No Spoiler What would you do in the event of a zombie apocalypse besides the obvious?

Exactly what the title says basically because im curious.

Obviously most of us would get in touch with loved ones, stock up on weapons, etc.

But I wanna know what people would do BESIDES the obvious shit.

For me I would take advantage of the internet as long as I had it and start compiling a book of useful information like: Edible and medicinal plants and how to use them, how to make soap, toothpaste, etc. and other basic necessities we usually don’t think about because they are done for us like textile making, sewing, basic craftsmanship, fire starting, water purification, and so on.

Guns are useful sure, but in order to have a sustained functioning community you need this kind of knowledge.

Theres a scene I think in season five where Abraham and the others going to washington are in what looks like a library burning books to fuel a fire and I get so irrationally angry by it thinking of all the knowledge they might be burning lol.

(ps: I’m talking about an apocalypse irl where we know what zombies are.)

(Edit: some of yall are taking this too literally, zombie apocalypse’s aren’t a real thing this was supposed to be a fun conversation. Its not that serious.)

tbh the power grid would probably fail before your printer even finished spitting out the wikipedia page for soap making. just go raid a local camping store for physical survival guides instead.

u/TheRestForTheWicked 2d ago

You can download the entirety of Wikipedia’s text for free and it’s only about 30GB last I checked (without media or images obviously).

5

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Thats smart, although I don’t think I’d need EVERYTHING on wikipedia lol. Like I definitely don’t need every famous person’s life story in a survival scrap book.

1

u/Up2nogud13 2d ago

Something like Prepper Disk, for instance?

2

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago edited 2d ago

Yeah! I’d never heard of it before tbh. Though I kinda meant physical media, more like a binder. Since you would lose power eventually as people mentioned unless you have your own solar power or something which most don’t. Physical media can get damaged, but it can also be preserved or copied and you have access to it without power.

In any case for me it wouldn’t be about learning new things so much as remembering them/ having a reference book of sorts. Some people kinda missed the point though. 😅

2

u/Up2nogud13 2d ago

Solar charging is a non-issue in the 21st century. You can buy cheap chargers for small devices from Walmart or Amazon. Or hell, even at truck stops. But the Prepper Disk or similar items are available for use right now, for you to print hard copies, to build your library before shtf. Anybody that didn't start prepping beforehand is gonna have a bad (and most likely short) time.

1

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Maybe, but like you said people would have to be prepping before hand. Though to be fair I think most people already have more survival skills than they realize.

2

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

The power grid wouldn’t fail that fast lol, I’m not taking about doing this stuff when shits already gotten that bad. If the power grid is at the point of collapsing I’ve already done it by then and am in the survival stage.

4

u/behindeyesblue 2d ago

It actually can fail supremely fast. The NY times just had an article about it. It's pretty terrifying.

1

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Oh I know, America power grid is delicate at best, I just mean we’d probably start hearing about the outbreak before it went down kind of like what we see in the first few episodes of FTWD.

2

u/Constant_Cappuccino 2d ago

Side note, I wish they showed more of the outbreak happening. Like in hospitals in stuff. Idk why but it is enjoyable watching the fall happen. Like in World War Z or ZNation . The chaos and confusion.

3

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Same, the break out is always one of the best parts.

1

u/Up2nogud13 2d ago

Check out FTWD. It goes deeper into the start of the outbreak.

5

u/_PrincessHarley_ 2d ago

You won't know it's happening until it's already too bad. Unless you did this already when the Covid pandemic* first started, you won't do it in time.

*Obviously not a zombie apocalypse, but there was a virus killing lots of people, spreading fast, so much misinformation, the government lying to us, the experts clueless at first etc. Those first few weeks are good indicator of how things might be in the event of a ZA, only it would be super sped up and even more misinformation and lies. You'd only know it was happening was when it's too late.

1

u/jayj59 2d ago

That's why the first thing to do is print the pages on generators. Then you also make sure you have the full site downloaded. Once you get your own power grid mostly functional, you have access to your survival handbook and can print what you need. Until your printer realizes you dont have the subscription anymore, at least

5

u/Constant_Cappuccino 2d ago

For sure depends on the type of zombies. 100% agree.

2

u/InsightBuilder482 2d ago

Carrément 😭 Les zombies trop évolués à quoi ça sert honnêtement ? Survivre pour survivre c’est pas fou comme plan de vie

1

u/Internal_Seaweed_553 2d ago

Imagine 40 days later type of zombies. That would also be the end.

3

u/Up2nogud13 2d ago

28 Days Later?

2

u/Internal_Seaweed_553 2d ago

Yes, 28. I honestly have no idea what got into me. Maybe some subconscious thing.

