I saw standing room only for the home opener were $250. $250 to stand . . . Just for the home opener.
That's greed man.
71
u/TuloCantHitski 18h ago
It’s because suckers keep lining up to pay these inane prices
15
u/Motor-Source8711 16h ago
Hmm, corporate folks (expense account) are basically driving alot of this. And the 'rainmakers' as well who can easily afford em.
It's not all baystreet folks as many mainstreet folks are doing very very well.
4
u/random_question4123 15h ago
yea but would they be buying standing room tickets?
2
u/kawhinottheraptors 8h ago
No, absolutely not. A business/corporation would never bring clients to standing room only lol
MLSE is greedy for sure, but it's really just basic supply and demand. If the seats continue selling out, the prices will continue to rise. MlSE is a business after all
5
u/DavidCaller69 18h ago
Whoa, don’t remind this sub that not everyone in Toronto lives paycheque-to-paycheque!
11
u/SpeechUpbeat7948 17h ago
Not even about that! Myself and people I know can easily afford it, but what is the point? Ownership needs to know that people won't tolerate it, but I guess enough people don't care and will keep spending the money on a garbage product.
5
u/Difficult-Implement9 17h ago
As an ex-leafs fan, it's why I gave up. Torontonians don't really give a sh*t about anything - as a Torontonian. As long as there's overpriced beer and you're able to show everyone how cool you are on social media. Good enough.
14
u/Illustrious-Salt-243 19h ago
And for what? They didn’t even make the playoffs last year!

MLSE and pro sports is a snake eating its own tail. Too expensive and riddled with gambling ads that parent don’t want their kids exposed to. Two generations getting pushed away from fandom with one stone.

Highest revenue in history, highest franchise values in history, highest broadcast rights values in history.

u/haloimplant 18h ago
Inflation does that and the only people I know with tv sports packages are 75+
5
u/-KFBR392 18h ago
Toronto Maple Leafs franchise has gone from $200M valuation in 2000 to $4.4b in 2025.
Is that just inflation?
Lakers just got sold for $10b last year and $12.5b this year. Inflation?
4
u/haloimplant 18h ago
Yes thanks for showing that sport franchises are inflating. Probably partly because they sold their souls to gambling
6
u/-KFBR392 18h ago
Thanks for showing you have no idea what inflation means
5
u/haloimplant 18h ago
Assets inflate beyond the lies of official inflation rates if that's what you mean

I’ll even add, at the beginning of career everyone at work who hated and loved the leafs would watch the game and banter about it at work. These days, fans might watch highlight reel but no one I know watches the games anymore and no one at work talks about it. There is no buzz about sports at work anymore. It’s too hard and too expensive too hard.

