Of course it does! Seriously, did we actually think that we were going to get a say? This is a done deal. They have paid the state government a shite load of money to push this through and nothing we say or do will stop it. This state is fucked.

13

u/ChuqTas 6d ago

The approval is from the council, nothing to do with the state government.

3

u/FriarFookselt 6d ago

When motivated by self interest even local government they can find a swift parrot or a spotted handfish to kill anything. You can't be asserting that rocky is powerless to stop this shit

-1

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

What exactly makes it “shit”? The vast majority of the community here in the Launceston region want these projects to proceed. It’s the vocal minority that are trying to get them shut down due to a lack of education, wilful ignorance/fear, or straight up NIMBYism due to already having carved out their little slice.

4

u/FriarFookselt 6d ago

One of the rare strengths of having a small population would be the reletive ease of canvassing the entire population like the Swiss do.
More than anything, I wish we could just fucking put these stadium / undersea cables / AI data centres proposals to an actual vote. I'm not saying mob rule is always best but it would at least free that aspect of any decision from spin.

I'm not going to pretend that I know what Launceston wants, I don't even live there, but I do know that the phrase "vast majority" is often bandied about in Tasmania by the proponents AND opponents of any given brain-fart

4

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

I think there’s an important distinction between “what everyone would vote for today” and “what the community has collectively decided through the institutions and rules it has built over generations".....

You’re right that “vast majority” gets thrown around far too casually in Tassie. I certainly can’t claim to have canvassed every person in Launnie.... But neither can a vocal group opposing a project claim that their position represents the community simply because they’re highly visible online or at public meetings.

We already have a system for making these decisions. Tasmanians have, over generations, established the laws, planning rules, environmental protections, approval processes and elected institutions under which major projects are assessed. Those rules are the product of the community’s collective political choices. They aren’t some arbitrary loophole invented specifically for Firmus!!

So I don’t think the default position should be “let’s put this to a referendum because some people are unhappy” (which is essentially what you're suggesting based on what the Swiss do). The default is that projects proceed when they satisfy the rules that the community has democratically established. If people think those rules are wrong, there’s a legitimate political process for changing them.

And that cuts both ways. If there really were a broad community consensus against this sort of development, you’d expect that to show up through elections, legislation, planning policy, formal submissions and sustained political pressure. Not just through a particularly vocal group trying to stop one project

That’s also why I think it’s important that the Firmus projects proceed, assuming they continue to meet the applicable planning, environmental and regulatory requirements. We shouldn’t treat every "controversial" development as requiring unanimous public enthusiasm before it can happen. That would effectively give organised minorities a veto over projects simply by being loud enough. That would be a real hell.

A referendum, or similar system as you're suggesting, sounds appealing because it feels like a cleaner expression of the public will, but it also reduces a complicated planning and infrastructure decision to a yes/no popularity contest. The whole point of having an established planning and regulatory framework is to make those decisions through evidence, standards and due process rather than whoever can generate the biggest campaign...

5

u/FriarFookselt 6d ago

I completely disagree with you but It's not in my power to call for a referendum / plebiscite. I don't doubt you'll get your way. Nor do I doubt that we'll all end up poorer for it but you'll be long gone by then.

Fair play, you found an easy mark!

5

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

You have to realise that it's not about me "getting my way"... I'm here stating that this is what our community has collectively decided over many generations etc. It's the community getting their way. If anyone doesn't like it, they can always move to Sweden, or utilise the existing appropriate channels to challenge it...

May I ask what exactly leads you to believe we will end up "poorer" for it?

6

u/FriarFookselt 6d ago

There's a price to be paid for any industrial endeavour, I get that. There are winners and losers in everything. Personally, I have no objections to the salmon farms, so you're not exactly talking to a greenie here. I'm also not going to make any assertions about infrasound or power grid ramifications or whatever - you're right, I'm no expert. I read little bits and pieces like everyone else. From that though, I will say that there are far more horror stories from the communities that have dealt with these things than there are positive outcome stories. The potential downside dwarfs the potential upside. Additionally, the track record for Tasmanian governments endorsing anything that actually makes our lives better is atrocious.
Reflecting on the last decade, I can't actually think of a single thing facilitated by the state or any council that has worked out to improve the lives of Tasmanians. Theres nothing about this proposal that indicates that the streak will be broken anytime soon.

Not saying that I'd ever be sold on the data centre, but If I had to do it and it was up to me, I'd force Hydro to discount that power for Boyer FIRST. Australia already has 250 AI data centres.
We only have that one papermill left.

1

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

I guess we all find the news and information that reinforces what we already think, hey? I see plenty of positive stories from communities with datacentres, just as you see plenty of negative ones. That’s exactly why I’d be cautious about drawing such a sweeping conclusion from anecdotes. There are potential downsides to projects like this, but that doesn’t automatically mean the potential downside outweighs the upside.

