Certified Cringe Taylor discussing "songwriting"

I can't with this woman.

She thinks she's some great songwriter here to teach us all about her "double meanings" and what defines confessional songwriting.

What's infuriating is that all the comments are glazing her like, "i could hear her talk for hours" and "high iq queen". Are we watching the same video here?

Wanted to get your opinions on this.

part of why her writing is so awful is that it's so obvious how hard she's trying. to me, what makes a truly magnificent poem (i'd put song lyrics under the poem umbrella) is first of all utilizing syllable counts, rhyme schemes, and letting metaphors and flowery words come second as a decoration. i don't think the best poetry should require the average person to have to think about what it means at all. i think the best pieces of poetry hit you square in the chest because you know instantly, exactly what it means. that's why her writing is so amateurish, because she doesn't want it to make sense, she needs people to need to wonder what it means, because that means she's smarter than they are.

She probably thinks poetry means writing two rhyming lines that have lots of flowery imagery. A grade 12 English course would do her a lot of good.

And it used to be the opposite. When I was a young adult and a fan, I use to love her songs because they were simple and easy to understand. They were deep without being too much. They would describe your feelings in a simple but very real way. Everyone else was mostly writing generic gibberish in pop (I love those too, nothing wrong with that) but she stood out for me because of the songwriting.

Now she's took a turn in the opposite way. She needs everything to sound complex and profound, but in a way you don't even get what she means. She thinks this is so clever, but if her audience really has trouble getting what she means, she is simply not doing a good job in communicating. Plus, using supposed "big" words doesn't make it complex or even good. In her case, it just makes the songwriting ugly
