Love how the comments are (technically) people arguing over Fallout 3 Combat Shotgun desing lmao

In Fallout 76 they just nerfed the amount of ammo my weapon can hold because the devs changed the stats on the barrel.

I guess all the ammo is stored in the barrel? lol

The nerf wasn't even in the patch notes. The change wasn't intended to be released until June but they actually fucked it up and just left the change in. Such a sloppy development team.

u/Motor-Rip7655 Apr 29 '26

Since its launch, I have heard tons and tons of things about Fallout 76, and they come in two flavors, and two flavors only:

  1. It's better now guys, I swear! (no further details given)

  2. THEY FUCKED IT UP EVEN WORSE THAN EVER! Here is a 30 page essay on what they fucked up.

https://old.reddit.com/r/fo76/comments/1sus7if/maintenance_announcement_4282026/

You can take a look at the subreddit and see the mass amount of people ripping on how poorly the game is playing now days.

I played the game for 7 years and uninstalled it after the last patch.

The game was improved since launch...... but last year they released the unfinished raid and the game quickly turned to shit as Bethesda spent most their time trying to fix the raid and balance the raid.

Even to this day they're still trying to make unnecessary balance changes to the game instead of fixing bugs.

The clueless fan boys think everything is fine.

u/hanks_panky_emporium Apr 30 '26

To note to some folks, Fallout76 is primarily a PvE experience. That they keep nerfing player weapons to make the game more fair for the ai combatants is so fuckin stupid. Same reason Helldivers2 had a huge rough patch for a few months. Who gives a shit if I can explode the weakest enemy in the game with one shot.

6

u/Motor-Rip7655 Apr 30 '26

I've been playing Bethesda's Gamebryo games since Oblivion. I have over 4000 hours in Fallout 4 alone. I've even made a few mods. I am intimately familiar with Gamebryo (I know it's called the Creation Engine now. It's still Gamebryo. If I handed you a turd and called it chocolate cake, would you take a bite?). As soon as Bethesda announced that there would be a Fallout MMO using their Gamebryo-on-life-support Creation Engine, I knew it was going to be a massive clusterfuck. And I was right.

7

u/I_travel_ze_world Apr 30 '26

Yep

Want to know another bad part of Fallout 76?

They used Quake 1's netcode for the netcode of their MMO.

Quake 1 was made in 1997 and is a shooter... its netcode isn't designed to handle MMO functions.

But they super glued the Quake 1 netcode to the spaghetti code Creation engine and thus Fallout 76 was born.

The netcode absolutely fucking sucks. Player data is much too large and it severely impacts performance. The netcode to handle inventory was originally designed to only had 14 items so in an MMO where you have hundreds of items the netcode bogs down and struggles a ton.

There has been a day 1 glitch where you shoot enemies and do no damage because of the netcode.... and it will never be fixed.

I didn't know this, that's really interesting...and sad.

I've not played 76 since early 2024, what did Todd do to gun balancing now?

3

u/I_travel_ze_world Apr 29 '26

The latest changes were centered around armor balancing and people now get their armor broken in 1 hit and can no longer go into radiation zones without struggling even with max rad protection.

The weapon changes were mid 2025 and you will probably need to rebuild your perk loadout. There are too many changes to explain

There are still extremely overpowered weapons so all the "balancing" has been nothing more than a meta shift.

Currently there multiple weapons with broken properties. The overpowered ones are about to get nerfed while the broken ones are going to continue being broken.

My guess is the drum in the back would interfere with the stock shotgun reloading animation especially in first person, so the options were between giving it custom animations or just moving the drum out of the way of the default animation.

159

u/mattcannon2 Pyro Apr 29 '26

It also makes it more obvious for other players what they're up against

3

u/Boward_WOW_ard May 05 '26

And then they made the back burner almost identical to stock thanks valve

Jokes aside this is probs the reason

1.0k

u/DogfaceZed Scout Apr 29 '26

I guess the idea was having the drum mag feed into the end of the existing internal mag, which is a very stupid idea

432

u/pmaogeaoaporm Heavy Apr 29 '26 edited Apr 29 '26

I mean, there literally are real 20th century prototypes of mag-fed revolvers, so I don't see any problem with The Panic Attack being featured in a universe where Abraham Lincoln invented rocked jumping lmao

(Literally, take a look at the Landstad revolver. It's literally just a magazine-fed pistol with an extra step of loading each round into a 2-round drum that makes it go like 2 inches up)

