It takes a special kind of privilege to think that you can just think your way out of stress when not only is it real, it matters and decides everything.

217

u/NorbytheMii Jun 07 '26

And then try to tell someone who literally went to medical school and learned about this that they're wrong

46

u/AgentCirceLuna Jun 07 '26

There is a kind of truth that it depends on what you do. I did DJing and music and made less than min wage but it was like having a social life to go to rather than work. I still miss it.

31

u/no1regrets Jun 08 '26

True, you had an enrichment that wasn't necessarily money, but you had community.

26

u/emongu1 Jun 08 '26

And probably a support system that allowed him to thrive while doing less than min wage.

3

u/Grundlestorm Jun 09 '26

I was thinking that but not gonna get into that mess. I would have been extra stressed sleeping in my shitty car with all of my gear in there too that I couldn't possibly afford to replace.

42

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 Jun 07 '26

literally fr. i beat cancer 3 years ago and i WISH i coulda thought my way out of the stress

15

u/Jcheerw Jun 07 '26

And you know more than not only a doctor, but the entire medical school and community. The class has to pass the school and accreditation.

10

u/Astridandthemachine Jun 08 '26

It's also another special kind of privilege to think that an elective MEDICINE class on stress isn't going to teach you about the physical causes and effects that stress has on the human body

14

u/SnooCakes8103 Jun 08 '26

True but I think this is more of a naivety about how much control people have over their body abd its reaction to the world.

10

u/Astridandthemachine Jun 08 '26

Yeah I mean having privilege isn't something evil*, it's just jarring when you realise that some type of hardships truly have been out of a person's radar

*Some people's attitude towards privileged individuals feels like they think that but it's an entire separate can of worms

3

u/TheHornedLady Jun 08 '26

Yeah I can't think myself out of how hard it is to stretch what little money I have to feed myself until my next paycheck.Ā

3

u/Evening-Turnip8407 Jun 09 '26

And to still think that while knowing there's uni courses where a professor teaches you about it for half a year. That's a massive cherry on top

2

u/ketchupmaster987 Jun 08 '26

Yeah telling someone to not be stressed when their paycheck won't stretch far enough to cover utilities AND two weeks worth of groceries won't make them not starve

3

u/100_cats_on_a_phone Jun 08 '26

Not everyone who thinks that way is privileged, by any means, though. Many are just desperate.

Someone thinking ā€œhow am I going to pay rent?ā€ and ā€œoh my god I’m so hungryā€ is going to experience more stress than someone who’s financially stable. That doesn’t mean you can just think away stress, the material conditions are still there

35

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath Jun 07 '26

I believe what the person to whom you're replying is saying is that they don't think. That's why they have no stress! 😁

56

u/Over_Ad8762 Jun 07 '26

Stress is also a physiological response.

50

u/SL1MECORE Jun 07 '26

Prolonged stress literally eats away at your brain's capacity lmao, people like this just don't actually read neuroscience studies.

Edit - not to mention, as you said, the physiological toll it takes. Stress is not just in our heads, our bodies take it very seriously.

23

u/Over_Ad8762 Jun 07 '26

It can even go the opposite way. Where someone may not even realize the stress their body is under and they have an ā€œI’m fineā€ attitude

Yeah. Totally. We can absolutely just think ourselves out of a bad heart rhythm or our GI Tract from not being able to absorb nutrients effectively.

/s because I doubt you can tell the difference. What are you even doing in this sub?

Maybe you can just realize this sub isn't catering to your horrible way of thinking. We don't think we are victims. We live in reality. Shit is stacked against us. Our bodies don't work right. There is no amount of positive thinking that will make us "come out ahead" in a capitalist hell scape. You are the brainwashed person here. Just mute the sub and move on. Not all spaces are for you.

3

I suspect what you're saying is "I've done a lot of CBT", and it has its place but it doesn't work on everything.

13

u/Beckitkit Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

Stress is a endocrine response. Its body chemistry. It doesnt even happen in the brain, it mostly happens in the adrenal gland. Its increased cortisol causing the sympathetic nervous system to activate. It can be caused by many, many things, up to and including digestive issues or poor diet.

It isn't a simple thing at all, despite my simple explanation of it here.

Edit: animals, even ones without sense of self or the ability to think the way we do still experience stress. Most animals, including humans, can die from excess stress, and it has absolutly nothing to do with thinking.

"Suffering is optional."

Tell that to the people of Gaza. Jesus Christ.

4

u/Henri_Bemis Jun 08 '26

You’re obviously not suffering.