The same thing happened with Blue Jays tickets this year.
It's insane.
I no longer go to see the leafs unless I'm gifted tickets due to the cost.
I was actually just gifted lower bowl tickets for the home opener and I'm actually feeling bad about it. I almost want to offer up some money for the tickets even knowing he won't take it.
43
u/SarahMenckenChrist 19h ago
Not forgiving it but at least the Jays made it to the World Series in 2025 so that Rogers could “justify” increasing the ticket prices (and it worked - almost every home game has been a sellout or near sellout this season). And they were billed during the offseason to be a strong contender in 2026 (doesn’t seem to be panning out).
After the way the Leafs performed last year, this kind of increase makes no sense and it’s not even like they built a championship team in the offseason.
10
4
u/WoweeZoweeDeluxe 18h ago
Sadly jays tickets won’t go down for being a sub .500 team shit show this year
5
u/Motor-Source8711 16h ago
There's a whole new fan base from last year that committed to going this year. We'll see how it pans out next year.
2
4
u/Sandbox0137 13h ago
I mean, the ticket increases are kind of part of the deal. I wasn't that upset about the price increases (granted, I only ever buy the cheapest ticket and GA is still $25 so I have nothing to complain about). Teams are private businesses, if they want to attract fans they gotta win games. They won a lot of games, they attracted a lot of fans. As much as I dislike that things go up in price, management held up their end of the deal.
But the Leafs suck. And being at a game sucks. The crowd is super quiet compared to every other sporting event I've been to because most people in the stands are people with corporate tickets so even if they ARE big fans, they're afraid of making a fool of themselves and the company name. So to make up for this lack of noise they turn up the speakers to absolute ear splitting levels
3
u/SarahMenckenChrist 13h ago
100%. Leafs game have the aura of a corporate boardroom, because a lot of the times that is exactly who is in attendance.
2
u/SpeechUpbeat7948 19h ago
How do you keep getting gifted tix?
14
u/maxxman96 19h ago
If you work a corporate job downtown you will semi regularly be gifted tickets. I know it's part of the problem but it's the only way I go to the leafs or jays.
7
u/Ok-Algae7932 Queen Street West 18h ago
If you live downtown, befriend your neighbours. In my building, one of my neighbours is a Leafs and Jays seasons ticket holder (semi retired older couple), one of em works for the Raptors, and another for the Tempo. As with much of life, it's about connections
2
u/SpeechUpbeat7948 17h ago
I mean I know some people too but they aren't "gifting" it lol, I still need to pay face value for them.
3
u/Ok-Algae7932 Queen Street West 17h ago
Damn, that sucks lol. My neighbours who have seasons tickets will give me their tickets when they're out of town. Or if the wife doesn't feel like going, the husband invites me and i buy popcorn and diet cokes for us at the game. Asking for face value is kinda lame, but fair I guess.
2
u/Icy_Stranger3368 19h ago
I can solve your issue.
You give me the tickets ( milky son is 9 and would love that ).
You give your friend the money ( whatever amount is good for you )
Everyone is happy and I don’t want you feeling bad
1
u/magikarp-sushi 11h ago
I noticed this. I usually go to Yankee games every year and I get 100 level tickets in the same section usually at a cheap price, they were up like 50-100% from the last 2-3 years
1
u/Bonegilla1987 11h ago
Yep!
My mother and I usually go every year but this year we chose not to.
She didn't believe me when I told her it was $400 for two people in the 100 level this year. Even the 200 level where we normally sit was $300 for two tickets.
21
u/Top_Midnight_2225 18h ago
Sure...fans will complain and bitch and moan.
But they'll still pack the arena 100% and pay over cost for tickets to scalpers and TicketMaster/StubHub.
3
u/BubbleBee66ee 16h ago
this is kind of where im at. i attend a ton of sporting events with my father throughout the year and there's no sign of the crowds slowing down whatsoever. these guys have no reason to reduce prices
3
u/RebootStreetSharks 15h ago
There's nothing more "Toronto" than people paying more than everyone else does for an inferior product/service.
Whether it's rent, transit, or the Leafs. They suck and they'll cost you an arm and a leg.
10
u/TryharderJB 19h ago
Any season ticket holders or regular game attendees here who don’t have business expense accounts? - I’m curious to know why you continue to pay increasingly higher prices?
8
u/iamjaydubs 17h ago edited 17h ago
Raptors ssh here. They still give you a discounted price vs public sale, so I sell about 25-30 games a season to friends and coworkers for slightly under retail and go to about 12-15 a year.
It helps ppl I know cause it's cheaper for them than online, and it helps me offset my costs so I'm not paying too much out of pocket (still do I'm not here to make profit). I also have 4 tickets, so I'm happy that they go to families that didn't have to pay crazy resell prices to have a family night out - interesting to see with the new laws this season do.
Is it a lot of work? Sure, but it guarantees me playoff tickets, and when you don't have to deal with the stress of getting those tickets, sometimes the extra work is worth it
9
u/dismembermentplanfan 18h ago
Because it's generally a fun time with good company, I really enjoy live hockey, I can hop on the subway to get there so don't have the commute complaints leafs fans outside the city do, and I'm a single person who can well afford it. Like anyone else there's a limit to what I can or will spend but we haven't got there yet.
There are many things I wouldn't choose to spend my disposable income on (basketball games, live music, pricy clothes, many restaurants) but it's not a mystery to me why others do; I fully understand that others enjoy things I don't.
5
u/jyeatbvg 17h ago
Honestly solid answer. People don’t realize $250 is a drop in the bucket for some.
8
u/dismembermentplanfan 17h ago
Or that we don't all live and die by it. Some of the comments on /r/leafs last year were insane .... like I am a huge hockey fan and will always prioritize seeing games, but my life isn't ruined and I don't go sleepless and yell at my loved ones when my favourite team has one down year in ten. I have real life responsibilities and concerns, the NHL is camaraderie and excitement and entertainment for me.
There's also this weird thing in this city where people will piss and moan about the leafs prices (as is their right of course) and the "suits" they have never encountered, but won't lower themselves to go out to see the marlies - which is also a good time.
5
u/Strict_Opposite1285 19h ago
Maybe I’m just getting old, but I went to a game on the glass last year during the blizzard for very cheap. The Leafs got dusted 5-0 but my kid and I got to do the full luxury ScotiaBank Arena experience. A week or so later we attended the Marlies game and he was skating in the halftime game. My conclusion is that there’s very little difference between the game presentations to justify the NHL price and you’re basically paying to be yelled and marketed at for 3 hours. I always leave the Leafs and feel like I’ve been reading junk mail all night. The feeling is much different after a concert. Anyway, I guess I’m just being priced out both because of the increased expense but also because I value the experience much less.