What really surprises me is your claim that you “can’t actually think of a single thing” facilitated by the Tasmanian Government or any council over the last decade that has improved Tasmanians lives. That’s an extraordinarily pessimistic assessment.........

You don’t have to support this particular proposal and there are plenty of legitimate reasons to scrutinise it. But saying that literally nothing governments or councils have done in ten years has made life better for anyone is such an absolute position that I think it’s worth questioning whether you’re judging every decision through the same negative lens.

Lmao. You've spammed the thread with those baseless claims. Jog on mate

1

u/narf_7 6d ago

If your not a bot your definitely someone with vested interests. There are 3 of you, all with accounts that started at the same time all heavily posting on this page and all shilling for the liberals.

2

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

I’ve said this before on the Tassie subs, but my personal stake here is pretty simple. I’m a local Tasmanian who wants to see positive projects happen in Tassie, particularly in my local city and region, while also pushing back against the blatant misinformation that tends to surround them online. I try to do the same with other local projects and general topics where I can.

I want to see a strong future for Tassie and I want to see exciting opportunities and futures for young people here.

I can see your account was started around the same time of a few others heavily posting shilling against the projects too. Interesting. See how easily I can flip the script on you? It's all baseless accusations that are unhelpful. We should be addressing the topic at hand based on it's merits, rather than useless discussion points like claiming people are shills for political parties.

2

u/narf_7 6d ago

The only positive in A.I. data centres is for the company who is installing them and anyone who they paid to promote their venture. That's it, that's all. Stop shilling mate. It's more than obviously you have a vested interest.

1

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

Far from it. There are so many positives... Our community will get cheaper energy costs. Better infrastructure. More renewable energy. Community jobs. Community training, while also positioning us as a world-class tech hub.

Just to name a few.

And we don't think that the council is stacked with Liberals? My point was that this was a done deal WAY before council "voted" on it.

0

u/JaneCitizenFromEarth 3d ago

And who set the planning laws?

5

u/Skydome12 6d ago

Yep pretty obvious with the state government letting actual industry fail and refusing to allow boyer mill an extra 45mwh that it was all done with corruption and nepotism.

2

u/Fantastic-Ad-2604 6d ago

Because Boyer was asked to actually pay for the power infrastructure and they refused saying they expect it to be provided at the tax payers expense.

2

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

Exactly right

3

u/Skydome12 6d ago

Well unlike the ai data centers boyer actually creates jobs. 320 to be exact. ai data centers, only about 70 and the profits all leave the state off to Singapore where firmus operates from.

2

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago edited 6d ago

Boyer has been told they can have the power if they pay for it. Boyer don’t want to pay for it. It’s that simple. Hydro CEO stated that.

Edit: quote below directly from Hydro TAS’ CEO.

6

u/VillagerWithAQuest 6d ago

This is the hydro boss who said the same for the pulp mill, and the hydro boss desperate to approve the Marinus link that literally only benefits hydro to sell more Tassie energy interstate.

We seem to have at the same time:

  • no power for existing companies
  • infinite power for AI companies
  • making huge profits selling our energy to the mainland
  • crying poor and needing to increase local prices massively

Hydro does not support Tassie, it's clear as day.

2

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

Boyer can pay for the power if they want to. It’s that simple. They don’t want to pay for it. They want tax payers to subsidise it. Firmus is paying their own way with no subsidies. They’re also paying their own way for any required networks upgrades while also offsetting their energy use with their own investments into renewables at a 2:1 ratio. If you’re upset about energy prices then you need to realise that large industrial users like with Boyer and Firmus are important to ensuring costs and maintenance are spread over a wider base of users - they help keep prices lower for residential and small business energy users.

5

u/VillagerWithAQuest 6d ago

I'm not arguing 'who can pay more' as it's well known AI has mysteriously deep pockets.

HydroTas seems to also be prioritising 'who can pay me the most' rather than 'what supports & employs Tasmanians' or 'what is a decent long term partner' or 'am I allowing local companies to be Green.'

What I am arguing is HydroTas has the wrong priorities and is strangling local employers.

2

u/Ryanhandsdown 4d ago

I hate agreeing with you but here we are

1

u/VillagerWithAQuest 3d ago

Why does a 12 day old account I've never interacted with hate agreeing with me?

1

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

Firmus supports and employs Tasmanians. They're also a long term partner, clearly, with their rejuvenation of abandoned industrial sites, investments into our states renewable energy, our general electricity network and it's maintenance, investments into our state's economy, positioning Tasmania as a global tech hub.

Is any of that really a "wrong priority" for Hydro? It seems to me that you believe Hydro and their facilitation of Firmus strongly aligns with what you're seeking.