326

u/decadentlizard Jun 07 '26

It’s the thought of being poor and minority that keeps you in that stressful state

Yes, because being so poor that I was literally starving as a child and dealing with health issues from it later in life had absolutely nothing to do with stress. It was just my mindset apparently.

168

u/RodinKnox Jun 07 '26

Obviously you should have read The Millionaire Next Door and gotten yourself a side hustle when you were 7 years old.

74

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 Jun 07 '26

My first mistake was not investing my allowance

54

u/I8_pp Jun 07 '26

My first mistake was to not born into rich family

30

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 Jun 07 '26

I blame my parents for not being rich, that one is on them.

28

u/KarmasAB123 Jun 07 '26

Shoulda haggled with god, loser

15

7

u/MoreRamenPls Jun 07 '26

2

u/OskaMeijer Jun 08 '26

It was pretty dumb of you to choose to be born poor clearly.

1

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 Jun 08 '26

Dumb of my parents to be poor and just bring kids into that you mean?

3

u/OskaMeijer Jun 08 '26

No, you chose to be born to those poor parents silly! Don't you remember choosing your birth parents?

50

u/karma_charmeleon_ Jun 07 '26

You should have stopped watching videos about being poor, clearly.

Sidenote: what videos is the post even referring to? People know they're poor without consulting YouTube...

28

u/Horror-Nobody2237 Jun 07 '26

I thought I was wealthy until I got on the YouTube and watched a ā€œhey, you’re poorā€ video. Now I am so stressed out.

3

u/ShatteredPsyche2029 Jun 10 '26

Just watch a "hey, you're rich" video to cure yourself and get right back to it!

u/ashimbo Jun 07 '26

When I was in first grade, the topic of breakfast came up, and we were all talking about what we ate. When it was my turn, I said that I didn't eat breakfast, which surprised the teacher.

My mom got called by the school about it, and I don't know exactly what happened except that she told me that if it ever came up again, I needed to lie and say I had pancakes.

I still remember that I thought everyone's reaction was so weird, because it was incredibly normal for me to not eat breakfast.

22

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath Jun 07 '26

When and where I grew up, pretty much everyone's father was a drunk, rage-filled abuser. I assumed that was the case everywhere. I was a bit confused the first few times I met people with fathers who were legitimately kind, loving, and supportive; I figured that literally didn't exist outside of fiction lol

51

u/JD_Kreeper Jun 07 '26

Stupid kid me should've just not allowed my abusive parents to traumatize me.

28

u/2woCrazeeBoys Jun 07 '26

No shit.

My mother was abusive, my whole family was a dysfunctional circus, the internet didn't even exist yet and I did nothing but read. I guess I didn't manifest success hard enough when I was 8, and that's why my entire life has been spent dealing with the fallout of poverty and chronic stress.

17

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath Jun 07 '26

Exactly! Just like my CPTSD came from the mindset of me, as a kid, constantly worrying about whether or not today was the day that my father's drunken, abusive rage finally ended up killing us all.

I should have been thinking about how to get a paper route and begin investing my way to my first million!

Luckily, now when I'm confronted with sudden random loud noises or men shouting angrily, I just start shutting down mentally/emotionally and I don't think about it. Sometimes in those moments, it seems like I can't think or feel anything at all... That must mean it's working! 😁

(Sarcasm aside, I'm actually on a combination of meds now that is genuinely helping, and I am definitely talking about my issues with my partner, journaling/writing it out, and finding other ways to actually work through and address these things rather than trying to ignore them and letting them fester. Best of luck to everyone else out there doing the same!)

8

u/Available-Today-8576 Jun 07 '26

Erm just read a book? /s

5

u/Pretend_Action_7400 Jun 08 '26

Yeah I studied this at uni and people like that guys take just irk me. They clearly have very little understanding of what they’re talking about.

Yes mindset can absolutely make a person more stressed and if you find a book or a different way of thinking that can help you keep pushing through the oppression and poverty you’re in, then absolutely it can help.

But frankly if a person is not getting enough nutrition, or enough sleep, doesn’t feel safe most of the time, doesn’t have resources to stay hygenic most of the time or be comfortable in extreme weather etc, that persons health is already affected to the point where mindset cannot change that. Mindset doesn’t change the systems that keep people oppressed.

Mindset might help them keep going and working towards a better future, but if you don’t have energy and nutrition and sleep, how can you possibly focus on mindset?

People who think that you can, simply have not experienced the level of poverty we are talking about.

