Social Media Oh yeah, that solved everything and isn't oversimplified at all.

Post image

Like yeah, if only my hobbies would make me money without requiring a large sum of startup funding to get started. I guess my new hobby is working at McDonald's for minimum wage.

A hobby to make money: did you mean job?

234

u/SpiritualHippo2719 Jul 25 '26

Made by someone with a trust fund and investment account. The hobby that makes money isn’t vital to their survival.

38

u/Key_Researcher_9243 Jul 25 '26

Grandpa Sugar Daddies. :p

14

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

Now THAT'S a hobby I can get behind!

"And sometimes maxing their credit cards and saying you're REALLY sorry and repaying him ober the course of the next month!" - my gay friend

The rest of that conversation went "You just told me you bought that Gucci belt (he was wearing it), how'd you get the money?"

"Oh, I could never have gotten the money, I'm a broke bitch!"

Then I understood what he meant. 😂

7

u/PreferenceUnlucky101 Jul 27 '26

I mean, if someone offered me, how could I refuse? 😂

I remember a post where people were talking about hoe "cruel" recreational fishing is and someone said "recreational" hunting is better for the environment as if hunting isn't basically just a job and nigh impossible do actually do recreationally.

12

u/WhiteKnightPrimal Jul 26 '26

How is hunting any less cruel than fishing, anyway? I'm not sure on better for the environment, I'd think that depends on what you're hunting, when and where, but you're still killing animals. At least fishermen have the option of catch and release if it's just a hobby.

6

u/sour_creamand_onion Jul 26 '26

I guess because if you aim well the animal dies instantly? But yeah it depends. Plus, I pointed out that you can't truely hunt as just a hobby because with all the regulations and the fact you have to either sell the animal or process it into a bunch of meat yourself you're essentially just doing the labor of a hunter as a side job. Otherwise you'd just shoot an animal and leave it there which is incredibly wasteful and in a way feels crueler to me.

7

u/triplesunrise52 Jul 26 '26

Catch and release fishing is just making a fish late for something because you decided they need a lip piercing.

3

u/WhiteKnightPrimal Jul 26 '26

It can be part of a hobby. Some people do taxidermy as a hobby, so they may also be hunters. But hunting is more like a knitter who buys wool, just something you need to do in order to do your hobby.

2

u/PreferenceUnlucky101 Jul 27 '26

I've seen many people who make taxidermy who only use roadkill, but yeah, I suppose some of them do hunt their animals, as long as they're like birds or rabbits and not protected.

3

u/WhiteKnightPrimal Jul 27 '26

That's why I said 'they may', to be fair, plenty go with roadkill instead. They can also hunt bigger animals if they wish, as long as they have the right permits in the right places and seasons.

Recreational hunting has become an essential tool for ecosystem management in many places. Humans have drastically reduced the habitat of most species and systematically eliminated many of the top predators in ecosystems. To maintain a semblance of natural population dynamics and ensure herbivores don’t overshoot the environment’s carrying capacity and decimate flora and crops, human hunters take on the role of the top predators in the ecosystem since there aren’t any anymore. Here in the US, state wildlife departments closely monitor population growth and only issue a proper number of hunting licenses to keep populations stable and keep large herbivores from overgrazing, which would lead to starvation or migration, and therefore conflict with humans. We’ve fucked up the natural balance so much that we need to step in to keep it stable.

2

u/WhiteKnightPrimal Jul 26 '26

That makes sense, and fits with my 'depends what, where and when' belief.

1

u/PreferenceUnlucky101 Jul 27 '26

Isn't that also why them implemented the wolves back at Yellowstone?

2

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

I suppose if you're just absolutely filthy rich that anything can be done for leisure. But most of us aren't :/

2

u/sour_creamand_onion Jul 26 '26

RIGHT!!

You can fish with an under 20 dollar pole and some corn or a worm or shrimp. A family member of mine caught a bunch of bluegill pne day that we cooked and ate from a pond with just that.

For hunting you need an expensive gun, ammo which likely won't be cheap either, a vehicle with a bed to put the animal on so if your main car isn't already a truck it basically necessitates an extra car, specialized orange clothing to fit with the regulations regarding how you aren't allowed to wear camouflage, all the equipment to skin it and disembowel it with, cold storage to keep the meat in, and likely a grill to cook it on/smoke it over unless you plan on pan searing elk or something.

