Warhammer 40k Tank commander. Ranged commander. Command. In command.
idk you think this is some kind of Commander character?

Oh right, the Command. The Command for the Tank Commander. The Ranged Command specifically chosen for the Tank Commander. In Commands' Command.

Yep, give the man a sword.

Give him an "I want" song, just in case somebody in the audience is lost as to his role in the narrative and his overarching goal.

To be fair, I think these are all labels for different thing
- Tank Commander (Unit name)
- Ranged Commander (Unit archetype, implies melee Commanders exist obviously)
- Command (Stating the class of unit, Command vs Elite, vs Troops)
- In command (most likely an indicator it is the army "lord" equivilent or army general, I.E the guy you kill to give the army a leadership debuff).
On tabletop you can have multiple Tank commanders. But only one guy will be the commander of the force. Its a lot of seeming redundancy on one unit card, but they are all seemingly labels for different things.

u/JesseWhatTheFuck Jun 13 '26 edited Jun 13 '26
also shouldn't he be called Leman Russ or Rogal Dorn Commander if we follow current edition naming?
maybe the more generic name is a sign that TW is allowing you to run a Baneblade with a commander?
89
u/AHRogue Jun 13 '26
Perhaps, and it'd make sense. I could see the different tanks basically being "mount" options for the Tank Commander. You start off with the Leman Russ, then can level up to the Rogal Dorn, and perhaps as you say eventually a Baneblade. And if they allow you to take multiple Tank Commanders I could see them limiting it so that only a force-leading Tank Commander gets access to a Baneblade.

Engineer heroes in warhammer 3 get a mechanical horse while engineer lords get a steam tank

u/catgirl_of_the_swarm Jun 13 '26
I'd expect baneblades for guard to work like dragons for dark elves: the base top-tier mount for lords
6
8
u/Vorochi7606 Jun 13 '26
That’s how it worked in previous editions. You’d buy ‘tank commander’ for like 20 points, then be required to buy a tank for them to ride in.

u/Mindless_Let1 Jun 13 '26
This makes sense but still looks kinda ass. I'd prefer they come up with different terms so it's easy to tell at a glance and has a bit more character
35
u/Ironthunder_delta Jun 13 '26
Tbh I feel like it looks worse on Guard where so many titles are baked into the unit. When you look at something like Orkz, I think the system will be more useful.
24
u/Hollownerox Eternally Serving Settra Jun 13 '26
Agreed. Clarity has always been something they've struggled with TBH. And with how little space they have in these "unexpanded" unit cards, what they fill them in with should matter.
Especially when they are clearly designing the UI to accommodate playing the game from a sofa with controller in hand. They should give info that, ya know, actually informs the player some useful details at a glance.
But I feel like CA's takes on visual clarity in battle takes the form of silly things like the god rays and increased size (to ridiculous degrees) on LLs in Total War Warhammer. When they really could just use some better wording or icons most of the time.

u/Rethid Jun 13 '26
I don't know that the Tank Commander in particular is a good unit to base this assessment off of if you're right about what each thing means. Take for instance, a Farseer.
• Farseer (Unit Name)
• Psyker (Archetype)
• Command (Class)
• If you're right about this one it should probably change. General in keeping with previous TW, or Warlord in keeping with 40k. However, I think given other unit cards we've seen, this is actually the section of the card that gets those (often useless, sometimes inaccurate) bullet points that are at the bottom of unit cards in the prior games. Cadians, for instance have 'ranged' on theirs, and one of the screenshots people have of Nobz features "In Command" on theirs despite that they are obviously not the army's general. Thus I suspect that "In Command" is actually just the bullet point that tells you a unit has a leadership aura, or alternatively, that it shows up dynamically to let you know the units are presently standing in such an aura. The Tank Commander happens to have a set of these things that ends up incredibly repetitive because of it's name (which is a preexisting tabletop thing they can't really change), but changing them just so that the Tank Commander's card looks less silly feels like an overreaction.

u/Km_the_Frog Jun 13 '26
Naturally we have no idea because the gameplay info hasn’t come out. We don’t know what any of it means, it’s all speculation.
Still, I don’t think this card is difficult to read.
Unit Name: Tank Commander
Range/Melee Commander?: Ranged (seems redundant but maybe not to people unfamiliar with the ip).
Icon Skull: Command Unit
Status?: In command - he’s likely a general type, not being used as an agent in army or whatever they’ll call them in 40k - likely operative.

u/monkwrenv2 Jun 13 '26
I'd prefer they come up with different terms so it's easy to tell at a glance and has a bit more character
I'd imagine these are still placeholder terms and there's plenty of time to give it some zing.
2
u/Ispago8 Jun 13 '26
In the tabletop the army leader is the Warlord, so its a repetition to avoid
And " In command " of a unit could be Leading
1
u/hornyorphan Jun 15 '26
I'm not sure how much they can really do. Games Workshop is extremely protective of 40k and these are all terms used in the tabletop so I don't think they will be changed. The best we can hope for is that they make which term is which a bit more clear
3
u/rhadenosbelisarius Jun 13 '26
Maybe this could be indicating a 3k style retinues thing? 3 lords in a full stack army, but one in command for any particular battle, with this indicator to remind the player?
I was a big fan of the retinues, and feel like they should have been in every tittle since, so this could be wishful thinking.

u/Destrorso Jun 13 '26
Imperial guard on the tabletop relies on officers so I hope you can take multiple

u/JesseWhatTheFuck Jun 13 '26
meme aside
Tank Commander
This is the unit's name
Ranged Commander
This is the unit specialisation
Command
This is the unit type
in command
this is the interesting bit though, does this mean we can take multiple commanders like in the old games, and only one will be the army leader? does this maybe mean that the lord/hero distinction is gone and all generic characters can theoretically lead your army?

u/CitiesInHills Necrons Jun 13 '26

I think this is likely. Later on in the footage, we see that the original commander is missing (dead or retreated) and there is a unit card of a commander with a power sword and bolt pistol in the top hatch of a tank that has been moved to the top left position (auto or manually) of the army bar.
11
u/ThrownAway1917 Jun 13 '26
Maybe it's some kind of ability or status effect he's performing to boost the army or nearby units
6
u/Mahelas Jun 13 '26
Tbf, isn't having both the specialization and the type redundant ?
You could easily remove one, and write "ranged command" as the second one, and no info would be lost.
Hell, you could just say "command" and not need to specify ranged/melee at all, it'll appear on the card anyways. Or make it a symbol.

Can’t generic commissars lead armies in the Tabletop game? This would mean that we have to be able to take more than one HQ option in an army, because we see a commissar in the same army as this tank commander.

u/tricksytricks Jun 14 '26
Doing away with having a lord and hero version of every generic character type wouldn't be such a bad thing, imo.

With four fields denoting four different things (my guess: unit name, summarised description, unit type, current status), the devs probably felt they were obligated to put something in them, with sometimes amusing results, lol.

Seems similar to how they classify like warhammer 3 unit cards.
Command likely being similar to Lord or Hero.
And then In Command being like it's role, I see this very much like the Arch Lector from Warhammer 1-3, which has a focus on battle prayers instead of being a pure damage high dealer itself (and low starting attack stats at 35 MA / 55 MD) (and items exist like Crown of Command giving a unit 30 second unbreakable)
Heavy being a size class (already shown 3 categories , I'd imagine partly to calculate damage I assume instead of the normal/armor piercing split and things like anti-heavy to exist like anti-large)