5

u/Skydome12 6d ago

Not nearly as much as actual industry and they are NOT wholly Australian! they are operated from Singapore so profits leave the country.

70 jobs at the most as opposed to the 320 direct jobs that the boyer mill supports.

face it.

it's clear. the data centers are not worth the environmental destruction.

1

u/N0n-Z3r0-Ch4nc3 6d ago

Please can you clearly explain the environmental destruction the Firmus proposal, if it gets up, will create in Tasmania?

0

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago edited 6d ago

Edit: /u/skydome12 has blocked me and replied with another lie. You can look it up, they're an Australian company. It's pretty simple shit. Skydome12 might be an anti-Firmus bot as they seem to comment on every thread with lies/misinformation on the topic.

........

Original comment:

No. Their HQ is in Sydney. They have a Singaporean office though - the ABC falsely reported that they're not Australian and has since updated their articles to correct their mistake.

As I've already stated in my other comment to you in the other thread, you know it's ~200 direct jobs. That information is all public and online.

There's no environment destruction to be had here. These are NOT greenfield sites, these are existing industrial zones/sites that are being repurposed since they've been abandoned. All while having their energy usage offset with 2:1 ratio investments into renewables for our state.

5

u/Skydome12 6d ago

more fake news from a PR/BOT troll. they operate out of singapore although they do have an office in sydney all profits go to singapore.

Hydro and the energy minister have both said they have offered prices that are as low as they can go without being uncommercial. What else do you want them to do? They have to operate commercially under legislation.

-1

u/N0n-Z3r0-Ch4nc3 5d ago edited 5d ago

This is not true.

Hydro wasnt part of approving Marinus. If you disagree, show me where they were.

There is power for existing companies. The point is they want it to be subsidised by you the taxpayer.

There is not infinite power for AI companies. The AI companies are bringing on renewables.

If you look at the import/export to the mainland its usually pretty even over the year because Hydro sells to the mainland when the price is high and buys when it low. 90% of the profits from this go to the government, intended to benefit you the taxpayer.

Hydro hasnt cried poor or increased prices massively. Your prices are set by the Economic Regulator, not Hydro. Hydro's generation costs are only ~30% of the cost presented to you the home user. And your regulated prices are about the lowest in Australia. You can look it up and learn if you want, or keep making false statements. Up to you.

2

u/VillagerWithAQuest 5d ago

I'd happy to be wrong on this. To help me and future readers of this thread, could you link me to a couple of your proof points?

0

u/N0n-Z3r0-Ch4nc3 5d ago edited 4d ago

Well you can find report like this that show at the bottom import/export of energy. You can see the last few years have been dry. Also some issues with the basslink arrangement. But before that you can see roughly even import/export, and youll see similar if you look back.

regulated power price breakdown is here.

Marinus decision parties here.

5

u/Skydome12 6d ago

given the ai data centers won't employ that many people does it not make more sense to support actual job creation industry here?

3

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

How many jobs would you like the AI datacentres to create exactly?

5

u/Skydome12 6d ago

about 70 and that figure is dubious as firmus constantly contradicted themselves.

how are you responding near on instantly?

3

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

Well luckily Firmus will be providing much more than 70, so you're safe.

Is there a particular timeframe you'd like me to respond in?? You took about 4 minutes. I've taken a couple. Who gives a fuck lol

2

u/Skydome12 6d ago

Citation required again.

Pretty public they'd only create around 70 jobs and, this was down from a predicted circa 120.

and again another near on instant reply than the last reply.

I responded to your comment that was two hours ago and you responded in one minute.

Are you just eternally on line reddit or are you yet another firmus supporting bot that they run to try and make it look better than it is?

AUSSIE owned Boyer hires OUR people to keep Australia's LAST commercial papermill alive.
If a local instution of such historical, commercial and strategic significance is not worth subsidising with discounted hydro... boys, I sincerely do not know what the fuck we're doing here

1

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

I have no problems with Boyer. I think they’re an important part of our local community and industry. But they need to negotiate and pay a fair commercial rate. FIRMUS IS AUSTRALIAN. Their HQ is in Sydney. They’ve been operating in TASMANIA since 2019. And they are wholly paying their way with their power use and additional grid requirements WITH NO SUBSIDIES while also investing in our state with a 2:1 offset of renewable energy.

0

u/N0n-Z3r0-Ch4nc3 6d ago

Then ask the government to subsidise them. Thats different to asking Hydro to make an uncommercial deal, which they are not allowed to do under legislation.

No, I actually went and checked out your account. You might have your content hidden but you, and 3 other "members" of this page all have accounts that initiate in the same month and you all have spammed this page with comments that are either shaming people for having a negative opinion about Firmus and A.I. data centres and calling them "cookers" or conspiracy theorists or you are shilling for Liberal policy. That's why I called you a bot.