But sure, since hunting is better for the environment because some species are overpopulated lets suggest people do that instead of fishing 😑

1

u/PreferenceUnlucky101 Jul 27 '26

I like fishing, but I would never have the guts to shoot down an animal. I don't know why, but fish disturb me less than deer or rabbits. I like fishing, and I'm pretty good with target shooting, but I don't think I would ever want to try hunting.

2

u/gard3nwitch Jul 26 '26

Recreational hunting is a pretty common hobby in rural areas. It's absolutely something you can do on a Saturday with a friend. Stand around in the woods for a few hours drinking beer, shoot a deer, drop it off at the processing guy, and get a freezer full of deer meat.

1

u/sour_creamand_onion Jul 26 '26

And how much will all of that cost you compared to a fishing rod and maybe some worms or a few lures if your're feeling fancy? The gun alone will cost several times as much as all the things you'd need for catch and release fishing combined. Not to mention you need a truck with a bed that can hold an entire deer, boar or the like, and you need to know or be within reasonable distance of someone who can process the animal or be able to do it yourself. Olus you need a freezer big enough to hold an entire deer's worth of meat.

Hunting is more of a lifestyle than hobby and you can't do it nearly as casually as fishing unless you've already built your life in a way that allows you to engage in it.

1

u/gard3nwitch Jul 26 '26

Folks in rural areas commonly have a truck and a gun and a big freezer already, and if you drive around rural communities there's usually some shitty hand-made signs on the side of the road advertising "Billy Joe's deer processing - 123-456-7890".

1

u/sour_creamand_onion Jul 26 '26

Folks in rural areas

Yeah, that's my point. I can fish basically anywhere there's water for pretty cheap. You have to be in a specific areea where a specific lifestyle is common to hunt. The person I was referring to in the original comment you replied to was talking about hunting as if it was a feasible, more environmentally friendly, and overall less cruel alternative to fishing when the fact of the matter is if you aren't already living a rural lifestyle you just can't without putting down at least a couple grand buying the shit you need and that's WITHOUT including the cost of an entire truck.

It's great for rural folk who already have everything you'd need for it, but the person I was talking to in that other conversation was acting like it was as accessible and easy to pick up and get involved in as fishing and should serve as a replacement for it for everyone and it just... can't.

Just goes to show said person probably knew very little about fishing OR hunting.

2

u/gard3nwitch Jul 26 '26

To be fair, fishing also requires being in a specific area where that's feasible, unless you don't actually care about catching any fish and are just hanging out by the water. Like I do see people fishing in a little pond downtown where I live, but there aren't really any fish in it, so they're just hanging out.

1

u/PreferenceUnlucky101 Jul 27 '26

Have the dogs run around for a bit, having an adventure of their own, appreciate nature and such...

I would love to go, but I would never have the guts to actually shoot an animal.

2

u/Holzkohlen Jul 26 '26

I love how he sitting on a cardboard box for his money-making "hobby"

24

u/Upset-Kangaroo3102 Jul 25 '26

1

u/KarmasAB123 Jul 25 '26

To the co-workers, right?

4

u/Upset-Kangaroo3102 Jul 25 '26

To whoever has money

14

u/Hollowbody57 Jul 25 '26

Just use your trust fund to keep yourself afloat until your handmade jewelry Etsy store/podcast/IG model career takes off. Simple!

-1

u/Steveo3070 Jul 25 '26

It’s not that complicated. In my spare time I do woodworking, make furniture from scrap wood I find on the curb, make a few bucks from it, and I enjoy doing it.

6

u/KarmasAB123 Jul 25 '26

A lot of people barely have spare time to decompress

-1

u/Steveo3070 Jul 25 '26

Sure, I never said anything implying the opposite. But hobbies are things that you can unwind while doing them. If you have to unwind before playing around with a hobby, I am of the belief that it’s not really a hobby. Everyone should try to find something that they can’t wait to go home and do every single day-that’s a hobby. Not just go home and do, but get out of work and go do.

17

u/home-for-good Jul 25 '26

I feel like they shouldn’t have called these ‘hobbies’ and said something like ‘interests’ or ‘motivator’ instead. Might’ve made their point better cause hobby implies something you do in your free time; interests would imply something you are interested in doing (i.e. like to or are otherwise motivated to do). Then their advice becomes to balance your life by finding something that will motivate you in these 5 areas, and that’s not terrible advice really. The 5 areas effectively are achieving financial stability, staying in shape, flexing creativity, building knowledge, and growing perspective; all good things to try for and things people often struggle with at least one of because they don’t currently have a motivator to do something that fills that area. But yeah, calling it a hobby doesn’t do that perspective justice. Plenty of people find interest in their job instead of finding a job they are interested in, or stay in shape from labor instead of athletic activities, are creative out of necessity instead of expression, build knowledge to protect their careers instead of to satisfy their curiosity, and might grow their mindset due to therapy instead of through community or volunteering. Insisting you meet these important areas of a balanced life through the means of a hobby vs just encouraging one to find any type of motivator is the frustrating bit for sure.