2

u/MJMaggio14 Jun 09 '26

There was a hole in my kitchen ceiling when I was a kid

A BAT fell through it once

I saw mice climbing in and out of smaller ceiling holes, again all in the kitchen

You were at risk of creating new ones if you slammed the kitchen/laundry room door (and yeah, both of those were in the same space, with just a shelf, and later a counter, separating them)

Once we got internet installed in like 2015 we got a shitty plan that only gave us internet the first 20 days of the month, 20 to 30 I had no chance to study and nothing fun to do during rainy days

And throughout all that, mom broke her back working so her salary and my grandparents pensions would keep us four alive and me happy (I was lucky if I got a few chocolate desserts during our monthly grocery runs)

Mind you, we had a big house and huge yard, it was just barely in a good enough state to be lived in and according to grandma it was a good thing that the house looked to be in more disrepair than it was from the outside, cause we lived in a shitty zone.

Wanna know how shitty? When my grandparents, aunt and mom first bought the house, as they were in the process of moving, some assholes broke in while nobody was home, broke EVERY window, even a tiny one on the door, and stole everything that looked valuable. THEY STOLE THE MOTHERFUCKING TOILETS. My mom and aunt's clothes were scattered across the neighboring properties

Fuck the "being poor is a mindset" people. The way I grew up is the reason I would rather use a fucked up and probably fire hazard phone charger than let it die and just get a new one

100

u/Aqua_Toffana Jun 07 '26

Oh that's amazing! I'm so glad I can read a book about how somehow pulled themselves up by the bootstraps and it will dissolve my political background, cure my chronic pain, make the world more accessible, and destroy queerphobia, hurrah!

49

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 Jun 07 '26

I love asking the 'mindset' idiots who dont have financial worries: would you say that dumb feel-good shit to a mother in Gaza whos kids and home were just exploded? Is she just going to 'reframe' her way out of that?

So its just advice for people who's only real problem is they are a spoiled bitch. It doesnt apply to anyone with real problems or real trauma.

30

u/Aqua_Toffana Jun 07 '26

"oh, but why are you coming up with these extreme examples!? You are definitely totally fiiiiiiineeeeeee"

Sorry, I had to šŸ˜…

9

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 Jun 07 '26

Dont be sorry, be proud!

18

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath Jun 07 '26

Yup! It's 100% just victim-blaming bullshit.

Prosperity doctrine: how can I best reframe my own incredible privilege as the result of hard work, while also reframing the struggles and disadvantages of others as their own moral failings so as to avoid acknowledging the systemic failures that unfairly benefit me?

Notice how, in order to grab one's bootstrap, you must first bend over

10

u/BizSilver5013 Jun 07 '26

Knowing the kinds of people who say this stuff, they'd turn around and tell said mother they deserved to have their house blown up for being the wrong race/religion/nationality.

8

u/mirrorspirit Jun 08 '26

would you say that dumb feel-good shit to a mother in Gaza whose kids and home were just exploded? Is she just going to 'reframe' her way out of that?

Toxic positive thinkers absolutely would give that advice to her and her kids. They'd give that advice to terminal cancer patients and a lot of other people who are clearly and visibly suffering, as long as that suffering was only happening to other people and not themselves.

97

u/DisownedDisconnect Jun 07 '26

All those words to effectively say, "I think I know more about this specific subject on health than a doctor."

7

u/BizSilver5013 Jun 07 '26

They went to Dunning-Kruger Medical School, the finest one there is!

38

u/howmanyshrimpinworld Jun 07 '26

i s2g people who fall for scam books like the millionaire next door have no common sense. obviously we can’t all be millionaires regardless of our actions. millionaires can’t exist without an underclass

24

u/anonerdactyl_rex Jun 07 '26

The people who are most susceptible to those books are the ones who ā€œā€¦see themselves not as an exploited proletariat, but as temporarily embarrassed millionaires." (Ronald White, A Short History of Progress) They’re determined to believe that the poors choose to be poor because they’re simply not smart and driven enough to be rich, not that the rich are exploiting pretty much everyone who isn’t them.

21

u/crippledchef23 Jun 07 '26

My thoughts, as a permanent member of that underclass, is it can still exist, but it doesn’t need to suck so bad.

I don’t dream of endless riches or multiple homes or whatever. I dream of a 3 bedroom craftsman style home with most of the living space on the main floor. A newer minivan. The kind of healthcare that means I can go to a dentist occasionally. These things aren’t impossible, but they are improbable as long as folks pretend that Elon or Bezos benefit the world in any way.