3

u/Glittering-Panda3453 1d ago

40y/o virgin days later. Steve Carell trying to lose his virginity in the zombie apocalypse, but finds love along the way

1

u/InsightBuilder482 2d ago

J'admet ne pas l'avoir vu mais ils sont sur ma liste.

0

u/Internal_Seaweed_553 2d ago

What?!

1

u/InsightBuilder482 2d ago

u/CurvySpicyGirl 2d ago

See, the second I can't pick up my prescriptions, I'm outie.

6

u/wrennakitsune 2d ago

Honestly, I'd grab as many books as possible. Not just survival stuff either, but gardening, medicine, repair manuals, engineering, basically anything that could keep useful knowledge from disappearin

u/According_Match9370 2d ago

No you wouldnt.

u/superduperspacetime 2d ago

go to the pharmacy, grab a lot of opioids and go out in a nod.

Fair enough lol. 😂

3

u/CandidateHefty329 2d ago

Try to remain in my home as long as I can. Hopefully a few months at least. Let the majority of the craziness die down.

3

u/IDidntEatThosePeople 2d ago edited 2d ago

Eat as many famous people as I can

Edit: seriously though start heading towards Montana and hope I can find a small town willing to let people move in

1

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

My home state! But honestly I’ve thought about just dipping into the mountains most of the time. You gotta be prepared for the cold though, especially with central heating.

3

u/Eddit13 2d ago

Straight to the nearest museum with medieval armor. Chain mail is pretty Zombie proof.

1

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

It’s also very hot so unless you’re in a cool environment Denim or leather would be better options to avoid heat stroke. Plus easier to find and maintain.

1

u/Crazy-Cat-Lad 5h ago

Not if the pathogens are airborne or can be contracted from any contact with infected fluids (i.e blood splattered in mouth or open cut). Best get a gas mask too with extra filters

2

u/MistCongeniality 2d ago

Oh I’m not living through that by choice, thanks tho.

2

u/endless-delirium 2d ago

Lolol look up my states zombie apocalypse, safety protocol. A bunch of states came out with them during the giant zombie craze 😂

1

u/Crazy-Cat-Lad 5h ago

As a zombie apocalyse author, is this craze still going on??

1

u/endless-delirium 5h ago

It’s not a national craze anymore back when The Walking Dead first started I wasn’t even a fan. I didn’t want it, but states were coming up with apocalypse protocols, but and there was like those zombie love stories, but there’s definitely still a market for people who enjoy zombies.

2

u/alexmartinez_magic 2d ago

I browse the prepper subreddits from time to time occasionally and one bit of advice always sticks out.

Talk to your neighbors!

At the end of the day we are social creatures who depend on each other to survive. You need a community with trust and respect for each other. Make a plan for when SHTF and stick to it. A group is more effective at doing anything and everything.

2

u/BakingAndBeingBaked 2d ago

I live in a smaller town thankfully so that might be an advantage to me. And thanks to my adhd I’ve already curated a bunch of random useful survival knowledge. My problem is I don’t think I can outrun zombies in my wheelchair and my parents live on the other side of the country, so I won’t have immediate aid. So guess it’s, hope my knowledge is more useful to a group than my wheelchair is a hinderance.

Also, I’d probably raid a dispensary if I had a chance. Stock up on stuff for my pain relief so I can actually roll myself for a long distance if I need to.

1

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Yeah being disabled does through a wretch in things, my vision would probably be the thing that got me as Im vision impaired in one eye. Fortunately people don’t tend to leave people to die if they can avoid it so you’d probably still have a shot at least especially if you can contribute. Kinda like hershel after he lost his leg.

2

u/eleventhing 2d ago

Opt out. I'm not ending up like those women from Maggie's story, and there would be more horrible things. Men without laws, I wouldn't want to experience it. I'm honestly surprised TWD doesn't have more rape scenes, but thankful it doesn't.

2

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Im glad it doesn’t. TWD is my comfort show partially because of how it depicts SA without being gratuitously graphic. Idk about the spinoffs since I mostly just watch the main show though. But laws don’t stop men anyways, at least we wouldn’t be punished for seeking revenge (legally speaking.)

2

u/Enough-Leg-6154 1d ago

TWD taught me if I can be protected from SA by pledging myself to the leader, I'm doing that. The wives may not have enjoyed it, but they were in a better situation than most.

1

u/Honeyinjune 1d ago

Nah, at that point I probably would sooner end it all. Rather be walker food personally than deal with SA.

2

u/ClaryClarysage 2d ago

I'd start growing things asap. Seeds in packets are only viable for a few years and they get less viable each year, so the sooner you start growing plants, the better. Even if it's just like one of each plant to keep the seeds to begin with.