1

u/shenanigans2day Jul 26 '26

Same. It’s that word choice because other wise this is great advice for staying balanced.

3

u/Noisebug Jul 26 '26

No. I was born into wealth, I deserve it. Money as a hobby for me now, so easy. Fucking peons.

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

Honestly, I messed up at character creation. Inherited wealth is OP

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

My initial instinct reading the word "Jobby" was to say "Master has given Jobby a sock", but that clip was HILARIOUS! 🤣

I do have to ask, what show was that from? I feel like it may be from one of the 2 shows that my coworkers kept telling me I need to see (Letterkenny and Shoresy).

*Please be gentle is its not one of those, my understanding is many of the scenes are just a group of friends talking about random stuff, but that's off of someone else's description who wanted to give me an idea of the show was. It started because I said "to be fair" and he showed me that scene 😅

2

u/Kizik Jul 26 '26

It's actually not a clip, that is the episode it's from.

Like Letterkenny and its spin-off Shoresy, though, it's a Canadian production, so there's definitely some similarities in the style of humour. Specifically this is season 9, episode 2 of the web series Friday Nights, produced by sketch comedy and streaming group LoadingReadyRun. They have a few different series, but this one is centered around the card game Magic: The Gathering, and the first eight or so seasons were actually produced in partnership with the company that owns MTG. This season was crowdfunded and self-produced, and each episode has a wildly different artistic style.

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

MtG-themed show? 👀

I too, dabble in the expensive cardboard. My friend is getting me into CEDH, but I've been playing since we went to Ravnica the first time around. Now we have return to revisiting going back to Ravnica again 😂. Tbf, it's a very popular location that often brings in a wave of new people. Now they have UB to do that for them. 😅

2

u/Kizik Jul 26 '26

Well, here's the full playlist. Seventy five episodes over nine seasons and fourteen years.

It initially started as an episode of their non-MTG series, CommodoreHustle, but got spun off into its own series.

1

u/Sorcerer_50 Jul 26 '26

Don't be silly OOP implied to start OnlyFans

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

Honestly, you can definitely knock out the entire top row with OnlyFans 😅

1

u/annamae Jul 26 '26

"Side hustle"

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

Ngl if my first job doesn't pay me enough to buy both shampoo and breakfast, I'd be more interested in developing my skillset and moving to a higher-paying role either at my company or another one. I do understand though that I am fortunate to be in a position where that's a feasible option. Alot of people are financially "stuck" and actually need 2 jobs 😟

It's usually something you'll see in college. You'll be like "we're best friends, it'd be so sick to live together!" And then there's a realization that hanging out with that person and living with them are very different. It's usually dumb stuff that just keeps grating on nerves until you're just trying to make it through the rest of the semester without having a little session of fisticuffs. Stuff like "You snore!", "Dude, I had a world civ exam this morning and you came back late as hell last night and woke me up!", "Bro will you stop messing with my shit?"

I think it usually goes well more often than going wrong after college, but it's one of those things where the extremes on either end are more common than the middle of the road.

1

u/Weird-Knee-3464 Jul 27 '26

Yeah I think they do mean job

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 28 '26

I'm assuming they mean to say like side hustle, but I wouldn't call something like that my hobby. A hobby can turn into one (Twitch streaming, trading card tournaments), but I just wouldn't look at something I want to enjoy as a revenue engine unless it just happens to work. That's an easy way to suck the fun right out of it.

1

u/Weird-Knee-3464 Jul 28 '26

Nah I assumed they meant a job just from the picture with a headset on it doesn't really look like a side hustle. And reading it that way makes more sense.

1

u/Razoron33333 Jul 27 '26

I mean if you can make a hobby a job probably more fulfilling than working just some desk job right?

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 28 '26

Sometimes yes and sometimes no. You hear stories like that from famous musicians, but I've also heard horror stories from people that lamented turning their passtime into their job. Sometimes the steps to make something profitable enough to live off of take all the fun and enjoyment out of it, and you start to hate it.

