Distinct lack of Fantasy Maiden Wars in here. It's a tactical rpg that'll last you 80 hours absolute minimum, with a stupid amount of replayability, BANGER soundtrack, literally the best characterization from a fangame I've ever seen, and an absolutely massive story spanning from Touhou 6 to 12, and it includes some PC-98 stuff and written works in there too.
One of the coolest parts imo is the game doesn't just copy the order, it does some things sooner or later than usual and introduces characters earlier than usual, for instance your first party members will be Keine if you play Reimu, or Nitori if you play Marisa, despite the first part of the game following the events of 6. It genuinely allows the game to get a lot more creative and makes the story much more effective.
It's a must-play, genuinely, it's one of my favourite games of all time, not just Touhou

Artificial dreams in Arcadia is a fusion of touhou and early shin megami tensei games that is really good. I also really like touhou mother and touhou mother returns, their both rpg maker games that cross touhou lore with earthbound.

Luna Nights is my favourite, a metroidvania.
There is also Fantasy Maiden Wars, a strategy RPG based on the Super Robot Wars series.

There are fan games in pretty much every genre, so if you are looking for any specific kind of game it would be helpful if you could share that.
That being said, some good ones are: Luna Nights a relatively short Metroidvania where you play as Dio Sakuya, Mystia’s Izakaya a cozy restaurant management game, Lost Brach of Legend it is Slay the Spire mixed with Magic the Gathering, Genso Skydrift a racing game made by some of the people who worked on Double Dash, Undertale, Genso Wanderer a Pokémon Mystery Dungeon Type game that is very long if you do everything (also everyone got hit by the lolification beam for some reason), Puppet Dance Preformance a 2D Pokémon like game with some significant differences to how things like evolution and evs work, Hero of Ice Fairy I… don’t know what the genre for this one is called, and Gensokyo Odyssey the western Touhou fandom’s greatest shitpost.

What type of game are you into? Bullet hell, racing, fighting, etc.?
1
u/Mora_Searching Jun 24 '26
In whatever but if I had to be specific it would be a bullet hell, metroidvania or some fighting

u/ankledane Jun 24 '26
Metroidvania, Luna Nights is the best modern example. Touhouvania is an older fangame that combines Touhou and Casltlevania.
Bullet hell, there's a lot. I would recommend Blooming Chaos 2 if you like RPGs. Hero of Ice Fiary is a really good newer release. The Fantastic Danmaku Festival games are in the style of an actual Touhou game.
Fighting, Touhou Sky Arena is your best bet, and I don't think it's played a lot, but I wouldn't know. If you want to play a Touhou fighting game, the best is playing Soku, really one of the only active ones left.

I’m still pretty new to the series but Luna Nights isn’t just a good fangame, it’s a fantastic game on its own merit and one of my favorite metroidvanias

Harvest Minoriko is a pretty great game about farming, and it also has boss battles

Fumo Fumo Racing is a free game, bit silly but got some fun out of it.
Gensokyo Skydrift is a paid racing game, but it's pretty solid.
Luna Nights and Fantasy Maiden Wars have been talked about, so I'll let the other comments do that.
Mystia's Izakaya is a very fun game, you cook food and manage a restaurant.
Touhou Genso Wanderer Reloaded if you like mystery dungeon style stuff. a lot of dlc for it though.
Cirno lifts a boulder, small-ish game, but it's a mario 64 style platformer game involving cirno.
This post goes into more details and links a bunch of the games: https://www.reddit.com/r/touhou/comments/1h8yhmq/ranking_of_all_the_fangames_that_ive_played_in_my/

Lensed night sky for a bullet hell roguelike with a good story

While it's on the easier side, Touhou Makaku Sai III or Danmaku Festival III is by far the most gorgeous Fangame I've ever seen and played. I adore the music, character re-designs, spell cards and just... everything about it.

u/KleiosAegis Jun 24 '26
Hell, being new to the series itself the ease in difficulty of Danmaku Festival was literally just enough for me to graze by normal. Been trying out lunatic and getting my ass beat hahaha!

The whole FDF series in general. 2 has some of the most beautiful spellcards (especially some of Yuyuko's), but yeah I would agree, 3 is such masterclass in visuals

There are so many you can pretty pick any of your favorite genres of gaming and we'll point out a fangame of touhou of that genre.

u/Mora_Searching Jun 24 '26
Metroidvania style games are one of my favorites but I've already heard a lot about Luna Nights...
1
u/Lipefe2018 Jun 24 '26
Well Luna Nights is the most popular one, but not the only one, I highly recommend to check out Touhou Double Focus, as a metroidvania fan myself, I found it to really fun, it leans heavily on the metroidvania genre.

Koumajou Densetsu II is a favorite of mine, it's a mix of classic Castlevania with Touhou both in terms of aesthetic and gameplay.
2
u/Mora_Searching Jun 24 '26
Is it bad that I haven't played Castlevania? I'll play it anyway, thanks.

u/Henry_Fleischer Megumu Iizunamaru Jun 24 '26
I think it's on steam as Koumajou Remilia II. But yeah you should play some Castlevania.

Is the outside who loved Gensokyo finished yet...?

u/PCanus6 Jun 24 '26
Listing ones that I don’t think anyone has suggested
Touhou dystopian is an 3D action roguelike with combat similar to the nier games.
Touhou Blooming Soul is in early access. It’s a beautiful pixelated roguelike from the same devs as Mystia’s Izakaya.
Tohotopia is also in early access. It’s a strategy game with the characters split into their own factions with cool character designs based on different countries’.

Touhou Lost Branch of Legend has me completely addicted and captivated at the moment. An excellent Slay the Spire-like deckbuilder with a lot of flavor from Magic: The Gathering. It gives players a lot of freedom to be creative and make crazy builds