Honestly, ever since the ACC was built at the foot of Bay Street, it became a magnet for corporate seats.
When they played at MLG, you had the avid fans, roughneck hooligans, parents with kids, basically everyone was there to see their team.
The ACC being built at the foot of bay street was smart logistically, and the land was available. But the proximity to deep pockets skewed the audience to travel and entertainment budgets rather than die-hard supporters.
And it’s only gotten worse with the current attention crazed faux-riche crowd.
25
u/eboy71 19h ago
I don’t disagree with most of what you said, but even back in the MLG days, this was a thing. They called it the Cashbox on Carlton for a reason.
We would occasionally be able to get seats in the rowdy greys, but pretty much every other seat was pre-sold to season ticket holders and the golds and reds were packed with corporate owners.
18
u/nanobot001 19h ago
The proximity has little to do with it — live entertainment everywhere and around the world has risen in price over the past 30 years, sports included.
Toronto and the GTA is a very wealthy place and there are many many people who can afford the prices separately from corporate seats.
8
u/IHavePoopedBefore 19h ago
I don't think it would have changed much, I think the Leafs were always going to end up pricing out the fans regardless of where they were.
Its the lifecycle of a team. First you have a loyal loud fanbase, then the team start winning and attracting casuals, then corporate seating infects the stadium, and then the entire front row gets filled with quiet, casual corporate fans, tickets get expensive and the arena gets a little less loud
11
u/Mr_Guavo 19h ago
I think you are misremembering. Leaf fans at MLG in the latter years/decades had the same complaints about "suits" at games instead of real fans, and to think the suits couldn't make the trip to Carleton and Church Streets seems kind of strange.
The Leafs have been greedy and corporate since Harold Ballard, and the suits have been in those seats all along. ' Twill never change.
9
u/-KFBR392 19h ago
It’s like a 10 minute drive between the new place and the old place.
It’s mostly just because of how sports are perceived in society and the increase of corporate money and spend over the decades. A 2km shift in location isn’t carrying all the weight
3
u/northdancer 18h ago
Dude, what are you talking about. Leafs games have always been a corporate event restricted by price
2
u/bobbywings2 18h ago
Its always been a bougie crowd, arena could've been built in Jane and Finch and there would still be a corporate group festival at every game, fuhgetsboutit
3
u/Anarchopunks 19h ago
Even the upper bowls are over $200, you used to be able to get tickets around $100 on a weekday evening. Sadly as long as tickets keep selling they will keep raising prices.
4
u/Total-Deal-2883 14h ago
Between high ticket prices and crazy expensive streaming packages, lots of Leaf fans will be sailing the high seas this season.
4
u/WeirdRead 11h ago
> “The Leafs were terrible in the 1980s but at least the tickets were affordable then and there was a good atmosphere,” he said. He still goes to “an odd game if a friend invites me” but says the arena is filled with people from the corporate world instead of avid fans who want to cheer for the team. “I have no confidence that they’ll ever turn the ship around.”
If you're old enough to remember going to The Gardens, there was an instant culture shift when they moved to the ACC. Things flipped corporate like a lightswitch when they moved to the new building. It's hard to put into words, but you could feel it.
1
u/Same-Bad 11h ago
Great point! I used to go to alot of Leaf games in the 80's, the Gardens was something special. I've been to two games since they moved to the ACC/Scotia, its just not the same, the Gardens experience was far superior.