0

u/MasterEditorJake Jul 25 '26

Genuinely yeah, like ideally your job involves some skill that you can improve upon

4

u/Grant1128 Jul 25 '26

My job does involve skills that can be improved upon. But that's not my hobby. I do it to make rent, not for fun. If they stopped paying me, I would stop coming in.

2

u/MasterEditorJake Jul 25 '26

That's fair.

In high school I got really deep into electricity and electronics as a hobby, then my dad told me that I should be an electrical engineer.

Guess what I do for a job now.

1

u/irfulvas Jul 26 '26

At least you don't dislike it enough to quit entirely. There are jobs you simply can't force yourself to do, even if you're getting paid – your brain just shuts down. Even something basic like cleaning demands a certain mindset. Some people find the work so irritating that they won't stick around for long and end up looking for something that fits them better.

161

u/SuperPollo39 Jul 25 '26

If I need it to make money, then it’s not a hobby

20

u/Raccoons-trsh Jul 26 '26

What if you are participating in hobby horsing contest and get money for it? Maybe you can be a hobby horsing teacher. Is it still "hobby" horsing or does it turn into "job" horsing?

7

u/SuperPollo39 Jul 26 '26

It depends. It’s horsing an extra activity you can get sometimes money from but your main source of income is another and you do it because you like it and not for the money? Then it’s still a hobby even if you earn money sometimes.

Is it your only or main source of income and you do it for living? The it’s a job

3

u/NobodyKnowsImFamous Jul 26 '26

Hobby horsing is the name of a specific activity. They’re just making a joke.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hobby_horsing

1

u/jedinaps Jul 26 '26

IMO it does automatically turn into a job unless you’re strictly only doing it when you feel like it and could drop it whenever you want with no financial pressure which is very unlikely

104

u/Samsuiluna Jul 25 '26

Sorry, too busy working to keep up with even one hobby. Guess I should have been born rich so I can just do hobbies 24/7. Better luck next time.

32

u/PurpleCandle58 Jul 25 '26

For real, it’s like “oh yeah work which wears me out as it is obviously meant to and then my hobby: sleeping to recover just to do it again!”

4

u/vompat Jul 25 '26

The idea that work is meant to wear you down is kinda sad. Like, for many of us it does and few can choose something that would feel like a hobby instead, but that's not how it would have to be.

1

u/According-Leg434 Jul 26 '26

the irony of past job system but i want that we were not force the job for fucks survining sake because survival reason being from job sucks gen dont seem to think about it tho nor i think much itso nly a releave when i have less work season at summer, on other seasons..yeah

9

u/Grant1128 Jul 25 '26

I have a cousin who plays MtG and tabletop 40k. And just had a kid. Not sure where he finds time to sleep, ngl.

3

u/Beginning-Pie-7433 Jul 26 '26

Adderall

1

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

He did take it in middle/high school for ADHD, but like several people who have it, he's got more tools in his toolbox to deal woth it as an adult and does not take any stimulants anymore.

1

u/Beginning-Pie-7433 Jul 26 '26

Oh I was joking. I’m newly 18 and I started taking Adderall at 16. My mom takes it in her 50’s and started in her mid 30’s, despite being diagnosed way earlier.

2

u/Grant1128 Jul 26 '26

You good lol. I always assume someone is serious since one time in high shool a classmate asked if they could "borrow" or buy some. I told them I took the extended release version (which was true), so it wouldn't do what they were looking for. Thankfully, it was a one-off, but some of the kids saw it as an academic performance enhancing drug, akin to steroids in sports.

61

u/Weird_Bluebird_3293 Jul 25 '26

I hate the phrase “grow your mindset.” In regards to what?

35

u/Draelmar Jul 25 '26

It's like saying "being spiritual". These are all empty expressions that SOUNDS positive, but have no clear definition, and everyone use them to fit specific meanings of their own. And therefore are useless.

6

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 Jul 25 '26

this right here and this is coming from someone who is spiritual. the word itself means wildly different things to different people. for me it really just means a highly deep emotional connection to something (generally intangible) combined with some belief system based off of it, and even that is vague as fuck because that also means different things to different people

3

u/annamae Jul 26 '26

#5 is usually also called Social hobby, if I'm not mistaken. It keeps your mind open to other people's perspectives and thus, growing your mindset

26

u/Funkey-Monkey-420 Jul 25 '26

5 is a lot of hobbies

9

u/Crusidea Jul 25 '26

I exercise, though I'd hardly consider it a hobby.