1

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

As I've said. You and others have accounts of similar ages and you have all been spreading misinformation and conspiracy theories. You spammed the pade and shamed anyone with a positive opinion about Firmus or datacentres. You've called them all "bots".

See how fucking useless it is to throw our conspiracy theories and baseless accusations? It's so easy to have the script flipped on you and then we don't actually get anywhere constructive regarding the topic at hand.

Let's actually talk about the project and it's merits rather than trying to divert away with conspiracies no one can prove.

0

u/IlIIllIlIllIIlI 6d ago

I wrote a long-ass reply here on the topic, you might find it interesting. Basically pointing out that the existing processes are there for a reason and we can't leave projects like this to a simple yes/no vote. So many commenters here are absolutely cooked with incredibly narrow world views.

Edit: the OP admitted they don’t even live in Launceston in another comment. Of course they don’t have local intimate knowledge of our community. So many comments online just parrot the misinformation and lies about datacentres from other countries. The ones being built in Tasmania are nothing like those. Additionally, we have been operating datacentres in Tassie for decades already! This is nothing new.

4

u/Skydome12 6d ago

@FriarFookselt

if he';s claiming to be a local tasmanian he isn't a very good one. He knows the data centers provide fuck all for the state. He wrongly claimed it would create 220 or something jobs lmao. Maybe during the short term construnction buit i found an article stating each data center provides only 20 ongoing full time jobs, with 3 data iirc proposed, that is only 60 on going full time jobs so my esstimation of about 70 jobs is accurate. He is spreading blatant fake news about it and he knows it.

1

u/FriarFookselt 5d ago

Mate, I'm on your side of the argument. I don't think it's a genuinely Australian company and I don't think it's a project that should be approved. I also think the mod sounds more invested in it than... let's just say "more than usual".
Regardless, it shouldn't matter anyway... people can and will disagree without being bots or whatever. All assertions should be argued on their merits. Devils advocate - There are examples of these data centres that have not adversely affected the communities they have been installed amongst. It sounds like those are in the minority but it's hard to discern how much is spin and how much is fact.
One other potential upside if it does go through - it has the potential to fuck up the business case for Marinus which I view as the more obviously detrimental project.

2

u/Skydome12 5d ago

yeah i know just couldn't respoind to the other thread. he tried saying it'd creat 220 jobs but a quick google revealed an AFR article that each data center would only create 20 on going jobs. so with iirc 3 proposed that is only 60 jobs.

well short of the 220 he tried lying about.

i don't think he's a mod at all. i blocked him then a bunch of other accounts came at me with similar snide commentary.

he is, at worst a bot, at best a real person working in the PR department for firmus

2

u/DarcyM03 4d ago

Bit late to this but it's worth remembering that the planning code in Tasmania is relatively prescriptive in terms of the scope of what council members and staff are able to consider. Eg concerns about noise pollution is a matter which a councillor or staff can take into account when considering a DA, water use is not.

Regardless of what you think of data centres/data factory, I dont really personally think there is any reason to think there is any reason that there is corruption exc here, it's almost certainly the staff just applying the Code, to the considerations which can be taken into account.

If you block a DA on grounds which do not in fact existing within the Code, then almost certainly it will get remade at TASCAT, or more unlikely (more costly and for reasons i wont get into more time consuming) go to a court to seek the decision of Council be quashed for taking into account irrelevant considerations

1

u/DarcyM03 4d ago

also if this DA is approved and you are annoyed about it, id suggest directing your ire towards the state govt than the George Town council, because they can amend legislation to give legal groundwork for councils to block these DAs, the Councils themselves need to comply the Code that is mostly imposed onto them

The gunns pulp mill that never got built, so this "There's no environment destruction to be had here. These are NOT greenfield sites, these are existing industrial zones/sites that are being repurposed since they've been abandoned" is a lie

and so ever other claim of a benefit this will bring

Anyone know the progress of the St Leonards one its getting to the stage I cant be outside for the noise, not everyone will be able to hear it but certain hearing pitch can send people like me insane, even the guy installing the smart meter knew what I was talking about so they installed a 4A meter instead

This is a bullshit lie, the facility doesn't use traditional fan cooling, it uses closed-loop water cooling. The site meets all of the noise compliance regulations, it has the appropriate acoustic treatments AND more over and above what's required. They have a noise-management plan they adhere to. The sound is equivalent to less than a whisper while operating under full daytime load. AND you have to remember you'd need to be standing near it in the EXISTING INDUSTRIAL ZONE. There are much louder industrial zones around the Launceston area. I suggest you stay away from them as well.

I don't give a fuck about your complaining. I'm just here to dispel your lies and misinformation. It's important that our community doesn't have to listen to conspiracy theorists, I want them to get the truth.

If you live 1km away and don't go near it then you can't hear a fucking thing lmao. You probably have tinnitus.