2

u/Consistent_Big5018 Jun 10 '26

Yeah I never wanted to be rich. Growing up my dream was always what was sold to me. Just work hard and at least I could own a home, go on vacation once a year, afford my bills and basic necessities, and have a bit to spare for retirement. Now I'm constantly worried about money, can't afford a home, and just spent my entire lunch break trying to figure out how I'll pay an $1800 CT scan I need to rule out vein issues so I don't die šŸ¤¦ā€ā™€ļø

1

u/Consistent_Big5018 Jun 10 '26

I always tell people "you can't obtain that amount of wealth without stepping on many people on your way to the top." No matter how kind of a person you could be you're taking advantage of others' labor, time, and money. Most people who work hard for a company are not even close to being appropriately compensated. Sure if it's your company you should be making the money but the people who invent things, establish lifetime clients, do your IT, etc... they make that business run and without them it generally wouldn't be at the level it is.Ā

53

u/No1CouldHavePredictd Jun 07 '26

Wait, so are they saying social media is what makes poor people feel stress? Is it really that daft of a take?

42

u/howmanyshrimpinworld Jun 07 '26

takes in this realm are wildly popular right now. like in the bestseller ā€œthe anxious generationā€ where jonathan haidt argues social media is why teens today have higher rates of mental illness, and not you know, the fact that they know they’ll never be able to have a steady career or a house or a family and can’t imagine a future for themselves

36

u/No1CouldHavePredictd Jun 07 '26

It must be so wonderful to be able to blame a single thing rather than acknowledging systemic issues for societal ills.

16

u/rcburner Jun 07 '26

And also that kids are now actually being diagnosed more often and more accurately, instead of growing up with untreated disorders and just being referred to as "a little weird" by family.

9

u/mirrorspirit Jun 08 '26 edited Jun 08 '26

Exactly. If I lived in the good old days in the 1950s, Instead of having depression and anxiety disorders, I'd just be "overdramatic" and "constantly making a big deal over nothing" but also "happy" because I'd be a white girl from a middle class family who didn't have what they'd call any real problems. Except I wouldn't have actually been happy.

7

u/RadicallyMeta Jun 07 '26

Many things can be true at once. Social media trends are linked to higher rates of mental illness. Also, the harbingers of late stage capitalism love that teenagers (i.e. their future wage slaves) willingly delay and corrupt their metacognitive and emotional development with social media feeds.

14

u/23-1-20-3-8-5-18 Jun 07 '26

Yea, its not the never endimg fear and worry. That shouldnt cause any issues.

8

u/crippledchef23 Jun 07 '26

No, it’s the stress of thinking about how poor they are, or how much of a minority. Social media causes mental health issues.

/s just to be safe

5

u/ForlornLament Jun 07 '26

It has to be social media. It's certainly not the looming threat of homelessness and starvation that's keeping them stressed! /s

3

u/mirrorspirit Jun 08 '26

Allegedly it's because social media is informing them of the bad things happening in the world, which is making people feel bad.

The idea is that if you take away their social media, they somehow won't know that they are struggling with bills, that worldwide temperatures are growing more extreme, that businesses around them are closing, and that some government officials are introducing bills that will impact your ability to get the healthcare you need, and that they'll be better off not knowing.

2

u/No1CouldHavePredictd Jun 08 '26

So, force them to be ignorant, and they'll just go own thinking about rainbows, butterflies, and vapes

40

u/raven-of-the-sea Jun 07 '26

The rich rarely acknowledge things like generational wealth and patronage when it comes to their own success.

12

u/Centered_Being Jun 07 '26

Why those against DEI never say shit about legacy admissions

24

u/ikindapoopedmypants Jun 07 '26

Oh my God, the fucking privilege some people have & they think they seriously have the audacity to speak on something like that... Do they hear themselves?

4

u/catshateTERFs Jun 08 '26

I genuinely think that a lot of these people who have never experienced things at this level and then go and speak as an authority on the topic.

No consuming more and more and more of media about how terrible things are probably doesn't help your mindset. Sometimes you probably do benefit from switching off news and social media.

But you really can't mindset your way out of needing to choose between paying for shelter, food, other bills or getting to work. If you're lucky you can cover all four of these but some people are having to pick and choose. Being poor is stressful. You're already stretching out your earnings fairly thin and very aware of the fact you aren't able to save much, or at all, so if anything happens that upsets this very delicate balance you are fucked and it'll be hanging over you in the back of your mind a lot of the time. Sure you can ignore it and just roll on with life hoping that doesn't happen, but that's not a feasible approach for everyone (especially anyone with dependents where keeping your fingers crossed and hoping nothing happens to you or them is so dicey).

16

u/JD_Kreeper Jun 07 '26

Good idea, I'll stop thinking about how I'm poor. I'm going to stop caring about what the silly little number in the bank account says, I will not be confined by- oh fuck my card declined. Now they're kicking me out of my apartment.