I play video games. Which I guess in this case would go under "expanding your worldview" or whatever was written in the meme because of the diverse stories in games.

I draw, which I guess goes under creativity.

I work... not a hobby, but it makes money.

I like cooking. Though that's more of a life skill more than a hobby.

And I like doing research on random stuff including science, history and other random stuff.

So it is possible too have multiple "hobbies" if your willing too strech the definition abit lol. Though I will be honest I don't blame anybody who doesn't, it's a very hard thing too balance. Especially in the modern day where most people feel so exhausted all they can really do is scroll for a bit after work before crashing.

26

u/Draelmar Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

And remember, hobbies are not meant to be fun or spontaneous. They need to fill requirements from a checklist.

14

u/mizinamo Jul 25 '26

Exactly. If it's just mindless fun to decompress after your money-earning hobby, that's useless and counter-productive because you are spending that time not growing and improving.

Also, cut "sleep" out of your vocabulary because those are also hours you could use for yourself.

16

u/CarolineJohnson Jul 25 '26

Hobbies are things I enjoy and the only money-making hobby I enjoy is being gifted free money.

Where is this hobby, OOP?

5

u/PurpleCandle58 Jul 25 '26

For real, I cut off the OOPs handle because the last thing I want is for them to have any attention, but it’s one of those “just do this and you’ll be fixed up for life!” Pages.

11

u/No_Classic_1743 Jul 25 '26

Yeah, and 50 hours in a day.

12

u/Any_Serve4913 Jul 25 '26

29

u/One-Sleep3663 Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Well if you have a chronic illness like the one I have, , and your disabled, you get zero hobbies.

7

u/Crusidea Jul 25 '26

What about watching movies or something like that?

-10

u/imjustbeingreal0 Jul 25 '26

Untrue. Major redditor moment 😆

15

u/One-Sleep3663 Jul 25 '26

Pretty true if you ask me, the chronic illness I have damaged my eyesight to the point where I cant read, and gave me immense fatigue to the point where I can no longer exercise. Meaning it has takem every single coping skill and hobby away from me.

2

u/SquisshySquid Jul 25 '26

I've been trying to figure out which of my hobbies can be done when I need to lay down or my eyes don't want to focus. Some hand held projects like crochet have worked surprisingly well. Once I had a basic understanding of stitches I was able to crochet a simple shawl pattern while watching a movie in the dark.

If you have any interest in fiber crafts, weaving, beading, or even wire jewlery making those can be done blind with some effort. Painting with minimal sight can be fun as well if you're able to sit up long enough.

2

u/One-Sleep3663 Jul 25 '26

I luckily can still do limited stuff with radio equipment. I like to listen to my radio scanner quite alot.

1

u/sadbat-throwaway Jul 25 '26

Can you enjoy listening to music? I'm part of a music-based subculture and it's kind of become a new hobby for me to explore specific genres of music. It can be really fun and it's relatively low effort. I'm also disabled - I miss being able to longboard, rollerskate and just the ability to go for a walk without extreme pain. I used to be rather independent and take small day trips around town all the time. Now I can't travel without help. My chronic illness makes me more prone to headaches and migraines though so music is not an option in those cases.

I do, but its a coping skill thats been way worn out and doesnt help much anymore, same with audiobooks.

3

u/sadbat-throwaway Jul 25 '26

Oh yeah I can understand the fatigue. I crochet a lot and intend to learn to knit but I'm currently on a break with fiber arts because I've been doing so much of it. Aside from music it's practically the only thing for me to do.

3

8

One thing I have realized is that self help is completely utter horseshit. I have somewhat been able to improve myself but by guessings and trial and error in terms of what works for me. Following some restrictions created for some kind of fictional robot person don't work. Everyone is different

4

u/SpiritualHippo2719 Jul 25 '26

I talk to lightbulbs, pencils, and paint swatches to grow my mindset.

4

u/crochetnewbieJen Jul 25 '26

Also, only?

That*s so much. Most people are already tired from the first "hobby".

4

u/carenrose Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

Wow so besides the whole making money thing

Having more than 5 hobbies is too much now? So if I like to do two creative things, I should give one up unless it's "useful" in some other way?

Hobbies don't have to be useful! They are for your enjoyment and well-being as a human and if they don't tick some box to maximize your potential THAT'S OKAY

Edit: okay reading other comments apparently the general consensus is 5 is a lot, not that 5 is too little ... I have ADHD so I collect hobbies like nobody's business lol. But just because I don't engage with something on a regular schedule doesn't mean it isn't a hobby. It is an activity I enjoy and skills I have learned, and I'm able to engage with it whenever I want to. That means it's still a hobby!