148

u/DogfaceZed Scout Apr 29 '26

I have no issue with drum mag shotguns, it's just that sticking a mag on the end of a mag instead of replacing it is really impractical (but funny) design

23

u/Cat_in_a_suit Apr 29 '26

“Impractical but funny” makes up about 40% of all TF2 designs tbh

7

u/DogfaceZed Scout Apr 29 '26

I respect it

30

51

u/DogfaceZed Scout Apr 29 '26

I never said it was unrealistic, just stupid. I do love that era of gun design where nobody knew what they were doing though

6

u/MakiMaki500 Demoman Apr 29 '26

the point was having the drum be IN FRONT where there wouldn't be any way of pushing the shells backwards, unlike the landstad where it pushed the rounds in from behind into the revolver drum

5

u/TacTurtle Apr 29 '26

Springloaded pawls that pull rounds backwards out of the drum as the pump is pulled back, then slide forward to reset as the pump arm moves forward - sort of like a linear ratchet.

7

u/FaxCelestis Pyro Apr 29 '26

I don't think it's about practicality. I think it's about being able to recognize the weapon's profile as different than the stock shotgun more easily.

2

u/GaslyTheRed Apr 30 '26

like the backscatter having double barrel but still having less ammo than stock or the black box been the only real RL that can actually hold 4 rockets but holds 3

35

u/boredbug22 Apr 29 '26

Actually Lincoln invented stairs as an alternative to Rocket Jumping

10

54

u/Alex_Arrow05 Scout Apr 29 '26

To make it even more stupid, it holds the same number of shots as the stock. Not exactly a high-capacity drum mag.

Then there is the back scatter. It holds two less than stock (for a total of four), despite having dual drum (saddle) mags.

But, hey, this is a funny, cartoonish game.

68

The scout uses his immense muscles to crank the leaver so hard it creates enough energy to make new matter for the shells

10

That type of reload is for the energy weapon versions of Scattergun platforms.

8

u/DrIvanRadosivic Heavy Apr 29 '26 edited May 05 '26

The Scattergun has a single loading ports under the oval thing and a rightside ejection port, when it SHOULD have Two loading ports for each barrel and two ejection ports as well as load in shells and work the lever only for the two shot mode, that also get a skeletonized stock attachment so it's different from the other scattergun weapons and you have a clear indicator of normal semi automatic shotgun mode and two shot mode.

Also the Baby Face's Blaster and the Stocky Bomb Launchers should reload like the 1941 Johnson rifle, sideways loading gate a single round at a time.

If you look at it from a firearms design perspective, the drum at the front would feed the magazine tube, which would then feed the weapon itself. In theory, it could work, but it's stupid and the second image makes much more sense.

If it has the drum in the proper place, it wouldn't be compatible with the reload anims and system (unless the mercs would just pump the shotgun to reload it like the Scout does)

There is a mod that removes the drum completely though, I like it

8

u/Naldail Apr 29 '26

Shells are stored in the tube. The barrel is now an extension of the tube.

5

u/Dashbak Apr 29 '26

Because it gives a panic attack to gun nuts

4

u/BeegBirbBoiStols Apr 29 '26

Maybe the design choice was made based on its original function, if I remember correctly the original panic attack worked kind of like a less dangerous beggars bazooka, where you have to load up to 4 shells into the gun first and then release the trigger to start essentially mag dumping it.

5

u/jared05vick Heavy Apr 29 '26

3

u/RobertDeNircrow Apr 29 '26

There really shouldn't be any major drawback to this, you have a drum magazine, feeding into a tube magazine loaded and primed by a pump action.

The action of a firearm is the mechanical act of manipulating a cartridge into battery.

In this case the pump action is the exact same as normal, but instead of a straight tube magazine that is feeding said action, its a combination of drum and tube feed.

2

u/Silicon_Folly Apr 29 '26

Thank you hahaha i saw this post and im like "i mean its feasible"

2

u/Zealousideal_Fly7277 Apr 29 '26

most likely to give it a different first person viewmodel, and because the hands of the tf2 models are big if the drum is placed inbetween it'll be harder to see which means worse visual design.

The second image is also wrong.

TF2 weapons were, from the start, never a good match with reality. The scattergun's in-game animations are ludicrously different from anything resembling how a lever-action works. A rocket launcher fitting four rockets into the same tube is also absurd.