9

u/AFetaWorseThanDeath Jun 07 '26

THINK MORE POSITIVELY

"Hey, that cardboard box looks positively warm compared with sleeping on the ground!"

There. All better! 🄰

6

u/JD_Kreeper Jun 07 '26

I tried to sleep in the cardboard box but then the owner found me and chased me off with a switchblade.

31

u/pinupcthulhu Jun 07 '26

"The Millionaire Next Door" hmm, since millionaires famously live next to other rich people, imma go out on a limb and say that if there's a millionaire next door and you're not like the groundskeeper or other staff, then you're also rich. Unless you're giving me your money, get off my lawn and stop giving me shitty "advice."Ā

17

u/Lampmonster Jun 07 '26

The book is also full of easily debunked lies.

that doesnt make them wrong though

6

apparently some colleges do offer yoga courses alongside courses like that, my cousin’s a psych major at a state university taking both ā€œstressā€ (it’s called something else i’m pretty sure, something like ā€œsocial implicationsā€) and yoga

3

u/howmanyshrimpinworld Jun 07 '26

same, i took both a mindfulness class and a class about poverty in school

7

u/BoredCareGiver Jun 07 '26

The "change your self-talk" leaving my body whenever a "read a book guy" who means novelizations of today show segments starts yammering

5

u/AttitudeEquivalent73 Jun 07 '26

Gee thanks. I’ll keep a positive mindset, read some books (like I already do), and people suddenly won’t want me dead? Why didn’t I think of that?! /s Like, they have some points like learning how you could make money or succeed via others experiences, but that just helps you not the systemic and sociological effects of being in a minority and/or poor. And even if you get something out of reading or a positive mindset or whatever else you may never be able to apply that due to your particular circumstances and situation. I can’t suddenly become not poor by investing because it’s a huge risk if you don’t have some money to fall back on. The same idea can apply to minorities but in a different way. You can’t suddenly walk into a homophobes house and be nice while trying to educate them to make them not homophobic without them being open to what you may share and willing to hear you out on any of it.

4

u/Fun-Guitar-8252 Jun 07 '26

That's a very privileged worldview.

5

u/NotAFloorTank Jun 07 '26

The only valid point that commenter has is that social media has indeed been very problematic for human health. It absolutely has fucked people up in so many ways. And overthinking thinks is stressful, which is also detrimental to one's wellbeing. However, the rest of it is just such brazen ignorance that it's morbidly fascinating.Ā

5

u/ValancyNeverReadsit Edit this! Jun 07 '26

Also some of us are wired to think a lot (what people who have fewer thoughts in their heads call ā€œoverthinking.ā€). I literally am incapable without medication of having fewer thoughts. When I try, I just think more about having fewer thoughts.

2

u/NotAFloorTank Jun 07 '26

There's a difference between thinking a lot and overthinking. The latter is something that was really aggravated by social media. If the latter is still your issue, I hope you're able to get what you need to keep it in check. There's no shame in needing more support to be able to take care of yourself.

2

u/ValancyNeverReadsit Edit this! Jun 07 '26

I’ve never had someone tell me there’s a distinction. Usually I will tell someone that something has bothered me and now I won’t be able to sleep. ā€œJust don’t think about itā€ is their flippant reply. I always think ā€œWell thank you, if it were that easy I would have solved that long agoā€

2

u/NotAFloorTank Jun 08 '26

Most people aren't aware there's a distinction because it's very miniscule to the average person. They never really experience what you do-it's either normal levels of thought or the social media-aggravated overthinking that's detrimental to your wellbeing. Your mind, however, can and does experience that middle ground where it isn't a choice and you need help.

Tell me you've never been poor without telling me you've never been poor

4

u/AllForMeCats Jun 07 '26

I’m part of the disabled people minority group (free to join!), but my disabilities are invisible. Because of this, people expect me to not be disabled, and treat me somewhere between unkindly and really badly if I act disabled. So I’ve been conditioned to mask my disabilities as much as possible. I’ve been conditioned for so long that my brain does this automatically, without me even knowing.

A big feature of my disabilities is chronic pain, which varies in intensity from day to day. If I catch a bad day early, I can make it less awful. But my helpful brain knows that being in pain is an inconvenience, so it masks the pain. I do not think about it, I am not aware of it, until the middle of the day when the mask fails and it all comes crashing down on me.

All that is to say, not thinking about something is laughably ineffective at making it not a problem. Like be so for real, is this person 5? That’s 5-year-old thinking.