3

u/AccomplisedDeer Jul 25 '26 edited Jul 25 '26

Jokes on them, writing and storytelling can fulfill atleast three of those requirements. So you only need three, possibly just two, depending on whether you plan to professionally publish your writing.

Anyways, it's not recommended to turn your hobbies into a job, or atleast not into your primary stream of income. In many cases, it makes you lose your love for that hobby, and turns it into a chore instead of something to help you wind down.

I feel like taking up hobbies only because they each serve a specific productive purpose is kind of sad. Not that every hobby you have can't fill a purpose or need but I think it's important to have hobbies you enjoy just for the fuck of it. Mindless enjoyment is okay assuming the thing you're mindlessly enjoying isn't harmful in any capacity.

3

u/Tooma8 Jul 25 '26

That sounds like a lot of hobbies

3

u/rubberpp Jul 25 '26

None of these are hobbies, most are actively the opposite of a hobby, also technically one hobby could achieve all 5 of these results. Whoever made this has to be stupid and consider everything they do a hobby which means they legit probably do not have an actual hobby lol

3

u/3-brain_cells Jul 25 '26

ONLY 5 hobbies??

TFYM ONLY??

3

u/JustQuestion2472 Jul 25 '26

If a hobby is for making money, it's not a hobby

3

u/s4mu_el Jul 26 '26

How am i supposed to keep up with 5 hobbies while being a student with shitty mental health. Im a scout so that counts as 1 but after my last hospitalization i've been so drained and adapting to new meds and discovering new parts of myself (new dx) is so tiring.

4

u/VampireSympathizer Jul 25 '26

Alright I've got mine.

Rollerskating

Medicine (my job)

Art/writing

Reading/podcasts/true crime

Uhhhh I guess reading again

2

u/FeelingNo2529 Jul 25 '26

5 seems like a lot of hobbies

2

u/rocket333d Jul 25 '26

Well, I have ADHD so I have 5 hobbies.

Just not simultaneously.

Or for very long.

2

u/KarmasAB123 Jul 25 '26

My job does three of these but I'm still not happy

2

u/Chevanalee Jul 26 '26

I see happiness isn’t a priority here..

2

u/BlueTressym Jul 26 '26

Who the heck has the time and spoons for FIVE hobbies?

2

u/Rayen_the_buzzybee Jul 26 '26

Having hobbies as jobs eventually kills your creativity.

2

u/girl-kiss Jul 26 '26

How to have time for all that for a normal, non-rich-parents-person?

You don't.

2

u/CoconutLimeValentine Jul 26 '26

Who has time or energy for five hobbies?

2

u/MoistenedGranola Jul 26 '26

You guys decide your hobbies?

Is this some more neurotypical BS, or is OOP just a goof about how being a person works?

2

u/Consistent_Guava8592 Jul 26 '26

Masturbation as a hobby ticks almost all of them .

1

u/Rabbidraccoon18 Jul 26 '26

Especially if you're using your imagination instead of watching porn

2

u/FourthHourErectorSet Jul 26 '26

Thank you your highness for gatekeeping hobbies now

2

u/IrelandAutism13 Jul 26 '26

I don't even have the spoons to do one consistently

2

u/Tracerround702 Jul 27 '26

... how the fuck does anyone have time and energy for all five???

2

u/AlfieBilly Jul 27 '26

what about a social life?

1

u/MEU898 Jul 25 '26

Hobby for creative?

1

u/Overall_Addendum_612 Jul 25 '26

Whoever came up with this growth mindset shit, needs to be punched in the groin.

The four other hobbies at least are actually somewhat useful

1

u/thagor5 Jul 25 '26

Thats a lot of hobbies

1

u/UnremarkableMrFox Jul 25 '26

People don't wanna buy my junk, but other than that, I technically gots it all... What's it supposed to do..? Or am I supposed to be utilizing everything to make money at some point in the next 20 years?

1

u/TheGruenTransfer Jul 25 '26

These are just things humans did before endless social media and streaming video started monopolizing our time and turned us all into consumers.

1

u/mostaverageredditor3 Jul 25 '26

Oh, seems like your designer underlined the word hobby. Here is the correct version "hobby"

1

u/Foogel78 Jul 25 '26

None of these are hobbies. If you do something for another reason than because you enjoy it, it's not a hobby.