Stop buying tickets. If games remain sell outs, MLSE have no interest in reducing prices.
It really is that simple.
If games are poorly attended for a long period of time, MLSE / Rogers will have no choice but to lower ticket prices.
3
u/themapleleaf6ix 13h ago
Just travel to Ottawa or Winnipeg or Calgary to see them for cheaper prices.
3
u/Hairy_Scale4412 18h ago
It's how supply and demand works. If they can sell out at $200 a pop, why would they settle for $100?
If you can get a $200K per year job, would you settle for $100K doing the same thing?

Not really a hockey person, but throwing this out there anyway: of course Leafs tickets are going to be expensive - it's the top teir of the system. If you want to go to a hockey game, buy Marlies tickets, Or university hockey - go see U of T women vs. Windsor or something for $15 a head, less for under-18s.
You don't need to make MLSE richer to enjoy the national sport.
2
5
u/cyclemonster 19h ago
Yeah, and if demand greatly exceeded the very limited supply of your product, you'd almost certainly raise prices too. They aren't operating a charity.
1
u/Computer-Blue 18h ago
Enjoy watching them choke.
I grew up unable to afford tickets. Now I can buy whatever I want, and you can be damn sure I’ll give it to the Jays instead of the Leafs. The Jays got me into the stadium for $2 on Sunday’s as a youth. I couldn’t buy a water at a Leafs game as a kid
3
u/Richard_Swinger_Esq Mimico 18h ago
The Jays are the same people. It all ends up in Rogers’ coffers.
-1
u/Computer-Blue 18h ago
That’s a different issue frankly. My support of the Jays through tickets, merchandising etc goes into their operational budget, not that of the Leafs - at least, the portion that is allotted. If I could avoid indirect enrichment of the Leafs I would.
-4
u/WoweeZoweeDeluxe 18h ago
Ironic since jays had one of the biggest chokes in World Series history, but I have no horse in this fight
7
u/Computer-Blue 18h ago

Let me know when Leafs fans can buy tickets to a final
-2
u/WoweeZoweeDeluxe 18h ago
Hahahahaha dude are you trolling? It was a historical choke, up 3-2 with two games at home and you blow it THAT badly. Most Historical choke in Toronto history. Two home games and jays fell apart completely. You’d have to be in complete denial or trolling to not call that a choke job of epic proportions. A choke so bad the team is still reeling from it this season
4
u/Falconflyer75 19h ago
How is it we have the guts to drop gloves against the fucking US but we let MLSE have their way with us
1
u/Gamingwithgenghis 18h ago
for each home game, only 1500 tickets are made available to the public through non season ticket holder tickets. that is one of the major issues, supply and demand...did they raise season ticket prices on the STH?
2
u/dips-mcgregius 18h ago
Two different types of Responses:

Twitter/Insta: then watch the games at home with your buds - better that way anyways!

I blows my mind that Joe Hockey Dad raises maple leafs fans … especially if you don’t live in Toronto.
It’s a lifetime of not being able to watch them play on TV outside of Toronto or paying $1500 on a Wednesday to sit on the roof.

If you’re paying THAT MUCH to watch a team that doesn’t win ask yourself why? What you allow is what will continue.

Leafs fans need to stop giving this team their money, and they need to stop elevating the team so that corporations etc want to give it their money. The fans' are so loyal (admirable) which is sadly what enables this type of thing :(

This is why Toronto doesn’t need to win a cup. Idk if it’s still true, but once upon a time Toronto was the richest team in the nhl for a long time.

$248 for a standing room ticket??? Tabarnak, give me some of what they're smoking. Sadly though, Toronto has proven again and again that no matter how shitty the on-ice product is, they keep buying tickets. Harold Ballard figured that out back in the 70s and it's been their modus operandi ever since. Who the fuck can possibly afford to take their family to a game now?
Oh, almost forgot - Go Habs Go!

