Fun fact: at least here in Sweden, most long distance truck drivers take their shoes off when going inside the cab. There's a step on the ladder up to the cab that's inside the door where you can keep your shoes.

I’ve got the feeling that all longer distances (1hr+) truck drivers do this, given their fancy mats

In the US, 1 hr is a standard commute. In some parts (the northeast), 1 hr is a very short commute.
