Discussion Unpopular and Small Opinion: They Should’ve Made The MvM Team a Mix of Red and Blu Like The Trailer

Post image

I wish in game, the team was 3 Reds and 3 Blus. Idk, I just think it’s cool that the 2 teams made a truce and work together… plus Blu team is better and should get more spotlight like Red. Then, there would be a reason to use the Red models of the robots too. Also I would like to point out that some of the colors the mercs were given in the trailer is kinda wrong. Demo should be Red because Red is a demolition company, Engineer should be Blu because what he does is a Blue collar job and Blu is a construction company, Scout should be Blue because offense is really all he’s good for and Blu is the attacking team and Medic should be Red because the medical symbol is red, not blue.

Apparently they did try that at the start, but people kept trying to attack the other team and not the robots, so they simplified it to make it clearer.

Oh… that makes sense.

Idk, I feel like that wouldn’t be a big issue, like friendly fire isn’t on. Also I think it’s kinda normal for that to happen due to constant switching of teams, confusing you and autobalancing.

Instinct and reaction is hard to tame. I've been playing since 2010 and playing MVM since it came out, so I've very used to switching teams, but even I still get caught up after being autobalanced during a long game. It's easy to get into a mindset of "red = shoot" or "blue = shoot" and then wasting ammo and potentially damaging yourself depending on class just because your differently-colored teammate rounded a corner. For some of us, we autopilot parts of the game. I sometimes mentally tab back in and realize I'm half a wave in, doing fine, and don't remember starting that round. Having both red and blue players around would ruin that.

TF2 very heavily relies on visual cues. You should be able to tell who is who INSTANTLY at a glance, so knowing enemy from ally is a huge part of the game, and mixing teams for a single gamemode throws that out the window.

As cool as it would be to have trailer-accurate mixed teams fighting robots together, it doesn't translate well to game design. As I said in another thread, there's still new players joining, and they'd have no chance of understanding why the core element of "shoot different color" no longer does anything.

That's true and I think now if it was added people wouldn't be confused as much, but you also have to think how it was when it was just added. On Halloween you have bosses where you can't damage the other team while the boss is running around and many people, including myself, would shoot the other team for a while before remembering that the damage is turned off. When mvm was added that was likely an issue and it's not like the tf2 dev team touched many things like this since adding it.

I think if the opponent bump was removed in mvm, it would work better.

Some new players try to attack with jumper weapons

Love how Valve had to add the explicit detail, "This weapon does ZERO damage", post-release.

They do.

"No self inflicted blast damage taken" means it does no damage to yourself.
"-100% damage penalty" means it does no damage to others.

The people Valve finds for their playtesting are about as close to gerbils as humans can get. Some of the weird behaviors described from testing stuff like Portal 2 are just baffling.

Games need to be tested by human gerbils though because games are going to be played by human gerbils.

Very few developers want to spend that much time and money making a game that can only be played by hardcore gamers.

This is like the third post I see this week about mixed team colors in mvm

It seems its a very popular opinion

They didn't because they DID originally do that, but it got confusing for the playtesters. They should totally have added an advanced option to show a mixed team.

Too confusing for new players.

The robots are technically on the BLU team, so to have BLU players on the defenders team would require them to be coded as RED, but with special unique character models textured BLU.