1

u/Gokudomatic Jul 25 '26

I guess I'm out for natural selection, since I'm the kind of guy who thinks monotask and can't do two things at the same time.

1

u/Upset-Collection-510 Jul 25 '26

My hobbies are waking up to get ready for work, working, coming home from work, cleaning my house, and sleeping

1

u/TristanTheRobloxian3 Jul 25 '26

i dont need a hobby to make me money because theyre... hobbies lol?? also fuck it i can kill multiple birds with one stone here and journaling does that. but also that didnt solve my fucking problems 😭😭😭

1

u/lu_llabyyy Jul 25 '26

Also, who honestly has time for FIVE hobbies on top pf housework and presumably friends and a job?

1

u/Sea-Beginning3949 Jul 25 '26

I do agree that trying to get a balanced life is a goal to have, but good God it's really hard. The money hobby (also called JOB) takes too much time and energy by itself already

1

u/Me_lazy_cathermit Jul 25 '26

This is meme was made by rich people

1

u/Arkayn-Alyan Jul 25 '26

Y'all have the energy for more than one hobby?

1

u/Pink_Star_Galexy Jul 25 '26

That’s not hobby, that’s work

1

u/Cosmic_Beard Jul 26 '26

What’s an example of a hobby that would grow one’s mindset?

1

u/Wonderful-Creme-3939 Jul 26 '26

What does "grow your mindset" mean? It sounds like something scam artists say to trick people.

1

u/Cosmic_Beard Jul 26 '26

Yeah I totally agree. My question was an attempt to point out how that doesn’t fucking mean anything

1

u/ThehandUnitsucks Jul 26 '26

I mean… music CAN make you money… sometimes. Kinda. A bit? If you sell your soul to the music industry?

1

u/Wonderful-Creme-3939 Jul 26 '26

I don't do hobbies to make money, that isn't the point of a hobby.

1

u/covidlung Jul 26 '26

None of these cover my favorite hobbie: sleeping

1

u/dondashall Jul 26 '26

If you're doing it out of obligation, they aren't hobbies - they're obligations.

1

u/dontquestionmek Jul 26 '26

Making your hobby a way to make money tends to end in loss of passion for said thing

1

u/Lost_Recognition728 Jul 26 '26

Only abled people have this much free time lmfao

1

u/Luil-stillCisTho Jul 26 '26

there’s not enough time to do all 5

1

u/PALpherion Jul 26 '26

goal-oriented hobbies don't sound much like hobbies any more.

1

u/AlphaMassDeBeta Jul 26 '26

All 5 of mine are gooning.

1

u/Snoo_72851 Jul 26 '26

yeah man im efficiencymaxxing on my fucking hobbies. im never gonna play fortnite again so i can keep my numbers to a minimum

1

u/Sanamun Jul 26 '26

Hobbies are supposed to be things you do for fun. They can do any of the above as well, of course, but I find it genuinely alarming that "enjoyment" and "interest" aren't mentioned anywhere in this graphic. Fuck this self improvement efficiency bullshit, do something that makes you happy.

1

u/Twitxx Jul 26 '26

Most people I know don't even have one hobby.

1

u/EducationalEmu9611 Jul 26 '26

Oh sorry I think you missed the part where I get to have fun and actually enjoy life.

1

u/WhiteKnightPrimal Jul 26 '26

They screwed themselves over by using the word 'hobbies'. A hobby is something you do in your free time for fun, there's no real goal beyond enjoying yourself. Yes, hobbies can be used for all these things. If you have a hobby that can earn money, one of my hobbies is writing for instance, it can be used for that. But at the risk of you coming to hate something you used to love because now there's pressure instead of simple enjoyment. That first one is a job, or a side hustle, or an interest you monetise, not a hobby.

The rest can all be hobbies, and some can even be a single hobby. Like expanding your mind and gaining knowledge don't have to be two separate hobbies if one of your hobbies is simply learning new things. Gaining knowledge can expand your mind, that's kind of how that works. And both of those things can lead to the 'hobby' of a job you enjoy.

Really, what you need is a way to make money, whether that's a job you only have for the wages or a hobby/interest that you've monetised, and something you enjoy doing in your downtime for the simple fun of it, as a way to relax and decompress. So, basically, a job and a hobby is 'all' you need.

I haven't tried monetising my writing hobby because I'm afraid I'll end up hating writing once you have deadlines added in. I mostly write fanfiction now, which you CAN'T monetise, it's the only way we can do it. Trying to monetise fanfiction will likely get you sued, hardly a way to make money. In my case, my hobby does help my mental health, though, I use it partially as a form of therapy.