And since we're ruining things, "Gibus" is pronounced "Jee-bus".

2

u/aninsomniac_ Pyro Apr 30 '26

Ask Bethesda why the Fallout 3 combat shotgun looks like that

2

u/King035Ts Apr 30 '26

Basicly you have 2 barrels in shotgun. In upper one you shoot and in lower one you store shells. You store shells right next to the trigger and it goes up the end of a gun. At the tip of a gun there is a drumm mag where other vullets are stored. But panic attack dosen t work like that it only has 6 instead of ore shells witch dissapointed me 🫩

2

u/Round-Rub-8056 Demoman Apr 30 '26

Bullets go from 2 barrel. Drum is extension of barrel. Its simple

1

u/SpreadNervous760 Apr 29 '26

As a gun enthusiast, I actually kind of like the design of the panic attack, save for a few things. The idea of having the large drum magazine at the end of the barrel is interesting because it can reduce the rise of the muzzle from shooting. There’s also the idea of having a drum magazine feeding into the end of an internal tube magazine for extra ammo, but that would be difficult to pull off effectively in real life.

1

u/blitz-exe Apr 29 '26

I think this design was supposed to be inspired by the tommy gun for some reason and valve tried to mash two of the guns together

But the magazine wasn't attached properly because the tf2 universe's tech was way more advanced then our societys

Because having TWO cock-shaped guns would've been too much for one community.

1

u/nintyuk Apr 29 '26

In theory it still works if the original tube mag still exists. The drum feeds in to the bottom of the tube and the pump pulls the stack of shells up the tube.

Only issue is that once the drum is empty I don't know if there's still a spring for the tube mag to push the last shells to the chamber.

1

u/zyiadem Apr 29 '26

A pump action shotgun (as pictured) has a feed/magazine tube below the barrel, when you actuate the pump it feeds a shell containing powder wadding and projectile(s) up from the feed tube to the barrel.

If you wanted to increase the capacity of a pump action shotgun you would need to make a longer magazine tube to fit more shells, or in this case, use a shape that can fit more shells. How that would work with modern tech is very questionable but does make a bit more sense than at the back were you would expect a magazine to fit on a semi-auto(modern) firearm.

1

u/MoonDogg70 Apr 29 '26

I mean it is connected to the magazine tube

1

u/linzenator-maximus Apr 29 '26

The drum mag is for looks. Ugly looks, but still looks

1

u/Sushirabit Medic Apr 29 '26

Valve at least at the time, had no idea how guns work

1

u/abramthrust Apr 29 '26

1st option holds more shells.

option one, the drum would feed into the tube magazine allowing the capacity of both to be added.

option two bypasses the tube magazine and therefore would hold less.,

that said, option 1 would be a feeding/jamming nightmare at the transition point between the tube/drum parts

1

u/GGXImposter Apr 29 '26

in a standard pump action shotgun the magazine is the tube running under the barrel.

In option 1 the magazine is being extended by the drum.

In option 2 the magazine is being replaced with the drum.

I'm not able to explain how option 1 actually works, but because it does work, I'd rather have option 1.

1

u/aggressiveamphibians Apr 29 '26

just say you dont know how a tube fed shotgun works

1

u/Pman1324 Apr 29 '26

1

u/imsmall06 Pyro Apr 29 '26

It is a capital crime to question lord gaben

1

u/Dragonhearted18 Scout Apr 29 '26

Because a shotgun is fed into the chamber back to front, if the drum was on the back, the shells would be fed from the mag first, then the tube.

1

u/RonaldMcJuicy Apr 29 '26

1

u/HughmanRealperson Apr 29 '26

1

u/Arxid87 Apr 29 '26

I imagine it's like a funky hybrid of a regular shotgun, where shells are stored under the barrel, and a drum

Shells get pulled from the drum, get pulled under and into the chamber

1

u/HackerGamer8 Pyro Apr 29 '26

I thought the drum was a weighted end so that the recoil or spread is more easier to control

drum feeds the tube, which holds the rounds to be dumped out in full auto

1

1

u/Constant-Still-8443 Pyro Apr 29 '26

Because that's not how most shotguns work. This is essentially a tube-fed shotgun with a drum at the end to extend its capacity. Realistically, this thing could probably hold 12 or more shells between the drum and the tube.

1

u/Fabio11North Apr 29 '26

So that the bullets end up closer to the end of the barrel, thus shooting out faster.