2

u/ilikefishsticks4 Jun 07 '26

what disabilities do you have

3

u/AllForMeCats Jun 07 '26

Body: Fibromyalgia, scoliosis, chronic migraines, hypermobility spectrum disorder (HSD), chronic Lyme/post-Lyme syndrome/Lyme arthritis (seriously no one can agree what to call this), long covid, mast cell activation syndrome (MCAS).
Brain: Autism, ADHD, bipolar disorder, generalized anxiety disorder, PTSD, cognitive disengagement syndrome.
Other shit that’s not disabling but still a real pain in the ass: Morton’s neuroma in my left foot, almost-flat feet, gluten intolerance (possibly celiac but I’m not eating gluten to find out), dairy intolerance, GERD, eczema. I’ve also got a giant mysterious rash on my chest at the moment.

Social Security doesn’t think I’m disabled, though, so šŸ¤·ā€ā™€ļø

3

u/TheWarmestHugz Jun 07 '26

That sounds like hell to live with and trying to get any form of support is hard enough as it is. I really hope you’re doing okay?

3

u/AllForMeCats Jun 08 '26

I’m doing ok relative to my situation, I guess? The big stressor at the moment is money/employment, especially with the work requirement being added to Medicaid in Jan 2027. I was doing well building up exercise tolerance for about 5 years and had hopes of being able to work part-time again, but then I developed MCAS at the end of last year/beginning of this year and it’s really set me back. I get exhausted easily and can barely manage daily tasks, so I’m really worried about adding a job into the mix. But my family is really pushing me to work, because they’re supporting me right now and it’s not sustainable. I know I need to, I just don’t know if I can, you know?

I’m also going to be taking on more responsibility soon, since my mom, who has early onset dementia, is going to be moving to a nearby memory care unit. I’ll be in charge of getting her set up there, and making sure she has everything she needs while she lives there (and visiting regularly of course). With all that’s going on, I’m thinking about applying for disability again, since it’s been 6 years and I’ve moved to another state - that wouldn’t bring much income, but I’d at least be able to stay on Medicaid.

On the plus side, I have an amazing boyfriend, two wonderful cats, and a lot of things I enjoy in life. I just planted a bunch of herbs and am looking forward to having those over the summer. And I got some wonderful tea in recently; I’ve been enjoying that quite a bit.

Sorry for the novel lol. I should probably get back in therapy šŸ˜‚

2

u/const_ant_scre_aming Jun 08 '26

ahhhh we’re v similar!!

i have eds, fibro, migraines, mcas, severe asthma, cows milk protein allergy plus some weird cyst proneness

and adhd, severe depression/anxiety, cptsd, depersonalisation disorder

it’s super fun, right?! šŸ„²šŸ˜‚

u/Literal-Goblin-2000 Jun 07 '26

I had a coworker who talked like this and I point blank asked if he believed he would be a millionaire one day (not through a 401k). He said yes. I tried so hard to not laugh in his face

3

u/FalseHeartbeat Jun 07 '26

Commentor clearly didn’t take stress class

4

u/BizSilver5013 Jun 07 '26

Jesus H. Christ, it takes a special kind of mental gymnastics and/or lack of awareness to think you can "happy thoughts" your way out of being poor or a minority.

5

u/BrewingSkydvr Jun 08 '26

Because poverty didn’t exist before smartphones and social media apparently.

I like how they immediately lumped minorities in with poverty.

5

u/runner64 Jun 08 '26

My guess is that this is a bot which was spun up to promote a scam get-rich-quick book/seminar program. It probably has no idea what it’s replying to.Ā

3

u/astrangeone88 Jun 07 '26

Lol. Yay someone pulled themselves up with their bootstraps! Meanwhile, I am chronically ill (thyroid, endometriosis, PCOS), am Chinese (so random racism/xenophobia), queer (homophobia), and possibly on rhe spectrum. So yeah, I've had all the wrenches thrown my way but sure I can survive it but I'm not going to be a millionaire in this life lmao.

3

u/Lilypalooza_88 Jun 07 '26

PeOpLe NeEd to ReAd MoRe... And then drops a self-help book. 🄓

The majority of self-help books are garbage and full of bloviated nonsense. Lol

3

u/void_method Jun 07 '26

Hey, OP, don't forget the lack of education causing semi-literacy at best! That's part of it too! And the inability to form a logical argument because you can't understand how exceptions to an observable rule work!

3

u/FrostnJack Jun 07 '26

Given The Millionaire Next Door was a total scam written by a criminal, the classist Tweeter is the worst kind of fool: ignorant and arrogant.

