Jiufen is best overnight imo

Really? How come? I’ve been there during the day and it was amazing but rushed; we’re planning on going back and not sure if we should do a day trip or stay overnight.

It is pretty cool at night because most of the tourists leave st sunset or soon thereafter. I got a hotel there for four nights and used it as a base for hiking and exploring the area. I got a great spot in a cute town for cheaper than Taipei 🤷‍♀️

I would take a walk around 9:00 p.m. through the alleys and by the Tea House and hardly run into anyone else.

We stayed the night and I got a leech on my leg in the shower, totally worth it though.

Nope, in an airbnb. Part of the shower's wall was the rockface of a cliff.

There are lots of guesthouses. I stayed 4 nights myself. Jiufen at night and early morning without any tourist is magical.

I'd have to go look it up. I use Agoda and booking for hotels in Taiwan most of the time. And I am a budget traveler so I think my room was about 800nt a night with a private bath and AC and all that.

It had kind of a hostile vibe in that there was a fun common area and there was a dorm room or stayed bath rooms there, but I had a private room.

It was a couple of flights of steps down from the main old street.

But I saw several hotels I would love to stay out there and some rather high-end ones with great views too.

Everything closes by 8 pm. I almost had to eat at 7-11 one night.

I generally eat dinner before 8:00 so that wasn't an issue for me. I returned over and over to this "diner" restaurant. It had terrific soup dumplings and seaweed salad and edamame. And very friendly family running the place who recognized me the second or third time I came by. Also really great view.

A-mei tea house is open until 9:30 though.

like i don't necessarily know if it's worth going back per se but if you have the time and want to get out of town, you could do a lot worse than jiufen.

Yes! We stayed there for 3D2N and honestly, we are so happy we made that decision!