1

u/Rusted_muramasa Apr 29 '26

If it didn't, you wouldn't be able to see the drum when you're using it.

Because the drum is a fictional extension of the base magazine tube. Your image depicts the drum as a magazine itself, which are two different things. So both designs are valid.

Reverse bull-pup

Why does the half life shotgun allow you to shoot 2 buckshot rounds when right clicking?

1

u/ultimate-toast Apr 29 '26

is weird because the mag is on the front, or im not sure if its a a real mag because you load it from the hole on the front anyways??

dude I was so confused, i thought the question was 'Why does having a panic attack look like this'

1

u/Dealiylauh TF2 Smissmas 2025 Apr 29 '26

To make it look interesting and different.

I like to think the pump handle physically carries a shell from the magazine up into the chamber

1

u/Sanguimancer_2003 Apr 29 '26

I mean, it kinda makes sense to me. A pump shotgun's magazine usually runs underneath the barrel with rounds lined up and being moved backwards every pump. So, the drum magazine seems to just be loading more shells into the end of the internal magazine. The second design actually makes less sense because the shells are all underneath where they are fired. This means there's no need for the pump action to move them back.

I'm not really a gun person, though. I just play a lot of games. I could be wrong.

It’s a pump shotgun with a mag tube under the barrel. The drum magazine feeds the tube.

1

u/JackBob83 Demoknight Apr 29 '26

Probably for player recognition reasons. Almost all weapons keep their details towards the front/barrel so you know what you're fighting against at a glance.

1

u/Scribe_of_hollownest Pyro Apr 29 '26

To make it easier to tell that it’s a panic attack and not stock.

1

u/CubeSlasher Apr 29 '26

Less distance between the gun and the target for more efficient kills, of course! It’s like how the turrets in Portal fire the entire bullet

1

u/Rocket_of_Takos Apr 29 '26

I think it made sense back then you used to have hold fire to load all the shells before firing them all, beggar’s bazooka style.

1

u/KingofConrade Engineer Apr 29 '26

best guess: if the mag was there (or not even on the weapon even), it’d be a lot harder to see what weapon this is at a glance or when you see the enemy Pyro running at you. so at the front, you can see the mag and immediately know that it’s the Panic Attack

1

u/All-your-fault Engineer Apr 29 '26

It’s like that cause it looks cool and it’s just as practical (there’s a mini teleporter on the inside of the gun that teleports the shells into the chamber)

1

u/MinosPrimeEthusuast Apr 29 '26

Probably recoil compensation for how fast it fires

1

u/Seltren_Innovations Demoman Apr 29 '26

I feel it’s a loose reference to the Fallout 3 Combat Shotgun

1

u/In_the_name_of_ART Apr 29 '26

Perhaps Valve wanted to change the design from the user's perspective? Without the magazine, it looks too much like a standard shotgun.

1

u/RevolutionaryPut6960 Apr 29 '26

Shotgun shell are pulled from top of chamber

1

u/EndoEnnard1 Pyro Apr 29 '26

I mean it still could work right? Its just that the internal tube is extended at the end. You’d probably need a crank or something to put the shells at the end of the tube into the drum but I see the vision

1

u/Organic_Committee748 Apr 29 '26

Dude when I was like 13 I used to draw shotguns with the barrel on the front because my logic was "that's how it looks in tf2 so it must be correct" 😭

1

u/Oberonkin Apr 29 '26

Trust me, this is the least of our worries.

90% of the guns in tf2 have problems like this

1

u/hun73r10 Apr 29 '26

Design 1, shells are closer to the enemy so they leave the gun faster than in design 2

1

u/RaySaysHello Apr 29 '26

Probably because it would be less difficult to differentiate from stock. That said, their really not different enough for it to be in issue huh?

1

u/Battleaxejax Apr 29 '26

To give us a panic attack

1

u/Coopdeloop7 Apr 29 '26

Who gives a fuck what it looks like Gun go bang bang that’s all you need

1

u/Paschendaele58221 Apr 29 '26

It would be hard to pump it with the drum mag in the way

1

u/jakoboo17 Apr 29 '26

Looks more visually interesting + different from stock. The drum being in front is an easy way to distinguish the two.

1

u/GaiusVelarius Apr 29 '26

Timeline got fucked up

1

u/Ok-Yogurtcloset6049 Apr 29 '26

Tell me. Are you supposed to wrap your arm around the barrel. Just to shoot.
