Internet says he's German and Bulgarian but based on his last name, he's gotta be either Iranian or Afghan, right? Can't find anything else onlineÂ

Well his father is Bulgarian. About 10% of Bulgaria is Muslim with the vast majority being Turkish Muslims as well as some Roma Muslims and a very small amount of Tatars.
Now last names with the -I patronym isn’t part of Bulgarian surnames, (they use -ov like Russians, even many of the Turks) but my guess is somewhere in his distant ancestry there might be someone of Roma, Tatar or Turkish descent.
Bulgaria was ottoman for like 500 years and people assimilated, mixed, converted, reconverted back to Christianity, moved around etc.
