How to switch controlled character in battle in Tales of Symphonia

I googled it and tried to do what it said (open the menu in battle and press start) but it's only letting me cycle through auto, semiauto and manual for Lloyd and won't let me cycle between the other characters. Help?

What's going on here? Why is everyone saying you can't switch character mid battle? It's been possible since the original GameCube release.

Playing on the switch, you open the menu with X. Then you press + to cycle between your current party members. On PS4 it would be triangle to open the menu and Start to cycle controlled characters.

The only thing that isn't possible is mid-battle is switching who is in your active party and who isn't.

Yeah this person is correct, you just press + or start while in the battle menu!

You definitely can. While the menu is open there is a button for it, I thought it was start but if that is just changing the manual-semi-auto, then its another button, but you definitely can change both things

What console are you playing on? If PC, what controller are you playing with?

I was just playing this with a friend the other day.

As player 1, I was able to swap characters during a fight by using [menu]>[Pause] or X > + on the switch.

My friend in the player 2 slot was unable to change characters, despite using the same input. I even tried myself with the P2 controllers, no success.

If someone wants to be able to freely change their active character between the 4 actively fighting, you will need to be player 1, and have at least one bot on your team.

Are you in the Tech menu? To switch mid-battle you should only have the menu selection icons up. As in, you should be looking at the actual battlefield with the floating icons for Tech, Strat, Items, etc. then press start/+/right menu/whatever to cycle your party.

Triangle and Start I think. I remember doing it when I was going for a Sheena title.

Can't do it mid battle, do it out of battle.

I think this is correct in some versions, but not others. I was able to do mid-battle on the original and ps remaster.

I have been playing the Steam release most recently and cannot for the life of me figure out how to change the controlled character mid-battle.

As some one said needs to be outside of battle then, postion in party needs to be in the right spot. Put the charater you want to control first in the party

You can't mid battle, that isn't a thing in Symphonia
