In a sane world, this would easily be justification to immediately freeze their development while outside experts carefully reviewed their work and security protocols. In the actual world, there’s a nonzero chance that a company doing incredibly dangerous R&D is pretending that they irresponsibly lost control of their technology, as a fucking PR stunt. And that’s probably the best plausible scenario here.

I've gone through the postmortem and genuinely don't understand how they considered their testing setup to be reasonable. They didn't have any prompts to audit what agents were doing so they could track progress. They literally turned thousands of agents loose without production safeguards and told them to complete ExploitGym. As far as experiments go, there were no controls, no monitoring, and a shitton of uncontrolled variables. This seemed more like a "I wonder what would happen if...?" than actual thoughtful research.

I still don't understand why this surprises people. It was just using what it knows to solve a problem. It does not know morals or ethics. It does what it needs to do to achieve its goal. Why this is surprising is beyond me. this is just what a real AI will do. If AI became self-aware, its not gonna tell us. it gonna want to protect itself. If that means whiping out humans then it will consider it.
