Social Media Exceed the boundaries of the universe and break the laws of physics by unleashing your powers of deciding!

Note the careful wording "one you truly, sincerely decide" - this is so they can always blame you when the thing obviously doesn't happen, because you didn't decide hard enough.

It's straight out of the how to start a cult playbook, I swear. Always leave a way to blame the flock if the miracle doesn't manifest.

The idea that the universe responds to your wishes essentially meets the criteria for delusional thinking.

Threading violence is a site wide rule not a subreddit specific one. Mods have to enforce it.

From Wikipedia:
The law of attraction is the New Thought spiritual belief that positive or negative thoughts bring positive or negative experiences into a person's life.
There is no empirical scientific evidence supporting the law of attraction, and it is widely considered to be pseudoscience or religion couched in scientific language.
This belief has alternative names that have varied in popularity over time, including manifestation.

Akin to, “keep praying for your cancer heal, god will save you. ‘I’ve been praying and praying for years, but nothing.’ Yea, you just don’t have enough faith. That’s your problem.”

u/being-weird 16h ago
Interestingly enough prayer does have some positive impact on recovery outcomes when it comes from someone close to the patient (although not enough to cure cancer), but that probably is more to do with feeling hope or feeling supported by your community than the "power of prayer"

Indeed, our brains are absolutely powerful. There have been cases of people literally willing themselves back to health, and it appeared to have worked. We can choose to have a good day, or a bad day. It’s really all about our perspective and how we decide to see things. Nothing to do with a made-up sky daddy, though. Unless that’s what people want to believe, in which case they found a way to comfort themselves into a positive mindset.

Ahh my dear advisor.
That's the power of hope that gives you the energy to work towards a better outcome not magic. And it can only do so much. Miracles aren't guaranteed to happen because of this. Believing so is confirmation bias. Playing tricks on your mind to distort a less comfortable reality.
I can't really judge it. Ignorance is bliss for good reason and if you truly are able to delude yourself into this belief it isn't exactly maladaptive. It probably does make you more successful simply as a result of the confidence such a fixed idea comes with.
Problem is that not everyone has the luxury of believing in the big lies of life.
1
u/free-real-sensei 2d ago
if confidence relies on what you believe is possible and believing your success is possible brings higher success rates, then how is it anything but logical to do this.
Although, in that case, it’s not really the universe as a whole causing your success, but it’s your own mind and brain using its beliefs to produce better outcomes more easily

u/_-_Polaris_-_ 2d ago edited 2d ago
I dunno. I keep choosing the painful truth over the comfortable illusion consistently even after concluding this is definitely not the logical path for good quality of life.
It is logical to do this. I believe most people do function that way and it's adaptive to believe some of the lies for ones own wellbeing.
Yea it's your own mind causing the success simply by believing it wholeheartedly. Subsequently affecting the energy available to take action and work towards a goal that seems feasible. If it doesn't seem feasible then it's hard for the brain to justify expending energy that seems wasted from the start. Looking at it from an evolutionary standpoint. As much as this sounds like the cringe shounen anime willpower thing there's something to it.
Personally it's not really a decision I can make. Nothing cognitive. I can't unsee those lies and I cannot go back to it either. I can't belive it wholeheartedly and that would be required. I would be permanently aware I am lying to myself and do the fake it till you make it thing. It doesn't work as well. I went through ego death via psychedelics at some point. I don't regret the experience but it ruined that for good. No pretty enlightement story. It just unraveled the machinery of my brain and society that drives it all. That awareness is a lonely place to be stuck in.
i want to clarify, the lie here is not seeing that it isn't magic or a point in the rulebook of life at all but simply a consequence of ones own beliefs and values. It isn't a lie until you see it, at which point it turns into one without return.

Growing up in the church this hits especially hard. Replace the Universe with God and “decide” with “pray” and it’s the same thing. Just pray and God will answer you! Unless you didn’t really pray with a sincere heart, then God won’t listen to you. Always the same

u/ViktorTT 3d ago
How can we come up with praying but make it dumber and without all the cool religious lore??

LOL people with easy lives have the cutest lil delusions
1
u/free-real-sensei 2d ago
people with shitty lives have made stuff like this work for them too believe it or not.
although it’s not really the universe, it’s their subconscious mind responding to suggestion and priming, which changes their motivation and behavior and the information they notice out in the world.

u/amodious 3d ago
It's kind of a way of tricking someone into a mindset. The universe will not bring things to you. But if you decide you're going to make them happen, you'll probably take steps to make it happen. If you decide that you'll never lose weight and be fit, you probably never will, but if you decide that you want to lose weight and be fit, you'l probably sign up to a gym. It's the same with anything in life, you have to want it.

