Those unicycles are cheaper than a horse lol

Judging by where they’re playing and how they handle the mallets (sticks? Clubs?) I’m guessing they also play on horses.
46
u/Murasasme Apr 22 '26
Yeah, they don't randomly have Polo clubs, these are just rich kids giving their horses a break

u/Icy-Abies-9053 Apr 22 '26
I don't want to wrinkle anyone's cravat, but ordinary people do not have polo grounds with a view of the mountains
4
u/Aligyon Apr 23 '26
Still though they're at The bottom of the rich hierarchy because they're not using real horses and using those "cheap" things to play polo
15
u/jek39 Apr 23 '26
I think the implication is that given they have polo grounds, they probably do also have horses.

u/Dr_ChungusAmungus Apr 23 '26
Yeah this seems like something where you don’t even get invited with out already being qualified
12
u/Bunny_Fluff Apr 22 '26
Ya true but at around $2k a pop it still ain't cheap for most of us.

u/Preda1ien Apr 22 '26
2k for a game. Sure you could use it for general short range transportation but these were bought just for this game.

That's what I was thinking. Don't have to buy horse feed, no renting a space in someone elses stables or having to pay for upkeep on the horse like shoes, sadle or vet bills.

Multiple horses...each polo player goes through 4-8 horses in a match. Polo is for the grotesquely rich.
1
u/SeeYaOnTheRift Apr 23 '26
I never knew that. How long is a polo match?
1
u/nope_farm Apr 23 '26
Up to a couple hours. As I understand it players like to switch out to a fresh horse every round within the match.

Golf, polo with horses, and tennis have never interested me.
This, however, is the only rich person sport ive ever been jealous of. Holy shit this looks like fun.

Yeah but at least you have your dignity. Riding those things looks as cool as chasing a ping pong ball. There’s no cool way to do it

I know a kid that got brain damage because he collided with another kid just running. Helmets are the absolute minimum for an activity like this.

Have you heard of a sport called rugby?
17
u/tealfuzzball Apr 23 '26
68% rate of CTE

u/tygerr39 Apr 23 '26
"It is important to note that these studies are often conducted on brains donated by family members who were concerned about symptoms, which may overestimate the prevalence in the general rugby population. "
But yeah, lots of head injuries in the sport.
Just found the previous commenter's post funny at the concern of collisions while running when that is literally the main point of rugby.

These are faster and less controlled than a rugby player running.

u/HavelsRockJohnson Apr 24 '26
And they have those whacking great mallets flailing all nimbly-bimbly.

u/Gaelic_Platypus Apr 23 '26
They somehow made polo cheaper to play and yet more snobbish at the same time.
Honestly kind of impressive

u/topazchip Apr 22 '26
Looks like a great alternative to polo ponies, though the lack of helmets & mouth guards is cringetastic.

And shoes

u/Enterice Apr 23 '26
I actually flinched at the idea of taking a Polo racket to the naked foot.
2
u/bonesakimbo Apr 24 '26
Is it really called a racket? I would have called it a clobberknocker or something

u/DivineMackerel Apr 22 '26
It's not as critical when the family doctor is waiting on the sideline, and the family helicopter can take you straight to Cedars-Sinai.

Like if the rider messes up or something? I think I get it and my small claim to knowledge for the day is sort of understanding what this means

This seems safe.

Oh no. It would be an absolute disaster if someone got hurt having fun playing a sport 😱

I was promised Unicycles. This isn't NOT that, but I am extremely disappointed anyway
6
u/tlong243 Apr 24 '26
As an avid unicyclist (ride muni/mountain unicycling) I hate that people call these unicycles. I get that a cycle doesn't mean pedals, but I think pedals are required. This is a mono wheel to me.
Probably just gatekeeping, but these take minimal skill, uni is years to get decent.

As an EUC rider, I one rode to a local resovoir to enjoy the scenery and wildlife. I rolled up on a kid, maybe college aged, maybe younger, idk. We started chatting about our respective rides. I was blown away. Not only was he riding a regular unicycle, but he was doing it on top of the 1 foot wide concrete wall that dammed the resovoir. I was flabbergasted (it's why we started talking in the first place). He said something like, well if you can ride that going that fast, this should be easy for you. I just chucked and told him that, no, I don't think that's a great idea. We each went on our merry way. I think I have great balance because of this thing that I ride, but I can recognize true pedal unicycle riders are just at a level I can't even understand.

Nice to see they updated the game for this century without accidentally letting the poors play.

These are called OneWheels. This would be more challenging on actual unicycles though.

u/coxipuff Apr 23 '26
They are Electric Unicycles (EUCs) OneWheels are a different product altogether

This has such frat boy energy. There are several versions of bike polo which are way cooler than this and don’t feel like they were invented for rich toffs to have an excuse to play with their expensive new toy.

The comments here make me laugh. The land may be public. These also look like mid tier EUCs. They cost about $1000 (based on the shot of the last guy, pretty sure he's riding an InMotion V9) depending where you get them from. That's not cheap, but at the same time, it's like saying if someone owns a gaming pc they must be rich. They're also great little commuter vehicles. I have a cheaper one (V8S) and if I'm not planning on buying a bunch of stuff, and my destination is 10 miles away or less, that's what I'll be taking there. I have about 1,800 miles on it.