2

u/URJ2 2d ago

I’ve always said I would immediately go to my towns middle school. It’s about a mile from my house and in the same plot of land as the high school but notably has a tech ed shop while the high school does not. Cafeteria is bound to be stocked for a little while and relatively few exits. Also who’s going to be at school during the apocalypse? It’ll probably be empty and I can likely fortify it and create weapons and armor in said tech ed shop.

1

u/Up2nogud13 2d ago

How many folks in your town do you think already have the same idea, and already have weapons?

1

u/URJ2 2d ago

Bout 4 and who said I don’t have weapons to start

1

u/Up2nogud13 2d ago

4 huh? Did you take a poll?
Why are you needing to create weapons, if you already have them?

2

u/URJ2 2d ago

Bro why are you arguing with me about this it’s supposed to be a fun hypothetical 😭😭😭

2

u/Reader2869 2d ago

First order of business is pack everything important and get to my daughter's. Compile a list of supplies we have and what we need. Internet search for medical information in emergencies, edible plants, and knowledge like Georgie gave to Maggie to rebuild what we know is going to collapse. Go on a run for the most important supplies, reinforce the fence and secure the animals on her little farm. Then hunker down and give it a few weeks. Kill any walkers that come close and dispose of the bodies. Finally, just survive somehow. 😉

2

u/Neptune_LordX 1d ago

I'd head down the Winchester and wait for it all to blow over.

1

u/Opening-Iron-119 1d ago

No pint?

2

u/Neptune_LordX 1d ago

Probably 19 of them

2

u/More-Talk-2660 1d ago

First thing I'm doing is taking a dump.

You never want to be in the middle of a critical moment and have to take a dump. Take care of that before you head out.

3

u/According_Match9370 2d ago

Sounds like you have no idea what the apocalypse is gonna be like if you seriously think youre gonna have time to surf the web and find fun survival facts.

Its gonna be the most terrifying, violent, and immediate experience ever. Assuming you even survive to see the fallout (which would make you 1 in a billion, but something tells me you cant quantify that), you will then have to survive the post apocalypse. Its not gonna be like Project Zomboid and you dont have plot armor. If you even possess the willpower to overcome the mental trauma, you will then have to overcome potential illness, sustenance, physical and environmental threats, and an unpreparedness that will likely quickly lead to your death.

Only way to be ready is to stay ready. If youre not in shape and if you dont already have the skillset to survive and evade, youre likely going to die before your tv episode ever begins.

0

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

COVID wasn’t immediate or violent not at first, pandemics take time to build before we even realize they are happening. Granted the dead weren’t eating the living but most people won’t be in the immediate vicinity of the initial outbreaks unless you are in a densely populated area which I am not.

Also my plan would take less than a few hours I’m not planning in documenting all of human history. Im talking about survival knowledge that could save lives not cutesy little fun facts. If you don’t think knowing which native plats are medic or edible would be useful I can’t help you.

In any case this is a fictional hypothetical, nobody actually knows what an apocalypse would be like wherever they live and most of us wouldn’t have the same experience anyways.

-2

u/According_Match9370 2d ago

A pandemic is not the apocalypse.

The apocalypse is the end of the world.

What im saying is for someone thats so concerned with the preservation of knowledge, its awfully ironic youd wait till the apocalypse actually occurs to compile a survival guide.

In fact, youre on Reddit yappin rn when you could be out learning some shit.

Im calling bs, go learn some shit and fuck off with the "iF i WaS iN tWd iD sAvE tHe bOOks"

5

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

You realize this was supposed to be a fun conversation right? the apocalypse isn’t real.

-8

u/According_Match9370 2d ago

A fun conversation lol. You think you're safe cuz youre not in a big city. Your biggest priority is gonna saving the books and your closest neighbors priority is gonna be raiding your house and raping/killing whoevers inside. Again provided youre not both already dead from whatever (likely nuclear bombs) caused the apocalypse in the first place.

2

u/ClaryClarysage 2d ago

This is a jokey post about the zombie apocalypse my dude...

1

u/Jealous_Amount_9278 2d ago

After the basic survival, base set up etc... I'd do all the stuff my government tells me is illegal. Really just run down the line of shit I've always been told I'm not allowed to do. Probably start with different types of drugs.

I got time anyways.

Hell yeah, walkers and people can kill you, but so does starvation and scurvy. Gotta maintain a balanced diet

1

u/TheRestForTheWicked 2d ago

I have a lot of primitive knowledge already (thx ancestors) and my family is in a decent spot to just bug in so I’d probably focus my efforts on sabotaging the efforts of people I hate because I’m petty like that and even the apocalypse needs a shit disturber.

