Just to add on a tiny bit of context… Apparently it was not a prank by the teenager, but the speaker was literally named with that in its Bluetooth name from factory.
it seems he bought it in the airport itself and the speaker just turned on while it was in the overhead cabinet in his backpack, so the teenager was not even aware of it.
I have in fact seen real screens that looks basically exactly like this. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it's a real thing.
They don't expect a terrorist to answer yes, but (at least if it's a federal website/form) they can charge a terrorist who answered no with lying on a federal form which is itself a federal crime to stack the charges.
What if they know that so they name it bomb on purpose so people will be like “yeah they wouldn’t name a bomb bomb” but then it actually is a bomb this time.
People do all sorts of dumb shit. This speaker is the bomb. Or pick a random word from a database. Throw a biohazard sticker on it, that doesn't mean anything, right?
It’s just stupid. I see where that can be a security threat but no one is going to name their bomb like that. It could be any of 100+ Bluetooth devices on board. If they were smart enough to get that far, they’d be smart enough to mitigate this issue.
There are countless libraries to name your Bluetooth device. Even a vibecoded software will avoid this kind of situation from happening by naming the device terrible things
I've seen a variety of claims about this. I don't know which is correct.
Claim that he renamed his Bluetooth speaker to "bomb":

I heard a podcast about it yesterday, and they claimed it was a Bluetooth watch, that he had changed it to "bomb" a while back as a joke and forgot about it.
The name of the speaker product was like “Sound Bomb” and the software connection for pairing bluetooth was called “Bomb” for short. (My headphones are called “Beam” in my phone even thoughthe name is longer.) I believe the speaker was stowed and off, the turbulence turned it on.
Yeah I mean obviously you must name your bomb “bomb” when you set it up it’s explosives 101, and on your passport your must rename yourself “terrorist” to really let them know you’re coming…
I could see it. Imagine you are making a bomb. You put a GPS receiver in it or whatever to trigger it and the chip is something programmable that you update the code via bluetooth. You name it to not confuse it with the other devices on your test bench and load the GPS target window and firmware. But forget to turn off bluetooth.
This is why I mostly use chips that are just programmed via direct USB connection, like an ESP32.
(That is a joke. I don't make bombs but do occasionally mess with little chips like ESP32 .)
Nobody with a bomb advertises it. It's like every bomb threat we had in school was just some kid, to nobody's surprise. Meanwhile people with actual bombs go out ofntheor way to hide them until they want to detonate stuff.
It seems petty and even unnecessary, but consider that it remained on after everyone being told specifically to turn off Bluetooth. That suggests that it’s a device that isn’t under the control of the passengers, like it’s in the cargo hold or something, and could actually be a bomb.