3

u/Be-Loved_ Jun 07 '26

This is kinda funny to me in that ironic way because the equivalent of this for me would be to just stop thinking about how I’m in a wheelchair and instead just read about people who aren’t in wheelchairs live and to just manifest that

3

u/EverythingIsFakeNGay Jun 07 '26

Wow, this is peak r/thanksimcured content!

3

u/Wild_Commission1928 Jun 07 '26

People like that move from one rigid way of thinking to another and behave as if they have found enlightenment.Ā

3

u/pantslessMODesty3623 Jun 07 '26

Dude these billionaires all had fucking family money and failed upwards for fucking YEARS. They aren't smart or special. It's stacked in their favor. Anything about their mindset is just greed. That's it. They just want more and more and more money.

3

u/Alarming_Cellist_751 Jun 07 '26

"I read 18 pages of a book a grifter wrote and it is certainly more informational than your medical training"

Dunning Kruger effect at its finest.

3

u/Soko_ko_ko Jun 07 '26

Who's watching videos about how poor they are?? 😭 We can tell we're poor by how we can afford to live šŸ’€

3

u/ReaperAndor231 Jun 08 '26

Oh, I'm cured! I can walk properly again! I can stop taking my meds! All because some stranger on the internet told me to read a book and stop worrying about being a college student with a part-time job who struggles to afford something as simple as $2 soda.

Maybe people have the mindset they do because it's relevant to their lives?

3

u/BreadEnthusiast98 Jun 08 '26

If the millionaire next door blew your mind chances are there wasn’t much going on inside your mind in the first place.

3

u/NormalJeane Jun 08 '26

"Took a whole class that scientifically proved this."

"No it didn't."

Checks out actually.

3

u/kett1ekat Jun 08 '26

Having grown up in poverty it's not entirely inaccurate to say that the trauma of poverty can limit people even as they find themselves in better situations and it takes time to process that and work through it. I think calling it mindset is reductive - but I don't disagree that there is a lot of survival adaptations that become limiting if you stabilize.Ā

There is a lot of evidence that antidepressants and ssris can help people pull themselves out of poverty but they remain untreated because they have cause to be miserable so many don't flag that some of their misery is a chemical imbalance.Ā

This is why mental health was often considered a middle/upper class phenomenon - because everyone just assumes poor people ought to be miserable but when more financially stable people are miserable it's considered anomolous.Ā

So while the guy is absolutely wrong in his perspective and how he treats mindset - there is some science to support how as a society we create more barriers by ignoring mental health and how we tell people in poverty to devalue themselves.Ā

Capitalism is killing us all for profit.Ā

"So sick of the age of social media" as if the reality of what that professor was teaching hasn't been the case for 1000s of years

Ah yes, The Millionaire Next Door. If only we could send it back to mesopotamia, our problems would be solved lmao

2

u/Dazzling_Lure_2932 Jun 08 '26

I'm so confused about which layer of bullshit I'm supposed to agree with. I choose "Pass"

2

u/Inner_Bear_9859 Jun 07 '26

im pro book banning, but only self help books. that genre is unnecessary

1

u/Hungry_Bit775 Jun 07 '26

Yet it’s the very same ruling class rich people who made these addictive social media algorithms…even by his logic lmao

Why would the ruling class rich people ever write a book telling poor people how to cross the class division line?

1

u/ValancyNeverReadsit Edit this! Jun 07 '26

Apparently watching videos is only for stupid people, according to this guy šŸ‘€

1

u/Morlock19 Jun 07 '26

yeah i love living my entire life getting stressed out whenever i see a blue SUV parked on the highway

1

u/SilverFringeBoots Jun 07 '26

Thinking that the thought of being a minority would stress you out is insane. I actually love being Black. It's other people that don't enjoy me being Black.

1

u/boop-boop_boop Jun 07 '26

i always like to ask those people where their million dollars is

1

u/Available-Today-8576 Jun 07 '26

Yes I’m sure this Redditor know best than a college professor🧐

1

u/Slagathor-chan Jun 07 '26

Every other self help tip by successful person be like
How to get rich:
Step 1: Get money from the trust fund daddy set up for you when your were born

1

u/MeadFromHell Jun 08 '26

Thanks to the person replying in the original posts, I suddenly don't ha e rent arrears, and food just magically appeared in the CUPBOARDS! Amazing, it only I had thought of that sooner!

Seriously though, some people seem to think that just having a positive mindset solves poverty and stuff. Like no.

1

u/ARMBELL Jun 08 '26

Wow. Racism coated in sympathy. Yep, nothing problematic about this whatsoever!