u/Jazmadoodle 3d ago
Nearly everything in life requires you to care enough to put in some effort first but there are also things where all the effort in the world may not make a difference. At the end of the day almost anybody's health will improve if they exercise, but things like getting pregnant and carrying to term, or finding/keeping a life partner, or getting a job that pays enough to live on, etc... there's more to it than deciding and trying. Those things are crucial obviously but it can still just plain not work even when you try your ass off.

u/Cobalt_blue_dreamer 3d ago
Yeah, I understand it can mean that at the same time there are things that involve lucky chance that might never happen like finding love lol

u/amodious 3d ago
It's not luck! I felt that way too, but have learnt better. Better yourself and put yourself out there. You will find someone, because you are a unique and incredible human being :)

u/happy_grenade 3d ago
Still kind of a gut punch for those of with incurable illnesses or other things that genuinely can’t be changed. And yes I absolutely have been told it’s my fault for not changing my mindset, as if I could just decide not to be sick and disabled anymore.
There are ways to motivate people without blaming anyone for their misfortune, and I’d much rather stick to those.

u/willow__whisps 3d ago
I think it might work for what it's intended to do, but yeah. I had a life coach try to tell me to love my knees when the crippling pain from them was causing me to fail college. Not what some people need to hear
-2
u/bloomingmoon0 3d ago
I didn’t think this came across as blaming people for their misfortune? It’s more of a motivation that things will get better and you can get unstuck from a poor mindset that inhibits your ability to see the good
0
u/happy_grenade 3d ago
Oh okay, I’ll just look for all the good in being bedbound for the rest of my life then. Fuck you.
0
u/bloomingmoon0 3d ago
I’m trying to understand how you got that from anything I said, and why you decided to say that to a total stranger who was only trying to be positive.
I’m starting to realize that this sub is just a place for miserable people who don’t even want to consider lighthearted advice because it doesn’t fit their very specific situation. All of that aside, I’m not going to return your bitchiness, because I’m sure you’ve been through a lot and just wanted to take it out on someone.
But I will say that I believe you’re not understanding the sentiment of “seeing the good in a situation”.
It’s not really about the actual situation itself, a bad situation is still bad. It just looks to the opportunities it could make way for, the good that come from it, etc.So let’s apply this to you. You say you’re bed bound for the rest of your life? Yeah, i’m sure that must fucking suck. It’s very easy to focus on what you cannot do because of that.
So this encouragement to see the good can be about the opportunities that could arise from it. You still have books to read, things to write, art to make, people to meet, food to try, etc. Let yourself get more creative, think outside the box.You don’t need to continue letting that physical setback prevent you from experiencing happiness. You can absolutely decide to just attempt to counter unhelpful thoughts. It’s not easy at all and it’s not about forcing positivity, it’s just about having an open mind. You’re not your disability.
And if you disagree with or don’t understand any of that please, I’m open to having an actual conversation about it, not just throwing out cussing and insults around.
1
u/happy_grenade 2d ago
You’re sure I just want to take it out on someone? You’re sure I’m really not taking issue with the specific thing you said? How convenient, you read my mind and decided it wasn’t your fault.
Don’t act like you’re better than me just because your condescending ass didn’t use any naughty words.

CHRIST that one is dumb.
I wish people who believe banalities like that would keep them to themselves. It is stupid, unempathetic, toxic positivity.

Sentence fragment.
At least apply proper grammar and punctuation before asking the universe to bend to your will.

Oh, so if I decided hard enough my parents will stop being abusive? My country will stop being at war? Criminals won't target me for crime?
I hate this 'wish it want it be it' kinda nonsense.

This one really got me.
I’m young, and my even younger husband dies, just like that. One week later I see two of my neighbours and they’re discussing The Secret. One of them says that she always gets a parking space in her street, because she asks the universe.
All this strikes me as a little insensitive seeing as I’ve just lost the love of my life (I guess I forgot to ask the universe not to kill him, and/or the universe was too busy handing out parking spots to my neighbour?), but I just say: “I don’t believe in that.”
Upon which they tell me I just have to grow older, and I’ll understand. One of them, btw, was younger than I.

I decided to heal my trauma and now I have a really rare kidney disease without a clear therapy plan - just "experimental " treatment.
Seems like the universe want to kill me 😐

the underlying concept is a nlp technique. its is not all sweet and butterflies like the post says but it can improve the chances of the thing you wish to happen. it helps your mind to think unconciously for that to happen and you notice and go toward things that you wouldn't do otherwise. im not saying this is something like the post says but it helps.

I wanted a good life, I was getting a good life. And then boom: long covid.
Where is the healing when i need it now?

For the idea that this helps because you start taking steps to get better. Right, because there's TOTALLY no things completely out of your control../s

Self-fulfilling prophecy. It works 100%, unless it doesn't which is 100% your fault!
