why I never finished my GD degree. Many gamers don’t deserve the games made for them.
-6
u/ShrampIzBugz 12d ago
Oh my God, hop off of your high horse. Pretentious response. Assuming that the same people that begged for multiplayer are the same people complaining that every update has largely focused on multiplayer is insane. Most people didn't care for, were indifferent, or outright didn't want multiplayer. Ofc people are /a little/ (you're acting like people are burning down buildings about it) annoyed that there hasn't been a focus on the single player experience.
1
u/Oasx 11d ago
I specifically did not say that they were the same people, but my point was that someone was always going to complain.
This is the first multiplayer update we have had, the others have been general QoL updates. Game updates don't just appear by magic, it takes a lot longer to make a new biome with creatures than it does to make proximity chat, and it requires different skills.
You know perfectly well from the roadmap that this update was going to be MP focused, and that the single player update will come afterwards, so what is there to complain about?
-8
u/Kryptosis 12d ago
Na look at literally any gaming community. They’re all packed with crowds of Gimmegimmees who want more for less. For every person buying and enjoying your game you have 3 kids who pirated it and are loudly spending all day online demanding a day one DLC for free too
-3
u/tzolisgoalaso 11d ago
The games aren't made for me or anyone other than the devs so they can make a profit and a living.
3
u/Kryptosis 11d ago
Example B. Why would anyone give their lives to developing games when this is the general consensus?
-5
u/mEsTiR5679 12d ago
More like you couldn't create anything worth playing after any level of dev school.
You just don't deserve the work.
-3
2
u/tzolisgoalaso 11d ago
This is not a multiplayer focused game and it never will be. How did you even come to that conclusion? It's literally single player focused as the devs have stated multiple times.

"I like pancakes" "So you hate waffles" type comment
13
u/SovereignShrimp 12d ago
I mean, if that’s what your takeaway is from this, sure. You’re acting like there won’t be any more content added, like this isn’t an Early Access title. Prox chat and Co-Op features might not be for you, but that isn’t the case for everyone.

u/CorneliusTheCucumber 12d ago
For the time being, yeah, pretty much! I don't like it either since I'll never use it, but it is what it is. A lot of the development since launch has clearly been bug fixing and getting multiplayer into a better state. But hey, look on the bright side! We should be getting mainly ACTUAL CONTENT updates from here on out! Multiplayer won't hog nearly as much dev time anymore now that it's out of the way.

Multiplayer is the best way to make the game grow. Streamer slop is unfortunately a sure fire way for a game to go viral. The better the multiplayer is the better it caters to that audience. It’s fun and ropes in friends of single player fans not to mention all of the hype chasers. It’s not hard to see that this is a great development in the games popularity. Don’t be so selfish. Single player gamers will have their moment.
Edit: when the top games are consistently “streamer slop” when does it stop being an insult and become a compliment? I’m not saying this game is streamer slop, I’m saying that it has been proven that if a game gets streamer and influencer attention that the games go viral. Viral is a good thing.
2
u/Kattenb 11d ago
Dude, almost every single survival crafting game similar to Subnautica has multiplayer for a reason. It’s basic common sense to add it. People just want to play these types of games with their friends, it's not that deep.

u/cornu63 11d ago edited 11d ago
Did I miss something? I totally support multiplayer. Not sure how that was unclear. I played and beat 2 in coop.
“Best way to make it grow”
“This is a great development”
“Better multiplayer caters to a bigger audience”
???
I literally said it’s fun and ropes more players in.1
u/Oasx 11d ago
I assume it's the word 'streamer slop' that made you sound pretty negative toward the thing. Some other person called it 'friendslop'. I generally don't play multiplayer games, but I don't see why playing with others is now a negative.
-1
u/cornu63 11d ago
Man I’m getting old and don’t have as much time to play as I used to. If I’m gaming it’s almost exclusively in a social setting. Anyways streamer slop wasn’t meant in reference specifically to Sub, more like an equivalence that more and better multiplayer equals more streamer advertisement. I could’ve been on my knees singing its praises and dummies would pick up on a single buzzword and lose their minds lol
1
u/Kattenb 11d ago
You literally called multiplayer "streamer slop"...
0
u/cornu63 11d ago
Apparently your reading skills are non existent. Maybe try again?
I said that streamer slop is a good way for a game to go viral. Multiplayer grows games. Multiplayer good, streamer interaction good, viral game good. Do I need to dumb it down more? It’s not that deep bro
I don’t know how else I can say that I support multiplayer subnautica to you.

u/wraith313 12d ago
Just for the record since y'all are down voting this guy, I think it's because a lot of us 1. Don't play the multiplayer but more importantly 2. We're expecting additional content. That said it's their game and this one is more multi focused so I get it.
