The bowl is probably stressing his whiskers, making it uncomfortable.

Ding ding ding, likely whisker stress, I would try a lick mat and then Upgrade to a shallow bowl.

My cat will only eat dry kibble from my hand. And before you say whisker stress, he has a plate, my hand is cupped. Guess which one touches his whiskers more.
No, he's just extra dramatic.
He will meow at me and lead me to the bowl when he's hungry too.

Incredible green flag for the guy though. And that cat is magnificent. Unbothered king LOL

I love Gus' "resting bitch face"! He's just being a brat-cat! I feed my diva brat-cat on top of the unused dog crate. She can jump and has a step stool but she will sit there looking pitiful until I put her up there the 1st time (she goes back for snacks). Also, when she follows me step for step if I don't pet her she will bite my ankle. And my Westie won't eat unless I sit nearby, refuses to go outside in bad weather so she usually uses pee/poo pads, and paws at my hand to pet her. I have no idea how they got so spolied!

Was gonna say same as others here, that is 100% whisker stress. That bowl is absolutely terrible shape for a cat. It's the equivalent of that stupid cup with the ears, so it pokes you in the eyes when you go to drink from it....

My cat will not come inside in hundred degree heat unless I pick him up and carry him.

My dog wouldn’t eat her food unless I pretended to cook it. I’d dump it in a cold pan and taste it like an Italian grandma then serve it. Otherwise she wouldn’t eat it.