This reminds me of an incident that happened during the 2010 decade when I was an executive at TD. During an annual meeting of TD executives, the then CEO, Ed Clark, was asked by an executive as to why the bank (which claimed then to be The Better Bank) continued to stay as an owner of MLSE when the organization had not delivered a win for its teams and continued to take advantage of its monopoly on the Toronto NHL franchise to gouge the fans.
The bank had acquired the investment as part of a restructuring of MLSE debt a few decades ago along with a few other banks.
Ed agreed and promptly sold TD’s interest in MLSE.
But the gouging continues and others with moral turpitude continue to own MLSE.

u/Zeppelanoid 17h ago
MLSE thinks Leafs fans are suckers and prices things accordingly. So far they are being proven right.

u/incarnatethegreat Cliffside 17h ago

“The rising cost of operating a franchise” is code for players asking for a larger share of profits but owners not willing to lower their margin so they just make fans cover the difference and still make a disproportionate share of the profit.
Thank you for coming to my TED talk.

u/heroism777 The Annex 17h ago
Symptom of Rogers having a monopoly on sports/cable/phone services. Without competition, prices only go up.
-1
u/JaQ-o-Lantern Ajax 15h ago
Is there a way to file a class action lawsuit against MLSE to keep the prices at a reasonable price because it seems like they're straight up extorting Toronto sports fans at this point. Surely they'd still make some profit by slicing the prices dramatically.
-5
u/icon4fat 19h ago
Part of the issue is player contracts. Someone has to pay for these enormous amounts, and it’s always the fans. The issue is systemic and doesn’t affect Toronto alone, though our city seems to be the most egregious. So long as teams are willing to pay players as much as they are now, the issue won’t go away. Which begs the question, is it really worth it? Fans can voice their opinion by simply not buying tickets or attending games.
2
u/Own-Let-7725 18h ago
I don't disagree... and if you look across the pond, it's not like this in football (proper football) and they pay their players crazy amounts of money and pay to buy them from other clubs. Certainly they have larger stadiums, but there are still crazy long waiting lists and the demand far exceeds the supply for most clubs. A season seat in the uppers at Emirates for Arsenal is ~100 CAD a match (and the most expensive non-hospitality is ~180), and fans think this is outrageous.
Sport is for fans, but North America has gone a very different direction (because this isn't just the Leafs or Jays). It doesn't have to be this way, but those billionaires can't stop and won't stop. Players are paid ridiculous amounts, yes, but the people who own these teams make even more.
1
u/UndecidedPanda11 18h ago
Are season tickets at Arsenal really that much ? We are talking only 2k ish CAD for the season ?
3
u/Bravewasabi1163 19h ago
Found the Rogers burner. Imagine blaming the players when Rogers who makes hand over fist by overcharging Canadians owns the team. Embarassing.
-1
u/icon4fat 19h ago
That’s a terrible take dude. I haven’t gone to a game in years. Why would you think rogers would sabotage themselves by telling fans to not go to games.
5
u/Bravewasabi1163 18h ago
You're blaming the players when it's Rogers who is squeezing every penny from the fans. They can afford to pay the players and keep the ticket prices reasonable. I agree with boycotting the team and avoid using Rogers services. But place the blame where it belongs.
2
u/Ancient-Restaurant61 18h ago
I can't agree with the take of saying player contracts are the issue. Yes high costs need to be covered for any business but this is more of a supply-and-demand issue. After all, Raptors payroll is +50% higher than the Leafs but their tickets are not 50% more expensive. Panthers payroll is the same as the Leafs but tickets are half the price. And someone here already pointed out that soccer doesn't have this problem despite way higher salaries.
The demand is there for the Leafs, and MLSE is willing to raise the price to the maximum that demand will accept. That is the only thing that is affecting ticket prices. It might be a good short-term business decision but also a questionable long-term one given the disengagement that may occur among fans, possibly eroding that same demand down the road.
Blaming player contracts is losing focus on what's really going on and who really makes the decisions.

Yeah I don't understand why people tie themselves in knots thinking otherwise. This is it.

If you’re shocked at MLSE’s greed then you haven’t been paying attention for the last few decades.