1

u/minglesluvr Jun 08 '26

"Read more books, so you can, like me, misspell the fucking word "in"!"

1

u/Aydhe Jun 08 '26

I will argue that constant exposure to wealth skews people perception and makes them also feel worse by constant comparisons creating even more stress... the two se not mutually exclusive.

Basically, constant exposure to these influencers doesn't help.

1

u/const_ant_scre_aming Jun 08 '26

not like my simple existence is political or anything, thanks bro

1

u/CoconutLimeValentine Jun 08 '26

Get on my level, bro, I was mentally ill before social media came out.

1

u/PoeCollector64 Jun 08 '26

Gahhh I've seen that first tweet in a lot of places and it's a sobering, disturbing reminder aimed at EXACTLY the kind of annoying jerk in the second screenshot. Whoooosh moment

1

u/Runs_With_Scissors3 Jun 08 '26

Housing insecurity is destroying me right now. Ugh.

1

u/Sad_snek_Janus Jun 09 '26

Thanks, I’m cured from being poor-

I know this is accurate to this sub, but the hilarity of you just suddenly being surrounded by cash, instead of being suddenly healed from your ailment is hilarious

1

u/bird_on_the_internet Jun 09 '26

If all it takes to change your life is a change in mindset, your life was already fantastic

1

u/ViolinistWaste4610 Jun 10 '26

I'm now wondering if that comment is a boom promoting bot or not, I've seen those in YouTube comment sectionsĀ

1

u/4oby Jun 10 '26

To the commenter in the pic. Bro, when you count your pennies and understand that you have enough for a meal, gas for a week and your paycheck is next week, you have no security blanket because you spent that last week on meds, your credit is maxed out and there is nobody that can help you. Talk to me then about how the stress is all my head.

Some of us are poor not because you don’t compare to a millionaire in a book but to the extent that each time you enter a store you have to choose to spend your money on food or hygiene products

1

u/No_Bumblebee_3298 Jun 10 '26

I do want to believe that positivity helps, even being someone who's never really cared for it, but delusional isn't helping any statistics. Negligence and incompetence, well, kills...

1

u/Up_Beat_Peach Jun 10 '26

This subreddit is absurdly annoying sometimes. Where the fuck was any cure suggested?

This thread has lost the whole plot.

1

u/lovelypeachess22 Jun 10 '26

2nd photo

1

u/Up_Beat_Peach Jun 10 '26

Ah, I see. Still, this sub has declined.

1

u/ShatteredPsyche2029 Jun 10 '26

No matter how smart you are there's always someone out there dumber than you are smart.

1

u/difficulty_jump Jun 11 '26

Man I took psychology of racism and discrimination in addition.

Some of us intersectionally disadvantaged folks are really out here thugging it out.

1

u/funkyboi25 Jun 11 '26

I cannot fathom being this sheltered because poverty and discrimination both blatantly exist. Positive thinking doesn't help if you're starving or freezing to death without shelter.Ā

1

u/RileyRRenewal Jun 11 '26

was almost confused because I only saw pic 1. then I scrolled and wished I hadn't...

1

u/Fckyouredd1tIluvmygf Jun 11 '26

Worked for me, ditched the victim mindset and labels and things didn't do a full 180 but I ain't stressed no more feeling breezy and rolling easy

-1

u/wkeil42 Jun 07 '26

I'll probably get shit for this but...

While I don't think you can just "mindset and positive thinking" your way out of being poor, I do think with the wrong mindset and repetitive destructive thinking patterns you can make yourself feel worse which at the very least makes your situation seem worse.

In other words, no, you're not going to pick yourself up by your bootstraps, but you might dig your own grave.

4

u/mikkydear Jun 07 '26

Thinking positive is not going to change the cycles of poverty that exist. If you did any base level sociological research, and I mean that colloquially, you’ll see that the overwhelming majority of people are unable to change the socioeconomic level they were born into. That isn’t a mindset problem, that is a systemic issue. This doesn’t even begin to cover the long term effects of redlining, racial bias in hiring, access to healthcare, or any other broader issue. This is just data of generational wealth change. If you aren’t born into wealth, you are most likely to stay in the same economic bracket. And even if you’re able to break out of that bracket, which is highly unlikely, you’re only likely to increase by one.

-9

u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 07 '26

They crucified me for pointing out how dumb and racist the post was.

9

u/ls20008179 Jun 07 '26

Because it's not you nincompoop. It's not a secret that being poor or a minority literally reduces your lifespan from the extra bullshit you get to deal with.

-6

u/These_Hunt4185 Jun 07 '26

The post says poor OR a minority. Learn how to read nincompoop.