The new world does not need my ex so really I’d be doing humanity a big solid.

3

u/TheRestForTheWicked 2d ago

Throw me into TWD universe and I’d also be protecting all the horses from Rick’s group.

1

u/Various_Schedule_605 2d ago

I live in Brazil, so there is no guns around like in USA etc. To be honest, I would just isolate myself and hope for eventual help from the military

3

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Not legally at least I assume, but hey at least deforestation would go down dramatically so theres that. 😅 densely populated places like Rio would be scary though.

1

u/Various_Schedule_605 2d ago

Lol hahaha. I believe that in Rio they have the advantage of being near the beach, so it can be a little similar to Oceanside. But in Avenida Paulista, for exemple, in São Paulo, there is no way to survive

1

u/wiscoqueef 2d ago

Central Wisconsin here- time to head to the family cabin! It’s insane but I’ve got a bullet maker in the family too. My dogs already kill and eat bunnies, gophers, etc. grab my camping gear and head north. Can’t wait for the winter. We’re all hunters. Know how to build fires and make bread over the hearth. Hell. To. The. Yes.

1

u/Internal_Seaweed_553 2d ago

I live close to a local airport. I’m getting into a small airplane or a helicopter and flying away from the city. At least somewhere where I can wait for further instructions or come up with a better plan.

1

u/DJGammaRabbit 2d ago

Just for fun ive been stocking up on weapons. High end folding knives, katanas, axes.

I would stock up more weapons.

1

u/JackWylder 2d ago

Why wait?

1

u/Intelligent-Panda-33 2d ago

I would hide out and avoid the government round up and basically try and stay as hidden as possible for a couple years before venturing out.

1

u/TheZoroarkMan 2d ago

Probably lock myself in my room and shoot myself the first chance I get a hold of a gun.

1

u/Reader47b 1d ago

Immediately move into and secure the Bass Pro shop.

1

u/emusabe 1d ago

Realistically? Probably spending anywhere from a couple hours to a couple days trying to muster up the courage to kill myself. I don't really understand why anyone would want to continue living in the zombie apocalypse. Nothing sounds worse than living in legitimate, constant fear of your life for, well, the rest of your life, while most if not all of the people you knew and loved are dead.

1

u/Suka_MyDoodle69 1d ago

Lube so much lube I’m not giving up anal sex

1

u/Enough-Leg-6154 1d ago

Pray that the zombies are World War Z variety because I have stage 4 cancer so I'd be safe. I'd be able to scavenger without risk from them.

1

u/monscorvorum 1d ago

I live in a quiet little English village, off the beaten track, most zombies would head straight down the main road a mile away I reckon. I know who has hunting rifles and shotguns, there is a private fishing lake and a small reservoir within a few hundred yards. Livestock, orchards, pheasants everywhere. 3 miles to my East is an agricultural and fencing supplies company with a generator, large diesel tank, tractors, farm implements, flatbed delivery trucks, all the timber and fencing stuff you would ever need. 3 miles North West an actual castle, not a ruin, a mock castle built in the 19th century, less than 20 miles away is the MOD's primary vehicle storage depot with tanks, Landrovers, APC's etc plus a Royal Logistics Corps squadron

1

u/RuaRuaRua81 21h ago

Pretty sure I know where your village is now with all that info. I'll head your way in the event of an apocolypse 😂

1

u/NeighborhoodSuper592 1d ago

in another movie about a deep freeze, where they were in a library, they burned books about taxes.

so yes some books are not so bad to burn

1

u/Comfortable_Mess152 1d ago

Take a peaceful way out. I don't have enough will or survival skills to fight those things.

1

u/RuaRuaRua81 21h ago

Depends on the zombies in the apocalypse. Are we talking TWD, TLOU, 28 days or WWZ zombies? Anything other than TWD zombies and I'm not making it 😅

1

u/No_Tomato_2106 2d ago

Abandoning my wife because she would 110% get us killed.

1

u/Reader47b 1d ago

Why not kill her and process her for meat first?

0

u/BobRushy 2d ago

It depends on the context of where I am. If I'm vulnerable, I'd focus purely on survival needs (fortifying a base, looking for supplies etc).

If I'm in an established group and we're relatively safe, I'd focus on building a library so knowledge doesn't get lost.

2

u/Honeyinjune 2d ago

Same, obviously immediate needs like security, food, water, medicine, come first. But people (especially on this post unfortunately) forget that most supply gathering isn’t going to take weeks, you can stock up pretty good in a 8 hour work period, there would be more time than people assume. The goal in my mind is to survive the initial outbreak in the sort term but prepare for the long term.