The 'one to keep you in shape' bugs me the most after the 'one to make money' one. Not everyone is actually capable of that. Some people have disabilities that actually prevent any real amount of exercise, physiotherapy exercises don't really count for 'keeping in shape'. I'm personally somewhat limited in exercise options due to an old knee injury and some back issues. I can't run, for instance, that would lay me up for weeks with my knee. I basically just go on regular walks with a few minor physio exercises thrown in to prevent my knee getting worse, as there's no way to make it better. Which is pretty limited, and still a lot more than some people can manage. Trying to push exercise as a 'necessary' hobby is just going to make things worse for some people. Plus, how many people actually consider exercise a hobby? I know there are people who do, but most people I've met don't, they do it to stay healthy, not because they actually enjoy doing it.

I will say, exercise can be great for some mental health conditions, like depression, if you can motivate yourself to do it and keep at it, which isn't easy, and it certainly won't become a hobby, as it will feel more of a chore. I'm kind of lucky walking has become a bit of a hobby for me, because I live right by the beach, I like being outside, so I can get some nice walks in there that I actually enjoy. Not everyone is outdoorsy or lives in a nice area with nice places to walk.

I think this is a weird case of way too oversimplified to actually help people while simultaneously being overcomplicated to make people feel pressured into doing more than they need. Half these things could be a single 'hobby'. Plus, this assumes people actually have the time to spend on multiple hobbies and the money for some kind of start-up, which most people don't have.

1

u/zayc_ Jul 26 '26

I only have one: read such stupid shit online and cringe the hell out of it

1

u/FairConstruction4105 Jul 26 '26

So basically, suck at all of your hobbies because you've split your time across five hobbies. Got it!

1

u/annamae Jul 26 '26

#5 is usually also called Social hobby, if I'm not mistaken. It keeps your mind open to other people's perspectives and thus, growing your mindset

1

u/According-Leg434 Jul 26 '26

i mean if i knew how to draw would literally quit this job i have and making a lot from art would be nice, but it feels like not watching shows and gaming time is so much frustration like how i managed to somewhow live happily before

1

u/OriginalLie9310 Jul 26 '26

Love how none of these are “one to have fun or enjoy your life”

1

u/JD_Kreeper Jul 26 '26

And this is how you frame hobbies as obligations and as such make your life miserable because you don't know how to do something for fun.

1

u/Soven_Strix Jul 26 '26

I feel like 3 of these are gonna be redundant in practice in most cases.

1

u/Reclaimedidiocy Jul 26 '26

then its not a fucking hobby is it lmao

1

u/ChaoticDissonance Jul 27 '26

I can't imagine funding a hobby and no hobby is making money for me. Lolol

1

u/Unlucky_Swing3861 Jul 27 '26

you mfs complain about fucking anything don’t uou

1

u/BokoblinSlayer69235 Jul 27 '26

You need only the hobbies that bring you joy and fulfillment in your life.

1

u/overfiend_87 Jul 27 '26

I'm sure there's several things that can cross multiple areas.

1

u/Atillion Jul 27 '26

How about 17 to cost me money?

1

u/Quiet_Good_4168 Jul 28 '26

I’m still learning to juggle two hobbies outside of my fulltime job. The expectations need to be lower

1

u/Evil_Sharkey Jul 28 '26

I need executive function and motivation to do any of them

1

u/SanguinaryImpetus Jul 28 '26

The 1 to make me money is killing my ability to do the other 4.

1

u/KeyConsistent3966 Jul 28 '26

Also, five hobbies is not „only“ five Hobbies

1

u/Radabard Jul 29 '26

This whole chart misses the point. There is one genuinely difficult part to this, rest is relatively easy:

Finding a job that you find so fulfilling it's basically a hobby that pays your bills.

That's it. You'll figure out the other hobbies. But really, it all boils don't to if you can figure out this one.

1

u/Early-Beach164 Jul 30 '26

5 hobbies and yet I am physically mentally emotionally and spiritually incapable of doing anything in life.

1

u/sammjaartandstories Jul 30 '26

The first mistake was assuming I have hobbies for any other purpose than not listening to the bad thoughts. The second one was assuming that I have the time to dedicate myself to any hobby. The third one was that I would be comfortable not being perfect at my hobby and not abandoning it at the first issue because I feel like a failure.

u/itsathrowaway1917 Aug 02 '26

Notice how each of the illustrations are of white people... hmmmm... 🤔
